The Second Love
I sighed as I reluctantly left my cozy bed. I wasted another three minutes dawdling before finally mustering the courage to open the door. Honestly, I really wanted to pretend that I hadn't heard my mom calling me. My mom is the same way. Why couldn't she just let me hide for another ten or twenty minutes? Why did she have to call me so urgently? To my surprise, when I returned to the living room, I found that all the aunties were gone, and my mom was busy cleaning up the paper cups and melon seed shells on the table. "Mom, did they all leave?" My mom hurriedly threw the trash into the bin and glanced at me, "They're gone. Aren't you happy?" "You've always been like this. It's just chatting with people, but it's like someone is trying to force-feed you poison. Why do you make it so difficult?" I chuckled awkwardly, "That's just how I am, and you know it. By the way, why did they leave so suddenly? I thought we would chat for at least another half an hour." My mom handed me the full trash bag and said, "Take it outside... Your dad came back, so they left." I was taken aback and asked, "Where's Dad? Did he go back to his room? What was he doing outside for so long?" "He's in the kitchen. Your dad went out to buy groceries and fruits. You naughty girl, he even bought a hen specifically to make soup. You know who that soup is for, right? Make sure you apologize to your dad later." "Hurry up and take out the trash. It's leaking." As my mom spoke, I felt warmth in my heart and smiled. I obediently took the trash outside. When I came back, I went to the kitchen and saw both my dad and mom busy with their tasks. If I wanted to apologize, I had to show a good attitude. I thought about helping them, but as soon as I touched the leaves of the Chinese cabbage, my dad called me and sent me back to the living room. Feeling a bit frustrated, I sat down on the sofa. Did my dad really not want to talk to me? At that moment, my phone in my bag beeped twice, indicating a WeChat message from Shannon. It was quite a coincidence that she was also asking if I wanted to attend the wrap-up party at Nicholas Scott's place. But this time, it wasn't Nicholas Scott who invited her, but an invitation sent by Flash. I told Shannon about Nicholas Scott asking me and me rejecting him. But Shannon wasn't as easily convinced as Nicholas Scott. She kept pestering me, insisting that I agree to go with them. Besides the fact that I didn't want to go with Nicholas Scott because I was heavily pregnant and it would be inconvenient, I also wanted to avoid any suspicion, especially since Dominic Hartnell never liked Nicholas Scott. Last time they went out together, I still haven't figured out where they went. But personally, I was quite interested in this wrap-up party. I've never been to one before and I wanted to see what it's like. Now that I know Shannon and Grace Calhoun are also going, I started to reconsider. If I go, it's because of Flash's invitation, and it's not like I have any connection with Nicholas Scott. Plus, there will be a lot of people there, and Nicholas Scott, being the lead actor, probably won't have time to bother with me. So... why not go and have some free food and drinks? The more I thought about it, the more I felt like it was a good idea. And mainly, I couldn't resist my own desire to go. So, in the end, I happily agreed to Shannon and decided to go to the wrap-up party with her.Miss Shannon immediately became ecstatic and promised to pick me up in a private car and ensure my safety throughout the event. After finishing my friendly conversation with Shannon, I looked up and saw my mom walking out of the kitchen with a plate of green kiwis. "It's your dad who bought them. Eating them is good for you." Looking at the plate of kiwis in front of me, I felt both touched and amused. Where did my dad learn this spoiled and temperamental behavior? He wasn't like this before. Back when I was studying, if I made him unhappy, the mildest reaction would be a harsh scolding. No, my dad is a university professor, he wouldn't be so rude. It must be... gentle persuasion! If it was something serious, he would just make a dish of stir-fried pork with bamboo shoots. But now, he would give me a sour face while doing all sorts of things for my sake. It's really awkward. I ate a piece of kiwi, it was very sweet. After swallowing it, I looked at my mom and asked, "Mom, how can I apologize to dad so that he won't be angry with me anymore? He doesn't even want to talk to me, he just wants me to leave." My mom glared at me with a stern expression and said angrily, "If you weren't pregnant now, I would want to smack you! Do you not understand why your dad kicked you out of the kitchen? He cares about you!" "You really are a disobedient girl. You kept the fact that you were pregnant a secret from us for several months. Shouldn't your father be angry? He was worried that you would be taken advantage of by Xiao Han." "I don't want to talk to you anymore. Think about it yourself." After saying the last word, my mother stood up and went back to the kitchen. I sat dumbfounded on the sofa, with a thousand thoughts running through my mind. My father... he's a tough guy with a soft heart. No matter how harsh he is towards me or how angry he gets, every word he says and everything he does is ultimately for my own good. Just like what my mother said about me, I am really immature. "Lili, go downstairs and buy a bottle of vinegar. We ran out." My mother's call brought me back to reality. I was about to respond when I heard my father talking about my mother. "Why ask her to do it? It's troublesome for her to go up and down with a big belly. I'll go buy it." My mother complained, "Old man, she's only five months pregnant. It's no problem for her to walk a few steps." Without saying a word, my father came out of the kitchen and headed straight for the door.I immediately stood up from the sofa and followed him, saying, "Dad, I'll go with you." Afraid that he wouldn't agree, I continued, "Sitting for too long is uncomfortable. It's good to take a walk." After a moment of silence, my father nodded and after a few seconds, he said, "Put on your coat." "Okay!" I replied loudly, quickly went back to my room to get my coat, and then followed my father out the door. As we made our way, from leaving the house to stepping into the elevator and stepping out of it, neither of us uttered a word. However, my father always walked beside me, and upon entering or exiting the elevator, he would intentionally press the button and let me go ahead. Over these past few years, both of my parents have aged significantly. They both have a considerable number of strands of white hair. Particularly my father, who is five years older than my mother and being a man, displays more noticeable signs of aging. Suddenly, a pang of sadness washed over me. Without much thought, I reached out and grasped my father's arm. I could distinctly feel his body tense for a moment. I sniffled and whispered, "Dad, I apologize for causing you worry."
