The Second Love
“Dad...” Dad ignored me and returned to the bedroom with a grim expression, slamming the door hard. “Mom, what happened to Dad? Were the activities not fun? Or did he argue with someone?” Dad seemed to be swelling with rage, so I did not dare to ask too loudly. After a pause, Mom explained resignedly, “It's nothing. Your dad had a conflict with a man when he was playing chess. You know your dad. He takes chess very seriously and that man wasn't good at it. Can you go out and get some groceries for dinner? I'll talk to him later. It's no big deal.” Her words rendered me speechless. Chess? Just that? “Look at the time. Hurry up and get the groceries. Your dad will be even more upset if he's hungry.”Suppressing my urge to laugh, I nodded and returned to my bedroom to get my wallet. No wonder people said that the elderly behaved no differently from kids. The more I thought about it along the way, the more amused I was. Knowing that it was not a big deal, I no longer worried about it. Shortly afterward, I arrived at the supermarket near my house in a relaxed mood. Apart from the groceries, I bought Dad's favorite peanuts as well. When I reached home, I saw Mom and Dad sitting on the couch in the living room, and the TV was on. As expected of a long-time married couple, Mom really had a way with Dad. Carrying the groceries, I walked toward the kitchen and greeted them with a smile, “Mom, Dad, I'll cook tonight. You only need to wait for the dinner to be ready. By the way, Dad, I bought your favorite peanuts.” With that said, I took out the peanuts I bought from the bag and handed them over.Dad stretched out his hand to catch it, but he looked a little weird when he was looking at me. He seemed to have something to say. “Dad, do you have something to tell me?” Stunned for a few seconds, he eventually shook his head. “It's nothing. You go ahead with your business.” I looked at him suspiciously but was unable to read his expression. Confused, I shifted my gaze to Mom. Moments later, she stood up and dragged me to the kitchen. “Leave him alone. He's still mad.” Nevertheless, I felt they were acting weird as if they were hiding something from me. No matter how many times I asked, Mom would give me the same answers. Forget it. I don't think it's something serious. After dinner, Louis called and informed us that he would not come home that night and would stay at a friend's house.Seeing that it was still early, I forced Mom and Dad to go for a walk. When I was young, my parents loved to take Louis and me out for a walk after dinner. Later, Louis and I grew up, and the opportunities for that became lesser. Our parents took care of us while we grew up, but now that they were getting old, we could not stay by their side all the time. I walked in the middle, holding their hands in each of my hands. Thinking that they were already in the twilight of their lives, I suddenly felt scared. Both of them were getting old, and the time I could spend with them was getting lesser and lesser. All of a sudden, I thought of Grandpa and subconsciously tightened my grips on their hands. I regretted it once and I could not repeat the same mistake again. Fortunately, there were still opportunities. I vowed to go home often to accompany them, even if it was only for dinner.I chatted with them, holding their arms as we ambled along the trail. When we passed by a travel agency, I was attracted by the words in their advertisement. Life is short; enjoy every moment to the fullest. Grant your parents a chance to travel around the world before they are long in the tooth. At that moment, I thought it was a good idea to let them travel around. They had worked hard for half their lives. Now that they had finally retired, they should start enjoying their lives. The more I thought about it, the more I found it feasible. Thus, I dragged them into the travel agency. One of the staff greeted us enthusiastically as soon as we entered. “Mom, Dad, I'll treat you to a nice trip. Where do you want to go?” They froze on the spot and did not speak for a long time. The staff was quick in reading the situation. He took us to sit down at a small table, brought a stack of materials, and started introducing us to various tourist spots. Every destination sounded good to me, but in the end, my parents would be the ones to decide on where they liked to visit. As for Mom and Dad, despite being a little confused at first, they were finally interested in it after a while. While listening to the staff, they even looked through the information and compared them. “Mom, choose a place with Dad. I'm going to work in two days anyway. Since you have nothing to do at home, it's better to go out and have some fun.” A wide smile spread across Mom's face when she uttered, “Your dad and I have never gone for a vacation before, not even when we got married.” Upon hearing that, I was delighted. “Then you should seize this chance and go on a vacation. Although it's a bit late, think of it as your honeymoon.” Mom was obviously interested, but she still turned around to look at Dad and asked, “Dear, what do you think?”Dad looked indifferent. “You can go if you want to, but there's no need for Lili to pay for it. I'll treat you.” I was elated. At the moment, I felt that Dad was such a gentleman. After much consideration, they decided on the South East Aploth tour. Of course, I paid for it. Since I was the one who brought it up, there was no reason for them to spend their money. When we left the travel agency, Mom was over the moon. Even though Dad was reserved, I could notice the smile on his face. Abruptly, I felt that I made a good decision in bringing them out for a walk. On the way home, Mom excitedly named the things that she wanted to prepare and buy for the trip. Seeing that she was so excited, I felt glad as well. Since I would be staying for another two days, I told her that I would go out shopping with her the next day. When we got downstairs, the car in front of us suddenly turned on its hazard lights. I was not bothered about it until I saw that it was James who alighted the car. He had come to my house for dinner previously, so my parents could recognize him. After they greeted each other, my parents went upstairs first. Only then did I ask why he was here. Grinning, James took out a box from the car and handed it to me. “What is this? A New Year's gift?” Instead of answering my question, he said, “Okay, I've completed my mission perfectly. You can go home now. I've got a date with my sweetheart.” Having said that, he got into the car and drove off. I carried the box and went upstairs. Back in my bedroom, I opened the box and saw that there were two things inside. One of them was a cylindrical crystal container with a dried purple rose in it. Another one was a dog tag in the shape of a rose with Smokey's name carved on it. I could not help but burst into laughter. Is Dominic addicted to surprise events?
