My Best Friend Became My Fiancé

Chapter 240: Wherever Roman Goes

Chapter 240 Wherever Roman Goes Savannah I woke up screaming. Not softly. Not gently. I jolted awake like someone had ripped me out of a nightmare by the throat, my lungs burning as I sucked in air, my heart slamming so violently against my ribs it hurt. My hands flew to my stomach before my eyes even fully opened. I pressed my palms there—hard. Desperate. As if I could physically shield my baby from everything that had gone wrong. As if I could still feel it, reassure myself that it was still inside me. Still alive. Still safe. “Oh God—no, no, no—” “Savannah!” Alyssa’s voice cut through the fog as she rushed to my bedside, her hands hovering uselessly over me, unsure where to touch. “Jesus Christ, Sav, slow down. Take it easy. You’re going to hurt yourself—” “Where is my baby?” I gasped, my voice breaking as panic flooded me all at once. My vision blurred instantly. “Where is my baby? Is my child okay?” Her face paled. “Savannah, calm down,” she said quickly, gripping my wrist to stop my frantic movements. “The baby is fine. Your child is okay.” I shook my head violently. “No. Don’t lie to me. Please don’t lie to me.” My throat closed as tears spilled over. “Tell me the truth, Alyssa. Tell me if my baby is really okay.” “I swear to you,” she said, her voice firm now, grounding. “You can ask the doctor yourself. It was a stress-induced bleeding. That’s all. The baby is fine. Everything is fine—for now.” “For now?” I echoed weakly. She hesitated. Then sighed. “You scared us, Sav. You scared me. You were pushing yourself too hard. Running on adrenaline. Not thinking about the baby. We might not be so lucky next time.” Guilt hit me like a punch to the chest. “I didn’t mean to,” I whispered. “I wasn’t thinking. Are you sure the baby's okay? Julius hit me—he elbowed me—” “Hey.” Alyssa softened instantly, squeezing my hand. “Your baby is fine. It's strong. That's a tough little fighter you got in there.” She managed a faint smile. “It’ll take more than that to chase it away.” My shoulders sagged as relief finally broke through the terror. A sob tore out of me, raw and uncontrollable. I covered my face, shaking as everything I’d been holding in crashed down at once. Then it hit me. Roman. “What about Roman?” I cried, my head snapping up. “Where is he? Where is my fiancé?” The words tumbled over each other. “Is he out of surgery? Is he okay? Can I see him? What day is it today?” Alyssa’s smile vanished. “Savannah—” “Please,” I begged. “Please, just tell me.” “You passed out yesterday. It's a new day today.” She exhaled slowly. “Roman is out of surgery. He’s alive.” The breath I released was loud, shaky, almost painful. “Oh God,” I whispered. “Thank God.” “But—” she added carefully, “you can’t see him right now. The doctors advised against it.” I didn’t care. I didn’t even argue. I just collapsed back against the pillows, covering my face as tears poured down my cheeks. It felt like waking into a nightmare that refused to end.“I don’t know what to do anymore,” I sobbed. “Everything feels wrong. Like this isn’t real. Like I’m stuck in some horrible dream I can’t wake up from.” My chest tightened painfully. “It feels like my world is falling apart. I feel like I’m drowning, Alyssa. Like I’m losing my mind.” She leaned forward, alarmed, when I tugged at my hair. “Sav, stop—don’t do that. You need help. You need to talk to someone. You're losing your mind.” “I can’t do this,” I cried. “I can’t survive it if something happens to him. I won’t.” My voice broke completely. “I’ll die. I’ll just… I’ll just kill myself and join him—” “Savannah!” Alyssa gasped, horrified. “Stop it. Don’t say that. What is wrong with you? Have you completely lost it?” “But it’s the truth!” I screamed. “Roman is my world. He’s everything. I can’t live without him. I won’t.” She stared at me like she didn’t recognize me anymore. “I did this,” I whispered, curling inward. “This is my fault. I pushed him. I forced him into this. I told him to end everything quickly. God, I was so stupid.” I dragged a hand down my face. “I never should have dropped the gun. Now his father is here, threatening everything, and I don’t even know what to do anymore.”“Wait,” Alyssa said slowly. “That man earlier… he’s really Roman’s dad?” “Yes.” She nodded, understanding dawning. “That explains a lot. He looked similar to Gerald—” She paused. “Ryan.” My head snapped up. “Explains what? Alyssa, what do you mean? Is something wrong with Roman?” “No. Nothing went wrong—” “Is he truly out of danger?” I demanded. “Is he dying?” She took a deep breath and reached for my hand. “Savannah, I’m going to hold your hand when I tell you this.” Fear crawled up my spine. “Why?” I whispered, pulling away. “What are you about to say?” Her eyes glistened. “Roman is in a coma.” The world stopped. I stared at her, shaking my head slowly. “No. No, that’s not possible. He can't be in a coma.”“Sav—” “No!” I screamed. “Don’t tell me to calm down. You don’t understand what this feels like.” Her voice cracked. “I know I don’t. But I do know this—it could have been worse.” She swallowed hard. “He lost a lot of blood and went into shock, Sav. He flatlined twice during surgery. He almost died. His father had to donate blood to save him.” My chest caved in. “If his father hadn’t been here…” she whispered, “we would be telling a very different story right now.” I broke. I cried until my chest hurt. Until my throat burned. Until everything inside me felt hollow and raw. “So what?” I sobbed. “What now? I’m supposed to be grateful that he’s trapped between life and death?” My voice shook violently. “That he’s basically a vegetable now? That nobody knows when—or if—he’ll wake up?” She didn’t answer. “Answer me!” I yelled. “Savannah!” Alyssa shouted back, tears streaming down her face. “Roman is strong. He’ll wake up. I believe that. He's not going to leave you and the baby alone.” “When? When is he going to wake up?” I demanded. “When I’m nine months pregnant? When our baby is born? When it's learning to ride a bike?” My chest heaved. “When exactly?” “No one knows!” she cried. “No one. All we can do is pray.” I collapsed back, sobbing quietly now. Exhausted. Empty. “I never should have let that gun go. I never should have wrestled for it with Julius,” I whispered. The door opened then, and a nurse entered with a tray. We fell silent. “I'm just going to collect your blood sample to run some further tests.” She said, I nodded, wiping my tears. After she finished prepping my arm, I asked softly, “What about my fiancé? I came in with him. Roman Blackwood?” The nurse hesitated. Then she answered. “We’re preparing him for transfer.” My heart slammed painfully. “Transfer? What do you mean?” She pressed her lips together, clearly not wanting to speak further. “Please,” I begged. “He’s my fiancé. We’re having a baby.” She sighed. “General Blackwood arranged for him to be moved to his residence. He’s built a private ICU there. A helicopter is on its way to transport the patient as we speak.” “No,” I whispered, shaking my head. “I won’t let him take Roman away.” I swung my legs off the bed. “Wherever Roman goes,” I said hoarsely, “I go. And if he's taking him back to Blackwood Manor, then I'm going with him.” And for the first time since I woke up, something inside me hardened. I wasn’t losing him. Not like this.
