Seraphina Is Back—and She’s Not Alone
The next morning, Evalyn yawned as she wandered into the dining room. Her steps faltered when she caught sight of the table. She blinked in disbelief, rubbed her eyes, and then stared again at the two people sitting there: her uncle, and Seraphina. "Sera, you—what are you doing here?" Evalyn's voice was laced with shock, her gaze darting between Jason and Sera. Suspicion crept into her eyes as they narrowed slightly. Something felt off. She couldn't quite put her finger on it, but there was a strange atmosphere between the two of them, as if something significant had happened. Before she could voice her curiosity, Jason beat her to it. His tone was firm as he gestured to the chair opposite him. "Sit down and eat." "Oh," she replied, nodding obediently. She slid into her seat, her questions temporarily set aside. As they ate, his calm yet commanding voice broke the silence. "Your finals are coming up in a few days. If your grades don't pass this time, you're coming back to Pearlpoint with me for the year." The mention of finals immediately derailed Evalyn's train of thought. Her curiosity about Sera and Jason vanished as her face scrunched into a pout. "I'm not going back. That's not my home," she muttered defiantly, her whole demeanor radiating resistance. Jason said nothing more. Resigned, Evalyn buried herself in her food. Midway through her meal, she looked up at him with a puzzled expression and asked, "Uncle Drakon, aren't you leaving yet?" You're not very motivated about work today, are you? she mused. "I'm not in a rush," he replied simply, his tone as composed as ever. She pursed her lips. Ten minutes later, the three of them left the dining room together. Two cars were already parked by the entrance. Evalyn guided Seraphina toward the second car in the back. "I'll drive you," Jason said, his tone calm yet firm. Evalyn was about to decline, but the moment her gaze met her uncle's, her confidence crumbled instantly. Without another word, she led Seraphina toward the car in front, trying to avoid further confrontation. Jason stepped ahead, pulling open the car door with one hand while the other rested protectively on the roof. His thoughtful and gentlemanly behavior made Evalyn click her tongue in silent disapproval. "Thank you, Jason," Seraphina said politely, her voice soft yet sincere. Jason's lips curved into a faint smile. "No need to thank me." Evalyn, never one to hold back, interjected with a teasing grin, "Thanks, Uncle Drakon." Jason responded with a neutral hum before settling into the driver's seat. Without another word, he started the car and personally drove them to school. As soon as Jason left, Evalyn turned to Seraphina with a mischievous smile, her face practically glowing with curiosity. "Come on, spill it, Sera! What were you up to last night? Don't tell me you were with my uncle?" "You're overthinking things!" Seraphina replied, her tone defensive, though a slight blush betrayed her composure. Evalyn didn't look convinced. Seraphina, catching Evalyn's suggestive expression, sighed in exasperation. She raised a hand and flicked her lightly on the forehead. "Get those ridiculous thoughts out of your head already!" Evalyn pouted, covering her forehead like a child. "Ow! Why are you and my uncle both so fond of flicking my forehead? You must've picked up the habit from him!" … To avoid dragging things out, Seraphina took the afternoon off and met up with Oliver directly. When he saw her safe and sound, he let out a long breath of relief. The tension in his chest finally eased. "Yesterday was way too close!" he exclaimed, his voice still tinged with lingering fear. "I was scared out of my mind last night. Thank God you were quick-witted enough to get out of there. If anything had happened to you, I don't think I could ever forgive myself." He was scared when he thought of what happened last night. If it weren't for receiving her message later confirming she was safe, he probably wouldn't have been able to sleep a wink all night. Now, seeing her standing there, unharmed and in front of him, the heavy weight he had been carrying lifted. "Did you find the USB drive?" he asked urgently. Seraphina reached into her bag and pulled out the small device. The moment his eyes landed on it, his expression transformed. His gaze lit up with intensity, and his face filled with a mixture of exhilaration and relief. "This is it! We'll hand it over to the police and finally see that sc*mbag Myles get what he deserves!" His words were filled with anticipation, almost trembling with the sheer excitement of the moment. He had waited for this day for what felt like an eternity. The idea of finally seeing justice served ignited a fire within him. "Not so fast," she interrupted. He turned to her, his excitement momentarily replaced with confusion. "Myles has been deeply entrenched in Pyrin for years," she explained. "His network of connections runs far and wide, and it's messy. If we want to avoid any unexpected twists, we need a backup plan. One copy goes to the police, and the other gets released online for public oversight. Let the people keep an eye on him, too."
