The Second Love

Chapter 200 Our Relationship Is Unsalvageable

As I wept, I fell to my knees on the ground. It was Dad who came over and pulled me up. In the face of his grim expression, I tremblingly muttered, “I'm sorry, Dad...” Dad said nothing, merely heaving a sigh and patting me on the shoulder after regarding me for a long time. After that, Louis dragged me out of the morgue. When all the procedures had been settled, Dad told me to go home and pack first. Meanwhile, he and Louis would follow the funeral home staff to send my grandfather back to the village. The funeral would be held in the village, and my grandfather would be buried with my grandmother. As I watched a few people in black transferring my grandfather into the hearse, I couldn't hold my tears back. Tears streamed down my face like a faucet. Seeing me in such a condition, Dad reached out and pulled me into his embrace, pressing my head against his shoulder. He probably hadn't rested much since last night, for his voice was a tad hoarse when he spoke. “Your grandfather's death has nothing to do with you. It's only natural for humans to grow old, fall sick, and pass away. Don't take the blame upon yourself. As for the matter of you and Dom, we'll discuss it sometime after your grandfather's funeral. Don't worry, for your mother, brother, and I will never again allow you to be bullied. Now, go home quickly and help your mother pack your grandfather's belongings. Then, make the trip back to the village with your aunts. Lou and I will head there first.” I clutched at his clothes, weeping so hard that I almost couldn't catch my breath. However, I knew that he was also grieving my grandfather's passing. And now, he had to worry about me as well. For that reason, I didn't want anything else to happen to him. Composing myself, I lifted my head and wiped my tears. “Okay. Have a safe journey with Lou. Mom and I will be catching up with you both later.” After saying that, I turned to my brother, who hadn't said a single word. “Lou... Don't allow Dad to tire himself out, and be careful on your way,” I murmured. Still, Louis didn't say anything, merely nodding in acknowledgment. Thus, I knew that he must be blaming me as well. Sorrow deluged me, but I couldn't explain myself to him. It wasn't just him who blamed me, but even I myself did so. Biting my lip, I waited until I couldn't see their car anymore before stretching out a hand and hailing a taxi home. When I arrived back home, Mom was alone in the house. She told me that my aunts had left, and she stayed to wait for me. Dad had probably phoned her, for she repeated the plan once more without waiting for me to speak. She had already booked a taxi, so we could head straight back to the village after we were done packing. My grandfather hadn't had much—the exquisite tea set I gifted him and some clothes were the sum of his belongings. Throughout it all, my eyes stung. Mom was in no better condition either. On the whole, the atmosphere in the room was solemn and despondent. “Lili, pack the things in the cabinet over there. I'll go and get a bag.” After leaving me with that order, Mom whirled around and walked out. When I opened the cabinet she pointed at earlier, I was greeted by the sight of some bedsheets and pillowcases. Besides that, there was also an iron box. I took the iron box out. The moment I opened it and caught a glimpse of its contents, the tears I had been suppressing fell at once. I never thought Grandpa would keep all the worthless things I gave him when I was young and even preserved them so well! Furthermore... does this mean that he had been carrying them with him wherever he went? At the thought of that, wave after wave of pain inundated me. “Lili, come over here and give me a hand.” Upon hearing Mom calling out to me, I hastily lifted my hands and wiped my tears away. Mom is also devastated right now, so I can't have her crying with me! Putting the lid back on the iron box, I placed it aside before walking out of the room. No sooner had I left grandfather's room than a knock sounded at the door. While hollering at Mom, I went to open the door. “Wait for a moment, Mom! I'm going to see who's at the door first...” As soon as I swung open the door and saw Dominic standing right there, I stood frozen to the spot. For a long moment, I didn't know what to do or say until he reached out and grabbed me. “Why didn't you answer your phone? Do you know how many times I called you? Did you see the news, then? It isn't what you think. Camille and I—” Snapping back to my senses, I shook his hand off forcefully and roared, “Why are you here? Go away! Buzz off right this instant!” At that exact moment, the fury and loathing that had been brewing within me surged and exploded outward. “Liliana, I know you're angry, but can you please listen to my explanation? You can't simply condemn me without allowing me the opportunity to defend myself as you did back then, no?” Dominic walked closer to me once again. He grasped my arm tightly, with anxiety written all over his face. In response, I sneered, “Explanation? There's only room for an explanation for things that are salvageable. However, that's no longer possible for us.”All at once, Dominic's expression changed, abruptly turning glacial. “What do you mean by that? Are you going to break up with me again? Why won't you trust me, Liliana?” Right then, I didn't even want to say a single word to him. I shoved at him hard, trying to push him out the door. “All that isn't important anymore. All I want right now is for you to get out of my line of sight! You're not welcomed in my house!” “Liliana!” Dominic was far stronger than me, so despite me putting all my strength into it, I couldn't make him budge an inch. Considering the huge commotion over here, Mom naturally heard it and came over. “That's enough! Stop kicking up a fuss at such a time! Let him go, Lili.” “Have him get out, Mom!” I bellowed resentfully. “Come over here, Lili.” Mom didn't respond to my demand but dragged me away instead. Only then did I release my hold on Dominic and retreat to stand beside her. Nonetheless, my gaze remained fixated on him. “Helen, I know you might have misunderstood some things, but I can explain. I—” “Okay, that's enough.” Mom lifted a hand and waved it in a dismissive gesture, cutting off Dominic's unfinished utterance. “Dom, this isn't the time to speak about such a matter. Lili's grandfather has passed away, so we've got to rush back to the village right now. David and I will naturally question you about the matter between you and Lili after the funeral. You should leave for now.” Taken aback, Dominic exclaimed incredulously, “Grandpa has passed away? Why was it so sudden?” The moment I heard him, my heart grew even heavier. At the same time, my hatred toward him snowballed. If it weren't for him deceiving me and the fact that his engagement with Camille became public knowledge, Grandpa wouldn't have passed away so suddenly! Even if he wanted to end things with me, if he only gave me a bit of time and allowed me to explain things to Grandpa personally, Grandpa wouldn't have died! Right then, thoughts of Dominic having killed my grandfather filled my entire mind. As my blood boiled, I snagged an ornament from the television cabinet behind me and threw it at the man. It flew past his face, leaving a cut that dripped blood. With my eyes blazing scarlet, I turned a blind eye to his wound. “Did you not understand me, Dominic Hartnell? I told you to get out of here!”
