Chapter 20 I See The Road Utilizing only the moon's light, the group weaved, dodging and trying to keep themselves from tripping and falling; the group maneuvered to find their way out. The whole way sounds of child-like laughter followed them. Merna would turn her head left and right periodically when she thought she heard the sounds of whispering. "Do you know what they are saying?" Pierre adjusted Camile, stopping her from slipping off of his shoulder. "They are poking fun at us!" Merna turned her head to the side. "Some of them are saying how good we look and we most likely will taste even better!" Muttering, "That doesn't bring any comfort at all!" Pierre commented. Huffing out all the air in her lungs, "Well ... I hope I give them explosive diarrhea!" Pierre began to chuckle, "Only you would think like that!" The group had entered a partial clearing with a large body of water to their right; straight ahead was the road they had to get to. Emma jumped up and down, "Look!" She was pointing straight ahead of her, "A lamp post!" She declared, "And where there is a lamppost, there is a road!" Emma showed the first bit of enthusiasm. "Pierre!" Merna pointed to the road, "how long do you think it will take us to get to the road?" Her voice was filled with a newfound sense of hope! Adjusting his brother, "Less talking, more running!" Steve yelled as he struggled to move with his brother on his back. Out of everyone in the group, Steve was the one who struggled the most to keep his balance and motion his feet forward. With joy, "We are going to make it!" Emma exclaimed. "I never thought I could ever be this happier!" Losing his balance, Steve tumbled to the ground with his brother on his back. Rolling Markous off of Steve, "Let me help you!" Merna held out her hand for Steve to grab. Pulling with all her might, Steve soon was on his feet.Merna pointed to Markous's upper body, "You take your brother's arms." Merna grabbed hold of his feet. "And I will take the fool's legs!" Everyone ran as fast as they could. Struggling Merna was aiding Steve in carrying Markous. "Emma!" Merna yelled, "Could you give us a hand?" Steve was lifting most of his brothers' weight while Merna was lifting Markous's legs. Yet still they laboured! Steve was one hair away from collapsing while Merna did not have the strength to keep Markous' midsection from hitting the ground. "Eh!" Steve yelled, "Emma we could use your help over here!" Steve glances backwards. Emma was running up the hill, standing at the top, looking at the others. "I can see the road from here!" She exclaimed to the group. While Pierre was close behind Emma. Glancing over his shoulder he saw Steve and Merna wobbling back and forth. "EH!" Pierre yelled at Emma. Emma glanced back at Pierre, "what?" "Steve and Merna need your help!" Pierre shouted up at Emma. Emma started to laugh, "That is not my problem!" Emma began to dash in the direction of the road. Pierre lost all control of his temper, "are you fucking for real?" The group watched as Emma disappeared! The male's earlier voice could be heard again, "Time is up ... little piggies!" Emma was being dragged by an unseen force, "NO!" She cried! Black mist consumed the group, as confusion grasped each of them. Out of fear, Steve drops his brother and runs away from the creatures that are chasing him. He was able to dodge his attackers. But between fear and the lack of energy, he soon succumbed to exhaustion. The sounds of his screams were silenced and replaced by cheering. For a moment Emma was able to shake off what had held her. Quickly she got to her feet and began to run away from the location she was at. However, she stumbled to the ground and was dragged back to the creator's desired location. Unable to fight off her attackers, she was swiftly taken over. Emma screamed for help, but her pleas were muffled by the spirits. One of the males announced to her that no one would come and save her, not even Merna or Pierre.It was at that moment that Merna glanced up at the sky. The moon was past the high peak. If she was gauging everything, the master of the land had given them more time to get out of here. 'Could it be that he chose this place on purpose, or was he going to let us go?' Merna thought to herself. Merna was speechless and could not take her eyes off the black mist speeding in her direction. Roughly Pierre positioned Camile on the ground. Pierre was able to dodge the first attack. As Pierre moved away from Camile, her unconscious body was taken along with Markous. "Tracker you have yet to disappoint me!" The male was laughing. Pierre wouldn't go down without a fight, "fight me like a man!" Merna shouted at Pierre as the mist slowly enclosed her, "this is no man!" "You are correct little one, I am not a man!" The male confirmed Merna's thoughts. "All good things must come to an end!" The black mist encloses Merna. The darkness was so thick that Pierre could not see Merna. But, with Merna's willpower, she mentally pushed the night away from her body. Pierre's boots hit the ground harshly as he drove to Merna's rescue. "Leave Merna alone and fight me, you son of a bitch!" Pierre started to swing as if he was trying to punch the entity. "Interesting!" The male sounded amused. "Little one, what do you think you are going to achieve here by fighting against me?" Pierre was pulled away from Merna by unseen forces. Pierre attempted to stand on his feet only to find that he was overwhelmed and brought back to the earth. Again, the entity attacks Merna, forcing her to her knees. The thick black mist blanketed her. Like before, Merna protected herself, and with a bit of trouble, she stood on her feet. "I haven't been entertained like this in a long time, but all good things must come to an end … say your goodbyes to your friends, little pet!" The male's voice rang in the air around them. Stumbling to free himself and get to Merna, "NO!" Panic and rage-fueled Pierre. Merna fell to the ground from exhaustion, glancing for a second, "Sorry!" Writers note Second scene The group's fate had been sealed the second they set up their portable dwellings. Giving them a faulty sense of hope to safely leave, the Master of the land never had intended to release this group. Especially once the Master found out he had a Hybrid in his clutches. Fate will reveal four mates! At the mercy of the Master, will he show favour or will the Master continue with his original plans?
