The Pack’s Lost Daughter

Chapter 241

Third Person's POV It had been because Celestine cried so miserably that day that Alpha Remus had softened and told the children the stray kitten would be sent away and left to starve. Had that single lie... given others the opening they needed? It felt as though a barbed blade had been driven straight into his chest. Yet the projection was not finished. This time, a young man appeared on the screen. Weariness clung to his face like dust from a long road. When he looked into the camera, guilt shadowed his eyes. "That car accident back then... someone did bribe my father to do it." "At the time, I was sick. Our den needed money. That woman said she didn't have much time left anyway-just staging an accident would be enough to change the fate of two children." He swallowed, hesitation tightening his throat. "But... later my father realized that the one she wanted him to kill wasn't only herself. There was also a little girl at the scene. Five or six years old." His voice trembled. "If it hadn't been for a stray kitten that tripped the child and made her fall away from the impact... my father would have committed an unforgivable sin." "These things... my mother only told me before she died," he continued softly. "She said that if anyone ever came to investigate, I must not hide anything. I had to tell them everything." He pressed his lips together. "My parents only realized later that that woman likely had deeper schemes. But back then, I needed money for surgery. They had no choice but to lie. I am willing to bear the punishment in their place." In the final second of the video, he lifted his gaze to the lens. "If the girl from that year is still alive... I want to say this to you." "I'm sorry."...... The screen went dark. The grand hall fell into deathly silence-broken only by Luna Evelyn's broken sobbing. Just moments ago, many had pitied Yuna Ward for having such a sister. Now, they only felt that Yuna Ward herself was no less terrifying. Every Alpha and Luna present could see the scheme clearly. To use the final seven or eight months of her own life... to step on her sister's daughter and rewrite her own child's destiny against the will of the heavens- Yuna Ward had been truly ruthless. The savage darkness of such malice struck deep into every wolf's instincts. The box in Luna Evelyn's hands contained much the same as what the projection revealed-only with colder proof layered in: diagnosis reports, transaction records, sealed documents of blood and coin. Her eyes nearly bled as she turned to the final page of a diary. Yuna Ward had always kept records. Back then, it was her diary that had exposed her secret feelings for Alpha Remus. And before her death-while weaving her final schemes-she had left behind veiled confessions once more. The last line was a venomous mockery aimed straight at Luna Evelyn: "My little sister is naïve and foolish, yet absurdly fortunate. Pity-she is destined to be my defeated pawn. Death is not to be feared. Our twisted destinies will be corrected in the next generation. Luna Evelyn-farewell." "Ah-!!" Luna Evelyn erupted into a scream that tore through the hall like a wounded beast's howl. She shredded the diary into fragments with frantic hands. "Yuna Ward! You ruined my life!! My daughter-my daughter-what did she ever do wrong?!" She shrieked and cursed in madness. When her eyes locked onto the memorial portrait Jackson's people had brought, she seized the cake knife from the table and charged forward like a rabid wolf. The man holding the portrait was so terrified by her frenzied gaze that he flung the image far away onto the lawn outside. He had thought carrying a memorial portrait would be the easiest task of the night-no one had told him it came with the risk of death. Luna Evelyn had completely lost reason. She fell to her knees, eyes blood-red, and stabbed the knife down again and again into Yuna Ward's torn photograph. "I'll kill you! I'll kill you, Yuna Ward! Hahaha-why?! Why?! Come for me if you dare! Take me with you if you have the power! My Aysel-my daughter-ahhhhh!! Even in death you'll fall into the deepest hell! Into hell!!" Alpha Remus, Fenrir, and the Moonvale brothers rushed forward to restrain the woman who had gone fully mad. But Jackson only watched her coldly. His voice was calm, merciless: "Yuna Ward was calculating, yes. But the ones who truly abused their own daughter... were you." He lowered his gaze slightly. "Aysel asked me to pass on a message." "She carried one human life on her shoulders for seventeen years. No matter how great your so-called birth grace was-it has been repaid. From today forward, do not seek reconciliation. Do not speak of remorse." "Because she will never forgive you." As for what Alpha Magnushad said-that everything the Moonvale Pack owed Aysel, he would reclaim one by one-there was no need to announce it. They would feel it soon enough. "Let's go. End this." Jackson cast one final indifferent glance at the shattered Moonvale Pack and gave the order. Yellow spirit-paper rained down across the entire ceremonial field. The mournful cry of the erhu rose once more, long and distant, echoing like the song of the dead. The envoys Aysel had sent arrived without warning-and departed just as cleanly. Celestine had been terrified by Luna Evelyn's madness. Yet when she saw the destroyed portrait of her birth mother, she still couldn't stop herself from stepping forward. "Mom..." She reached out and grabbed Luna Evelyn's wrist that still held the knife. "Don't call me that!" Luna Evelyn glared at her, grinding the words through her teeth. In her scarlet eyes burned the same hatred and revulsion she once bore for Yuna Ward. "Yuna Ward is your real mother!" "Mom..." Celestine staggered under the blow of those words. "I was only eight back then. I didn't know anything. We were mother and daughter for seventeen years-will you truly refuse to acknowledge me now?" As long as the final card hadn't been overturned... she could still struggle for survival. "Eight?" Luna Evelyn laughed loudly through her tears. She wrenched her wrist free and swung it wildly. "My Aysel was only six. She was only six years old." "Let go of me. Let go of me-" "I-" Celestine's words broke off abruptly. Her eyes widened as she looked down at her own body. "Mom!!" Two more screams rang out in horror. The guests turned toward the cries- Only to see the blade in Luna Evelyn's hand slash open a huge strip of flesh along Fenrir's arm-then plunge straight into Celestine's abdomen. "Ahhh! Help! Murder!!" "Call the healers-NOW!!"
