The Wolves Beneath the Sanctuary
Umayza Conri has stepped to my other side to make communicating a little easier and Evander has handed over control to Mylo. Both males stare at Mylo as he roars in their direction. I stroke his flank as I say, “Okay, Baby. I know you don’t like it when someone threatens a family member, but you might want to let these two breath.” Before I can ask or say anything else both males shift into their Wolves and high tail it out of there. Conri asks me why the hell I said that and I just shrug my shoulders, “It helped, didn’t it.” I reply and I hear Dad laughing behind me. Asilda throws her arms around me as soon as I turn around, she keeps whispering thank you. Once we are inside the diner with our food in front of us, I ask Asilda who the other male was and it turns out that that was her Brother, a Brother she hadn’t seen since she had left for the Academy seven years earlier. No one in her family had reached out to her during those seven years. “Don’t worry, Sis.” Evander says. “I will contact you so often when I am on assignment you are going to wish for those days to return.” He winks at her as she giggles into Orion chest. Dad, Conri and Evander keep an eye out for the males when we head back to the SUV, but apparently they learned their lesson. I had started on the third journal during lunch, but it was more of the same as the other two journals. Dad tells in the SUV that Calliope and Wenonah each had written two journals, “Good, I want each of you to read one. If they used the journals like their ancestors did, then the Council will have enough to end Night Shade Pack. So far every journal contains a list of every assignment the writer did, for who she did it and when she did it. The most important thing though is that it also reveals the outcome; what happened to the person they were spying on.” I say and as I grab journal number four Dad hands out the other journals. There is a comfortable silence in the SUV and I get engrossed into what I am reading, this female didn’t do much with her ability as her health was lacking. She mainly wrote about what her family told her about their experience with their gift and I find out I need to read the journal of her Niece, because she experienced what I had experienced. I lean over the seat to get the next journal as I see movement behind us, “Uhm, guys. There is something or someone behind us.” I say as I keep looking for the right journal and once I have it I sit back down in my seat. Conri grabs hold of me and I know he is looking out the back window to see who or what it is. “Orion, pull over. I am going to kick someone’s ass.” Conri growls and when we get out of the SUV, I see that it is just the rest of their Squad. “Umayza, you wanna deal with Theron?” Conri asks and Theron looks at me with his hands raised in the air. I can sense that Kane wants to push forward and I step in front of him as I place my hand on his cheek, “Kane, calm down. I doubt Captain Armand knew about our encounter at the diner, if he had known he would have told us he was right behind us and not scared the living daylights out of us.” I say. Dad quickly explains to them what happened at the diner and after Asilda tells Callan the name of her former Pack, things settle down a bit, but I am not releasing Conri because Kane is still close to the surface. Callan returns with some shocking news, turns out Asilda’s former Pack no longer exists. The Alpha tried to forcefully mark the Daughter of a neighboring Alpha and instead of accepting the challenge, he attacked them, but he lost. Only a handful of members survived and they all chose to leave the area, the male we saw claiming to be her Alpha was his Son. “Council-member Vivyanna said she found out after you left the Academy and she was planning on telling you in person about what had happened, but your Brother beat her to the punch.” Callan says and Kane is finally calm enough that I no longer worry that he will take over. According to the records Vivyanna was able to find, none of Asilda’s other family members survived and all of this happened four years ago, “No wonder they never contacted me.” She says, but Orion is quick to point out they didn’t contact her in the three years before that. “Asilda, you have a family. You have us.” Dad says to her as he holds her in his arms. “Oh and you better start calling me Dad.” He says before he kisses her on her forehead. Asilda finds comfort in Orion’s arms as Captain Armand informs us that Alpha Drew is expecting us. “No, Orion. He has no idea that you are coming, just that I will arrive with my Squad at request of the Council. Theron thought you wanted to surprise Ma and I don’t know Alpha Drew enough to rely on him to keep it a secret.” Armand explains and he also tells us to drop his title as Captain of the Squad. His men only do it when they are on assignment and right know all of them have a few weeks off.
