The Wolves Beneath the Sanctuary

Chapter 500 Scared Shitless

Indigo’s p.o.v. I slowly open my eyes, after a good night’s sleep and I can’t tell if it is still night or already day. This tree has grown so many branches over the years and each of them is filled with leaves, making it pitch black in here. Jocelyn’s breathing tells me that she is still in a deep sleep and I quietly open my backpack to reach for my phone, I keep it inside as I take a look at the time. It is just after six in the morning and I decide to get a little more rest, but I doubt I will be able to fall asleep again. I just stare up at the roof of branches and leaves above me, I can’t even tell what kind of weather it is on the other side of the tree. It could be pouring out there and we still wouldn’t feel a drop. Like the past few days we eat a snack in our hide-out and after climbing out of the tree we shift into our Wolf form, they can hunt along the way to keep up their stamina. Kardia is in her element, she loves running in the forest and she loves to hunt. I use the time to talk to Jocelyn about our journey, about our future and so much more. “Jocelyn, promise me that you will come for me if they catch me. I can’t live with your Brother as my Mate.” I say. We both know that our lives will be hell with the other’s Brother as our Mate, I doubt the Goddess would grant them a fated Mate if she was still involved. “You know I will never allow him to mark you, but you have to promise me the same.” Jocelyn responds and she knows I will come for her. I know that something is wrong, Erylis is too anxious for my liking and I decide to concentrate on our surroundings. If there is something I have learned about Erylis, it is to trust her gut feelings and at the moment our lives might depend on it. Kardia keeps sniffing the air, but so far she hasn’t picked up any scent and that in itself is very peculiar. She sometimes catches a hint of a scent, but never something strong enough to identify. “Erylis, anything?” I ask, but the only responds I get is a low growl and it is enough for me to know that trouble has found us. “RUN.” I scream through the mind-link and we both speed up, not looking behind us. Our Wolves keep speeding up, but not running at top speed. We will save that for when it is absolutely necessary, when we are in danger of getting caught. We can hear paws stomp the ground somewhere behind us, but for now they are not closing in on us and we keep running at our current speed. From the sounds of the paws stomping the ground, I would say that there are three or four Wolves behind us. I have ruled out Lycans, because they would have caught up to us by now or they would have snuck up on us. No, the ones in pursuit are Wolves and my best guess would be our Fathers and our Brothers. Erylis has the advantages of being a Gamma’s Daughter and Kardia follows her closely, knowing how to follow Erylis without causing problems for either one of them. A roar is heard in the distance, but I am not sure who released the roar. “That is Father, he is not happy.” Jocelyn says and Erylis swerves to the right, away from the direction the roar came from. I don’t know for how long we have been running, but the exhaustion start to creep in and even Erylis has to slow down a little. The Wolves are still behind us and from the sound it is clear that they have gained on us, the distance between us is getting less and less. The sun is starting to set and that is the only indication I have that the day has passed us by, but when you are on the run there isn’t always a chance to check the time. “There are many Wolves ahead of us, can you smell them?” Jocelyn asks and Kardia takes a good sniff, we will at last be save from our families. “Let’s find them. I would rather take my chances with them, then with that Asshole that you call a Brother.” I say to Jocelyn, even though I am scared shitless. Just as Kardia is speeding up, a Wolf barrels into her side and she loses her balance. She keeps rolling until she is able to get solid ground under her paws and dashes away from the Wolf that attacked her. Kardia recognized his Wolf, it is Jocelyn’s Brother and that means her own Brother isn’t far behind. Erylis is roaring loudly, but I know that I can’t look back. Kardia keeps sniffing the air and she follows the scent of a Pack, there is no doubt in her mind that we are running towards a Pack of Wolves. I need to keep enough distance between me and the Asshole that wants to mark me against my will. We are close to leaving the forest, when a Wolf collides with us again and we come to a full stop against a tree. Kardia gets up as she growls at Jocelyn’s Brother, she slowly backs out of the forest and she knows that the other Wolves have seen her.Erylis lunges at her Brother, shoving him away from me and I keep slowly moving backwards to freedom, I hope. Kardia is turning around towards the other Wolves, when someone clams his jaws shut on her hind leg and she howls out in pain. Another Wolf slams her head against a tree and even though she tries to fight it, we slowly lose consciousness. The last thing we hear before everything goes black is a mighty roar from Erylis, the last thing we see before everything goes black is a huge black Wolf with emerald green eyes.
