Reborn as the Baby Sister Everyone Spoiled—and the One He Loved
After narrowly escaping a life-threatening ordeal, Anna's face had turned a ghostly pale, her lips barely tinged with color. Her delicate features now seemed fragile and drawn, but there was an undeniable, almost eerie beauty about her. Despite her weakened state, Anna still exuded an enchanting charm. Elaine carefully placed the fruit basket and bouquet of flowers on the table before silently approaching the bedside. Her eyes scanned the monitors beside Anna, and everything seemed to be in order. The surgery had been a success, and with some time to recover, Anna would be back on her feet before long. Her leg had been saved, and her life, unlike her previous one, wouldn't end in suffering. Elaine felt a deep sense of relief. Both women remained asleep, and Elaine had no intention of disturbing them. She placed an order for breakfast for both of them on her phone and settled into the chair beside Anna's bed, waiting patiently for her to wake up. Knock, knock, knock. Just as Elaine relaxed into the chair, there was a knock at the door. Frowning slightly, she stood up, only to be surprised when the door opened unexpectedly. To her astonishment, it was none other than Jay, his handsome face framed in the doorway. What is he doing here? Isn't it time for his surgery? Jay didn't expect to find Elaine here either. He paused for a moment, clearly caught off guard. "Elaine, what are you doing here?" He had been so focused on Anna's condition. After changing into his white coat at the office, he rushed to the hospital to check on her. It still felt surreal—he had thought her leg was beyond saving if it meant preserving her life, yet she had pulled through. He wanted to verify her condition again. But finding Elaine here was completely unexpected. "Shh!" Elaine whispered urgently, pressing her finger to her lips as she quickly moved to the door, trying to push Jay out of the room. He stared at her, confused. "What are you doing?" Elaine replied firmly, "Anna's still asleep. Don't wake her." Jay shot her a disapproving look. "Wake her? I'm a doctor. What do you know?" Elaine blocked the doorway, determined not to let him in."Aren't you supposed to be in surgery this morning? How do you have time to be here?" she asked. "Move. My surgery is about to start. I just need to check on her," Jay insisted, his voice filled with urgency. "No, you can't," Elaine said, her voice resolute. Jay's expression shifted as he seemed to remember something. "Oh, so when you said your friend, you were talking about Anna, right?" "Yeah," Elaine replied, nodding. Jay's excitement grew. "Do you know Anna has a friend who is studying medicine?" Elaine hesitated for a moment, unsure of how to respond. Noticing her reluctance, Jay pressed on, "She's about 17 or 18, tall, slim ... Do you know someone like that?" He gestured as he spoke, eager to find out who the girl was.Elaine's face remained emotionless. "No." A seventeen or eighteen-year-old girl? How did he make that judgement? But I guess it's better this way. This way, I won't have to worry about him suspecting anything. Jay furrowed his brow. "I knew it. It's pointless asking you. What good are you?" She's not going to call me "Jay" anyway. I'll just be firm with her now. That way, she might be intimidated and behave better. Elaine shot back, "Did I ask you to ask me?" Jay was left momentarily speechless. At that moment, Jay's phone rang—it was his assistant. He dismissed the call with a frustrated sigh. It was a reminder that he needed to head to the operating room.Muttering under his breath, "You're useless," he walked away, still irritated. He had to get to surgery. Anna isn't going anywhere, and maybe that girl isn't even a friend of both Elaine and Anna—just Anna's. Once Anna wakes up, I will get the answers I want. Elaine returned to the room to find that both Anna and Hannah were awake now.
