The Second Love
When I finally came back to my senses, I couldn't help but frown when I saw Milena's expression. The first thought that came to mind was that it was a lie. She was trying to create misunderstandings between Dominic and me so that we would break up. However, I was still perturbed. I'm not an idiot. Why would she tell such an obvious lie when I can easily verify its truthfulness once Dom comes back? Or is she telling the truth, and Dom was the one who lied to me? Could it be that he's not overseas, and he's really going to get engaged to Camille today? My fists balled up at the unpleasant thought. I was unwilling to believe nor even think about it. It was as I accidentally touched the ring on my finger that I realized how stupid I was to get flustered and panicked when I hadn't even heard from Dominic. I shouldn't doubt him just because I heard some ambiguous words from his mother. As I caressed the ring, I managed to get ahold of myself. I had only put on the ring when I was on my way back, thinking that it could give me courage. Now, it reminded me that I should trust Dominic. I was not blind nor stupid, and I could tell how desperate and genuine Dominic was when he said he wanted to marry me that day. Gazing at Milena, I uttered, “Mrs. Hartnell, Dominic is still busy working overseas. How could he be getting engaged to Camille?” Milena was slightly bewildered when she heard my words. The next moment, she curled her lips into a meaningful smile. “Dom is my son. I know better than anyone else whether he's really working overseas or spending time with his future wife. You must be thinking that I'm lying to sow discord between you and my son. Well, never mind. You'll know whether I'm telling the truth when you see it for yourself.” Once again, I was unsettled by her words.Just then, the door was pushed open, and in came a person whose arrival was not that surprising to me. Although it had been years since I last saw her, I could still recognize her at first glance. She was none other than Eleanor, Camille's mother. Before I could give any reaction, she had come up to me, and she seemed happy to see me. “You must be Lili! It's been years since we last met. Oh, you're still pretty as always. Do you still remember me?” I collected myself, forced a smile, and greeted her, “Of course. How are you, Ms. Porter?” Eleanor's smile broadened. “I'm good.” She then grabbed my hand and started to gabber in dissatisfaction, “I called you in the morning. Why didn't you answer? Didn't you promise to visit me today? I really wanted to catch up with you. Most importantly, since today is Camille's big day, I wish you could bury the hatchet and give her your best wishes. I believe that's what she would want as well.” I remained silent as she spoke. At that moment, her smile that I once thought was amicable now looked insincere and fake to me. It finally dawned on me the reason for both Eleanor and Milena wanting to see me today. The latter even asked someone to bring me to the hotel. The two of them must have planned this out beforehand. This shook my confidence in Dominic. Whether or not the engagement was true, there was a high possibility that he was really not abroad. Otherwise, they wouldn't be so confident. I freed my hand from Eleanor's grip and muttered, “Let's go. Didn't you say you want me at the ceremony?” At that moment, all I wanted was an explanation from Dominic. Before this, we had once broken up rashly because of a misunderstanding. This time, even if it would lead to the end of our relationship, I was determined to get an explanation from him. If he really lied to me, I would not hesitate to kick him in the balls. Both Eleanor and Melina were surprised to see my calm reaction, though they said nothing about it. As always, Melina cared little about me. As for Eleanor, her attitude wouldn't surprise me since I found out she was not that sincere of a person after all. I followed behind them in silence. Unbeknownst to anyone, although I looked calm and composed, I couldn't be more nervous. My palms were sweaty, and my legs were stiff as I walked. Dominic, I hope you won't let me down. Despite having braced and reminded myself to play it cool, the feeling of heartbreak was still hard to ignore the moment I saw him in the hall, looking charming in his tuxedo. He really lied to me... He's not overseas... After taking a few deep breaths, I eventually managed to suppress the urge to walk away like a coward. I needed an explanation from him. Just as I was about to walk toward him, the lights in the hall suddenly dimmed. A moment later, Dominic and Camille appeared in the middle of the stage, a spotlight directed at them. The handsome man and the beauty looked like a perfect match. Standing next to both of them were two pairs of middle-aged couples, whom I supposed were their parents. It was indeed ironic, for Dominic told me that his father would only return to the country after January. I clenched my fingers in my dress, yet I didn't leave immediately. When I heard his father's voice ring out in the hall, I suddenly realized what a fool I was. “Today is my son, Dominic, and the Madison family's daughter's engagement day. Thank you all for coming to witness their engagement...” I had no idea what else he said, nor did I know if the engagement ended on a high note. I couldn't bear to listen to this any longer, so I turned and left the scene. Ugh! I must be crazy. I should've left immediately instead of still wishing to get an explanation. How could the engagement be a fake one when they've invited all those guests? I knew Dominic well. If he was unwilling to, no one could force him into getting married to Camille. It was time for me to wake up and smell the coffee. It had been snowing for the past two days, and it was cold in Lightspring in January. I was shivering in the cold when I walked out of the hotel in a thin dress, like a lost soul with my heart frozen.
