The Second Love

Chapter 164 Leaving Discreetly

Amidst the pouring rain, passersby darted around to avoid being caught. However, Dominic and I stood motionless there. Drenched by the rain, I could no longer separate the tears from the raindrops. It was the same for Dominic. No longer arguing with me, he dragged me forcefully into the car. As the car door closed, it filtered out the pitter-patter of the rain. I felt the urge to get out, but Dominic pre-empted me by locking the door. At that moment, both of us fell silent. Frowning, he took out the towel I had bought but forgotten about. “Come over here.” I sat motionless, as if I hadn't heard him. Given that there was barely any room for me to back away, Dominic leaned over and roughly dried my hair with one hand. Grabbing the towel from his hand, I threw it back at him. “I don't need your help. Dry yourself instead.” After giving me the side-eye, Dominic tossed the towel aside. He sneered, “Liliana, despite being together for four years, don't you think it's a joke that there's barely any trust between us?” Stunned, I suddenly realized what he meant. At the end of the day, he still refused to admit his mistake. Instead, he was blaming me for it. “It's not that I don't trust you. It's you that have squandered my trust.” Taking a deep breath, I tried my best to keep my cool. “I'm really tired, Dominic. Let's just end this, all right? Since you have chosen Camille, you should live your life with her. As for me, there'll be someone else waiting for me somewhere. Let's—” Bam!A thundering noise rang out beside my ear. Dominic had smashed his fist against the glass window right behind me. “What is the truth? Is it simply based on what you thought you saw? Liliana, even if it was, haven't you ever thought about questioning me about it? How did you know what you saw was the truth? Unless, of course, the four years we spent together mean nothing to you. How can you not even be bothered to verify the truth? And all you can think of is ending our relationship?” Biting my lip, my body trembled violently. “You're the one who didn't care... You broke our promise first. Despite telling me that we would get married right after graduation, you left me before that. Dominic, it wasn't I who didn't care... It was obviously you...” Dominic's rage intensified, and his eyes turned bloodshot. He thundered, “In that case, you should've asked me about it. That's all you needed to do. Instead, you gave me a call and insisted on breaking up, casting me aside without a second thought. Is that your way of showing that you care?” I mumbled in response, “That day, on your birthday, I went to see you. However, when I arrived at the meeting place, I saw you hugging Camille. Both of you were...” After a brief pause, I continued, “You keep accusing me of not questioning you or verifying the truth. However, when I asked to break up with you, why didn't you ask me to stay? I was at the airport the day you and Camille went overseas. I saw both of you walking together and bantering happily. Dominic, all this while, you have never bothered to explain anything to me.” That day was the day I cried the hardest in the twenty-seven years of my life. I could barely see Dominic clearly as tears rolled down onto the back of my palms. I could feel the burn of every drop upon impact. Suddenly, I felt a warm sensation cover my face. Dominic wiped the tears off my face with his slender fingers. He sighed. “Liliana, it wasn't supposed to be this way between us.” I stared at him without saying a word. That's right. This wasn't supposed to happen. Is it because we were not meant to be together? In the end, I returned home with Dominic. However, we didn't say a word to each other. After taking our respective showers, we got into bed and turned off the lights. Although we were living together because he forced me to, we hugged each other to sleep from the very first day I moved in. By then, I had grown used to it. As long as he was around, I would always be lying on his shoulder to sleep. But that night, we slept with our backs facing each other. Each of us kept to our own side. I wasn't sure if Dominic slept, but I could barely sleep a wink at all. Although we had a big fight, I came out of it with a better understanding of the matter. Perhaps there was more to what I saw than met the eye. Camille must have gone to great lengths to ensure the success of her scheme. I did not sleep a wink the entire night. When Dominic got up, I pretended to be asleep despite hearing his movements. Sensing that he was walking toward me, I closed my eyes at once. It wasn't until I heard the door close that I gradually opened my eyes. After what had happened the night before, my mind was in a mess. I didn't know what to do about my relationship with Dominic. After lying in bed for a long time, I decided to go away so that I could think through the matter calmly. It wasn't just me. Dominic likely needed the space to do it too. Holding my groggy head, I got up and took a shower. After getting a change of clothes, I left the house. I headed straight for the train station and bought the first ticket out. Just when I was about to board the train, I pondered a moment and decided it was better to drop Dominic a message: I'm feeling confused right now and need to go somewhere to clear my mind. Dominic, don't come looking for me before I return to you. After sending the message, I turned my phone off at once. Based on Dominic's temper, I could imagine how furious he would be. However, I didn't give a damn. All I wanted to do was to have some alone time for a few days. Five hours later, I arrived at my destination. It was the historical canal town named Livingsfill, which was also a famous tourist destination. It had been a long time since I traveled. The peaceful and leisurely atmosphere of Livingsfill made it easy for me to relax. However, given my sudden arrival and the fact it was close to Christmas, all the hotels that I checked with were fully booked. As the sky was getting dark, I had no choice but to head to the grandly lit Livingsfill Hotel. Standing at the entrance, I sighed deeply when I realized I had to pay a price for being stubborn. It would cost me a bomb to just stay there for a few days alone. Just when I was about to step inside, I heard a voice call out to me.
