The Second Love
After Milena lashed out, everyone fell silent. The only sounds in the air were Camille's sobs. At that moment, Milena's glare remained fixated on me. I glanced at Camille's figure. Though her face contorted with pain, there was a visible hint of glee that glinted in her eyes. “Milena, it's all my fault. Please don't blame Liliana. It was merely an accident...” Camille said, playing the role of a victim. I clenched my fists in anger and resisted the urge to rush toward her and give her a hard slap. Camille's pretense of kindness made my skin crawl with utter disgust. Besides, her explanation didn't help me gain any favors. Instead, it caused a dark look to loom across Milena's scowling face. “Liliana, I won't let this matter slide so easily.” In an attempt to defend myself, I opened my mouth and tried to clarify the situation. Yet, I decided against it. Even if I gave Milena a valid explanation, it'd be useless. She wouldn't believe my words. “Excuse me, could you let me pass? Thank you so much.” Shannon, who pushed her way through the crowd, gasped in shock when she noticed my reddened cheek. “Liliana, what happened to your face?” Before I could reply, her gaze darted toward Camille. “Did she hit you?” Given how angry Shannon looked, I could only assume that she planned to help me get revenge. Immediately, I held her back. I didn't want to cause another scene. “I'll explain it to you when we return. Let's go,” I urged quietly. Although I wanted to leave this place as soon as possible, Milena stopped me in my tracks. “Where are you going? Do you think I'd let you off the hook so easily? Have you seen what you did to poor Camille?” Milena yelled in anger.Reluctantly, the manager made his way over to stop me. He must be feeling a sense of responsibility for what happened to Camille. “Miss, because you were involved in this accident, it would be best if you stayed back until we get a clear explanation of the situation,” he said apologetically. Before I could respond, Shannon stepped forward in front of me like a mother hen protecting her chick. “An explanation? Are you trying to imply that my friend injured her on purpose? Shouldn't there be surveillance cameras in such a huge Starbucks? Wait till we lodge a report and use the surveillance footage as proof! Then we'll see if my friend actually harmed her on purpose, or this was all merely a fake ploy to garner pity and set my friend up!” Shannon cried out in outrage. Shannon paused before continuing, “Are you the manager? When the evidence is presented later, you mustn't tamper with the evidence to help the guilty. I reckon you know that it's an offense to do so.” Immediately, the manager smiled and tried to calm Shannon down. He must have been taken aback by Shannon's headstrong demeanor. Furthermore, making things ugly would ruin his business. “Miss, we are merely trying to solve the issue. In a situation like this, there's no way we would do such unlawful things.” Stonily, Milena turned to face me. “Birds of a feather flock together. Given that you are such a shameless woman who likes running her mouth, I'm not surprised that your friend possesses the same qualities as you do,” she remarked with disdain. When I heard Milena criticize Shannon, my waning patience vanished into thin air. “Mrs. Hartnell, Shannon is a friend of mine. She was merely trying to help me. Keep her out of this.” I couldn't help but grit my teeth in anger. “It was clearly an accident. Didn't Camille say so?” Milena let out a sneer. “Camille is too kind. Of course, she wouldn't blame you. But I'm no pushover.” “You old hag—” Shannon was about to give Milena a piece of her mind.Quickly, I reached out to stop her and shook my head. My actions caused her to glare at me. Clearly, she was displeased, yet she held her tongue and stepped back grudgingly. Finally, the manager dismissed the crowd of onlookers. At the same time, the medics had arrived at the scene, and they helped Camille to the ambulance. Naturally, Milena followed suit. Before entering the ambulance, she even turned around and warned me to follow her to the hospital. It looks like she's planning to settle the score with me after this. Her stubborn expression made me seethe in anger. It was clear that Milena had already assumed I was the perpetrator of the situation. If it weren't for Dominic's sake, I would have lost my temper. After the ambulance took off, Shannon called for a cab. When I heard her recite an address that wasn't the hospital, I quickly changed the destination and instructed the driver to drop us at the hospital.“What are you doing? Are you going to the hospital to endure a scolding? Also, who on earth hit you?” Shannon demanded angrily. Unconsciously, I touched my cheek. In the past, I was hit on the same cheek too. “That woman is Dominic's mother. Do you think I should go to the hospital?” Shannon fell silent for a moment before she said angrily, “Who cares if she's his mom? You can't let her bully you like that. It doesn't give her the right to hit you!” I did not comment any further. Should I call Dominic? He might be able to help me later... Shannon must have mistaken my silence for agreement. “In any case, she shouldn't have hit you! I can't believe she has the audacity to treat you like this when the two of you are only in a relationship. Besides, can you imagine how she'll behave after you marry Dominic? Also, what's with Camille? Did you see how Dominic's mother protected her? I was speechless to see Dominic's mother being so protective of Camille.” Admittedly, I was curious why Milena had taken such a strong liking to Camille. “Liliana, have you called Dominic? You should call him before his mom does,” Shannon suggested. After mulling over her suggestion, I decided to call Dominic and explain the situation to him. Even if I remained silent, Camille and Milena would tell him about it. But after I called his number, I was told that the line was busy. I guess I'm out of luck. I wonder who Dominic will side with now. When Shannon noticed my silence after calling Dominic, she guessed that he hadn't answered my call. Helplessly, she heaved out a heavy sigh. “Looks like they beat you to it. In truth, you shouldn't have talked to his mom in the first place. Remember to call him again, all right? Just because they can argue, it doesn't mean that you can't. No matter what, don't let them get the last word!” Shannon's desperation almost made me crack a smile.“Okay, I'll call him later. Shannon, why does it feel like you are angrier than I am?” I couldn't help but tease her. Playfully, Shannon pinched my arm. “Of course I'm angry! How could I remain calm when they bullied my best friend? Should I call Benjamin? Having a lawyer on our side might be useful.” I couldn't decide if I wanted to laugh or cry. After all, it was just a mishap. We wouldn't need any legal aid. “It's not as serious as it looks. I don't think his mom would—” All of a sudden, my phone's ringtone echoed in the air. I looked down and noticed that Dominic was calling me.
