The Second Love
Honestly, I didn't want to answer Dominic Hartnell's call, but I had no choice. He probably called because of what happened earlier in the day. If I didn't answer, he might think that his mom and I were having another conflict. Well, I had no choice but to answer! "Hello, honey, why are you calling again? Aren't you busy today?" I picked up the phone and deliberately spoke in a relaxed and cheerful tone. "Well, I've almost finished my work. Tomorrow, I'm going to the Polytechnic University to meet Lou." When I heard that he was going to meet Lou, I instinctively became serious. "Remember to talk to Lou properly. He actually looks up to you a lot." Dominic Hartnell responded, "Yeah, I know what to do. By the way, did you and Mom go shopping together after the prenatal check-up today?" I placed my left hand on my pounding heart and spoke rapidly, like a machine gun, "Yes, exactly. We were on our way to the mall when you called." "You have no idea how many clothes, toys, bottles, and pacifiers Mom bought. The trunk of the car is overflowing." After I finished speaking, Dominic Hartnell asked, "So, did you have a great time shopping?" I felt a little guilty, but because I had promised Dominic Hartnell's mom, I couldn't say anything. I could only exaggerate and laugh, "Haha, of course we had a great time." "It was my first time going shopping alone with Mom. We got along really well. I now realize that Mom is actually someone who appears cold but has a warm heart, like a knife with a soft side." "The more time we spend together, the more I realize how amazing she is. She takes care of me so well. You don't have to worry." That was the truth. You can only truly know someone's nature after spending time with them. Perhaps I seemed overly happy today, and Dominic Hartnell seemed to believe my words. He didn't question me further and just casually chatted with me. However, I had been on edge all day, and we had been shopping for several hours. I was really tired now. In the time it took to exchange a few words with him, I had already yawned twice in a row. I said weakly, "Honey, I'm exhausted. Let's talk tomorrow. Remember to call me after you meet Lou." "I want to go to sleep." Dominic Hartnell's tone was filled with indulgence and tenderness as he sighed, "Alright, go to sleep quickly. But when you wake up, remember to eat something. Don't starve yourself and the babies.""Wife, I miss you. Remember to miss me too." Hearing this, I smiled sweetly. This guy is getting better and better at sweet-talking. Look at his skills, effortlessly tugging at my heartstrings. "Mhmm, I miss you too. I'll go to sleep now. Oh, and remember to eat risotto on time." "Okay, sleep well. I'll hang up now." Through the phone, I blew Dominic Hartnell a big kiss before ending the call. Phew... I'm really exhausted. But never mind, I'll just sleep first. I placed my phone on the bedside table and closed my eyes. In just a few minutes, I fell asleep. When I woke up, it was already pitch black outside. Luckily, I had left a small bedside lamp on, otherwise the room would have been completely dark and I wouldn't be able to see my hand in front of my face.I got out of bed, washed my face in the bathroom, changed my clothes, and then left the bedroom to go downstairs. As soon as I reached the ground floor, the maid greeted me. "Madam, you must be hungry now. What would you like to eat? I'll ask the kitchen to prepare it." I rubbed my stomach, feeling a bit hungry since I hadn't eaten much during the day. "Well... just make something simple. By the way, where's my mother-in-law? Has she woken up? Did she eat risotto?" It was already past eight o'clock, so if Dominic Hartnell's mother hadn't eaten yet, we could eat together. However, the maid told me that she had already eaten risotto. So I went to the dining hall by myself. I sat there and read some magazines for a while, and soon enough, a steaming plate of risotto was brought to the table. It looked really appetizing and made me hungry. But I only ate until I was about 70-80% full. I didn't dare to eat too much now, afraid that it wouldn't be good for giving birth. After finishing the risotto, I lazily curled up on the sofa in the living room and turned on the TV. As I switched channels with the remote control, I saw Chen Ma walking over from the kitchen with a porcelain bowl in her hands. Chen Ma came back from abroad with Dominic Hartnell's mother. Dominic Hartnell had told me that she was the one who took care of him the most when he was a child. Although there was still some distance, I could already smell a distinct bitter taste. I immediately realized that it was Dominic Hartnell's mother's medicine. "Aunt Chen, is this for Mom? Let me take it up."I stood up and stood in front of Aunt Chen. She held the tray and moved aside, smiling gently, "No need, young lady. Just watch TV. It's not convenient for you with your big belly. I'll take it to the lady." I didn't argue with Aunt Chen. If I couldn't deliver the medicine, then I would just go with her. It shouldn't be inconvenient. I didn't feel at ease without seeing his mother with my own eyes. Aunt Chen didn't say anything when she saw that I wanted to go with her, she just reminded me to walk slowly. When we arrived at the door of Dominic Hartnell's mother's bedroom, I knocked on the door and heard a response before pushing the door open and walking in. "Mom," I called out first. Following closely, Aunt Chen also spoke, "Madam, the medicine has been left to cool for a while. You can drink it now." Dominic Hartnell's mother happily took the medicine bowl and drank it. After that, Aunt Chen left. Once the door was closed, I took a few steps closer to the bed and discreetly observed her expression. I asked, "Mom, are you feeling okay?" "Mm, I'm fine. You shouldn't touch this medicine. Don't follow along in the future." Dr. Gu had mentioned that it's not good for pregnant women, and I remembered. "I know, I just wanted to see you. As long as you're fine, then it's okay. Rest early, I'll leave." After saying that, I prepared to leave, but she called me back. She didn't say much else, just reminded me again not to let Dominic Hartnell know. I felt a tinge of sadness, but I could only comply obediently. After exiting Dominic Hartnell's mother's bedroom, I lacked the desire to head to the living room and watch TV. Instead, I turned on my heels and made my way back to the bedroom that Dominic Hartnell and I shared. Upon reentering the room, I reclined on the bed, feeling a tad bored. Just as I was lost in my thoughts, my phone, resting on the bedside table, emitted a sudden beep.
