Everything Stolen, I Left to Become CEO
To Darcy's surprise and relief, Gwen wasn't upset at all, attributing her failure to win Bram over to her own lack of skill. At least they weren't going to feud over a man. Gwen hugged Darcy's arm, grinning. "Darcy, don't worry. I believe in fair play when it comes to pursuing someone. No catty competition. Besides, I've got plenty of energy and tricks up my sleeve. I'm not giving up on Bram yet!" Darcy could only smile. "I wish you the best of luck!" Suddenly, Gwen winked at her. "So, Darcy... what do you think of my cousin?" "Oh, right," Darcy remembered. "I have your cousin's scarf. I brought it today. Could you return it to him for me?" Gwen's eyes lit up. Wow, Hugo's moving fast! Already at the scarf-giving stage! She shook her head vigorously. "We live pretty far apart. It's inconvenient. Just keep it for now. You can give it back to him yourself when you have time." Score! Gwen mentally patted herself on the back. So clever! Next month's allowance might just double! Back at the Sterling residence, Hugo, working in his study, sneezed three times in a row. His mother hurried upstairs. "Are you catching a cold? I'll have the housekeeper make some ginger tea." Hugo waved her off. "It's fine. I'll just drink more water." On the way down the mountain, all three were exhausted. They found a casual diner nearby, ate, and then headed home. Darcy was the first back. After a shower, she had just settled into bed when her phone rang. It was Jethro. "Hello, boss?" "Sorry to bother you during the weekend." "No problem. What's up?""Was Cindy with you today?" Darcy sat up. "Yes, we went hiking, but we parted ways after dinner." She checked the time. "She should be on her way home by now." Jethro sounded relieved. "How was her mood?" "She was a bit angry at first, but she calmed down. I think Cindy is just really against the idea of a blind date." Jethro chuckled softly, "I figured as much. It wasn't even supposed to be a setup today. She jumped to conclusions. Thank you for being with her. I'm glad she had you to talk to." "It's nothing. Cindy's my friend." "Mm. Happy weekend." Darcy was taken aback for a second, then smiled, "Happy weekend." ... On Monday, Darcy arrived at the office early.Zephyr was already waiting in the lobby. "Mr. Knight," she greeted him. "Sorry for the wait." He gave a polite, gentle smile. "Not at all. I'm early." They took the elevator up, and Darcy introduced Zephyr to the various departments. Just then, Cindy walked in. She raised an eyebrow. "New hire? Is he hot?" "Very," Darcy confirmed. "Where? Let me see!" Cindy said, excited. "He's in the break room, coming right—" As she spoke, a tall figure emerged from the break room. Cindy turned, and her smile froze. Zephyr also paused, clearly recognizing her. Unaware of the undercurrents, Darcy smiled and made the introductions. "This is our new architect, Zephyr Knight. And this is our client manager, Cindy Blackwood."Zephyr extended his hand. "Nice to meet you." Cindy silently shook it, her grip lasting only a second before she pulled away and walked straight to her office. Zephyr watched her go, his lips pressing into a tight line. At noon, to welcome Zephyr, Darcy organized a group lunch, having the admin book a restaurant. After notifying the mid-level managers, she went to invite Cindy. "Lunch to welcome Zephyr. You're coming, right?" To her surprise, Cindy refused. "I have something to do. I'll pass." "What do you have to do? All the client renewals are settled." Cindy hesitated, falling silent for a long moment. Finally, it clicked for Darcy. She raised an eyebrow. "Do you have some issue with Zephyr?"It wasn't strange that Cindy knew Zephyr, since he was Jethro's friend. But avoiding him? The only explanation was some past conflict. Cindy shook her head. "No. Fine, I'll go." When they arrived at the private room, everyone else was already seated, leaving only two empty spots. One was obviously the head seat for Darcy. The other was to Zephyr's right. Cindy took a deep breath and sat in the latter seat with a blank expression. As she sat down, his long arm accidentally brushed against hers. "Sorry," Zephyr said, looking at her apologetically. Cindy replied flatly, "It's fine." Soon, the food arrived. As everyone ate and chatted, many were curious about Zephyr. "Mr. Knight, becoming an architect at your age is impressive! Where did you study?"
