The Second Love

Chapter 310 There's Always Bitterness Before Sweetness

Time passed quietly and steadily, until we finally reached four-thirty, the best time for Shannon and me. I leaned my head on Dominic Hartnell's shoulder, feeling a bit exhausted, and let out a soft sigh. Dominic Hartnell didn't go to the office today; he stayed at home with me. "Well, it seems like this is the best we can do," I said. Dominic Hartnell squeezed my hand and comforted me, "You've done everything you can. The rest is out of your control." "Don't worry anymore, and don't let it bother you," he added. A faint sense of melancholy lingered in my heart, but I nodded after hearing Dominic Hartnell's words. At this point, everything was already a fact. From now on, I could only strive to make every day with Dominic Hartnell the best it could be. Nicholas Scott, I hope he finds his own happiness too. After taking a deep breath, I pushed aside all the distracting thoughts in my mind and adjusted my mindset. "Honey, let's go out and buy a chocolate mousse cake later. I feel like having something sweet," I suggested. When I'm not feeling well, eating something sweet always cheers me up. Dominic Hartnell smiled and nodded. So, after having risotto for dinner, I eagerly dragged him out of the house. I was worried that the dessert shop might close soon. As we left, I intentionally didn't bring my phone with me. It was only when we returned home that I saw the WeChat message from Shannon. He sent a photo of Nicholas Scott and Gu Xingchen. Hmm, they looked like a textbook prince and princess, just perfect together. They were both wearing formal attire, and their appearance couldn't be more compatible. I genuinely hoped that they could be as loving as they appeared in the photo and grow old together. Behind the photo, Shannon also sent a message. "Wishing them happiness..." I stared at those three words for a while, feeling at a loss for words, until Dominic Hartnell came out of the kitchen with the cake, already sliced, and snapped me out of my daze. I didn't reply to Shannon's message; I just silently locked my phone and put it aside. My mood inevitably became a bit gloomy again. Coincidentally, Dominic Hartnell had already brought the cake to me. I took it eagerly and took a bite. The slightly bitter and tangy taste exploded in my mouth, instantly lifting my spirits. The bitter taste gradually faded away, replaced by a sweet flavor that enveloped my senses and gradually overcame the initial bitterness. All that remained in my mouth was a smooth and sweet aroma. Although I had eaten chocolate mousse cake many times before, none of them had ever touched me as deeply as this one. Nicholas Scott's future life should be like this cake, starting off perhaps not as satisfactory, but ultimately turning out sweet after the bitterness. Thinking about this, I couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief and fed a small piece of cake to Dominic Hartnell. "Have a bite, it's delicious. We can come here often in the future, they make really good cakes." Dominic Hartnell didn't have a sweet tooth and frowned, keeping his distance. But I didn't care and persistently brought the small fork closer to his mouth. "Try it, just one bite. This chocolate one isn't as sweet." Dominic Hartnell reluctantly gave in, indulging me with a mix of affection and helplessness. Satisfied that he had taken a bite, I stopped bothering him. It wasn't too late, so Dominic Hartnell and I went to bed early because he had to pick up his parents from the airport in the morning. We only received the call this morning, so it was a bit sudden. Fortunately, they weren't coming back today, so we wouldn't have an awkward encounter. The next day, Dominic Hartnell woke up early, prepared breakfast risotto, and said goodbye to me before leaving. We agreed that he would go pick up his parents first, take them back to the villa, and then come back to get me. This gave me some time to pack my belongings. Around 11:30, Dominic Hartnell finally returned to the apartment. We arrived at the villa just in time for lunch risotto. However, only Dominic Hartnell and I had lunch, as his parents were probably tired and adjusting to the time difference. I didn't get to meet them. It wasn't until the evening that I saw his parents at the dinner table. They seemed a bit tired, probably due to lack of rest. After finishing dinner, they only sat in the living room for a while before going upstairs. Later, Dominic Hartnell accompanied me to the screening room to watch a movie before we returned to our room. That's when he told me that he was planning to go to Jadeborough. One reason was because he had some urgent matters to attend to, which I understood very well. After all, he had already postponed them for quite some time to be with me. The other reason was that if he didn't go soon, Lou would be on summer vacation. My dad called earlier and said that the new house has started renovation. He asked us to come back and take a look if there are any changes we want to make. The workers can still make adjustments. After I told Dominic Hartnell about it, he decided to wait for Lou and clear up their misunderstanding. When he comes back, he will bring Lou along, and the three of us will go back to my parents' house together. I don't have any objections, and I actually hope everything goes smoothly. So, after spending another day at home with me, Dominic Hartnell set off for Jadeborough, while I stayed at the villa. On the same night that Dominic Hartnell left, Shannon called me and talked endlessly about Nicholas Scott's situation.I felt relatively calm this time, as everything has already been settled. As an observer, I can only offer my blessings and not interfere any further. Shannon must have understood this too. After venting for a while, she didn't mention it again. She did mention that she wanted to come over and keep me company while Dominic Hartnell was away, but when she heard that I was at the villa and Dominic Hartnell's parents were there, she immediately dropped the idea. We chatted for a long time about various things, and before hanging up, Shannon told me to be careful and to call her if I ever get bullied, and she will come to pick me up. Listening to her words, which sounded like a concerned neighbor, I couldn't help but laugh. After sharing a laugh, we chatted for a while longer before ending the call. The following days were uneventful, except for a few calls from the publishing house regarding book signings. "My Wish to Stay with You" has been incredibly popular lately, and several editions have sold out. However, no matter what the publishing house said, I didn't budge, and in the end, they reluctantly gave up. After that, each day became peaceful, until it was time for my monthly check-up. I had initially intended to go by myself, but Dominic Hartnell's mother insisted on joining me. Therefore, after enjoying a breakfast of risotto, the two of us departed together. What was meant to be a routine check-up unexpectedly led me to stumble upon something.
