When the Galaxy Wept
The woman’s face was obscure. He saw that the man reached out his arms to hold the woman’s waist and kissed her gently. The woman was like a flower blooming in that man’s arms. They held each other as if they were the most passionate lovers and would never leave each other. Evan didn’t know why he would dream of this couple, but that scene was played again and again like a knife cutting his heart. He lowered his head in a trance. He saw that he was standing by the water. His metal head and body were reflected on the surface of the water, shining dimly in the wave. Tears fell from the red eyes made of silicon sometimes. How could a machine man have tears? He dimly thought that it was the only thing that he had loved and forgotten in the past thousands of years. But what was it? What was it? Evan looked bad when he woke up the next morning. After watching the sunrise with Yates and having breakfast, he finally left. Patrick watched him leave and held his lover more tightly. Evan went back to his home, and Kahlil had waited for him for a long time. He brought a girl with him. Just as Evan demanded, she was pretty, small, and had fair skin and big, bright eyes. Kahlil left soon. He had sex with the woman for a whole night and fell asleep in the morning. He didn’t wake up until the evening. The woman was sitting on the bed nervously because she didn’t know what to do. Evan waved his hand and told her that she could do whatever she wanted. Then he lit a cigarette and vaguely thought there was still something missing from the woman’s body. What was it then? **** It was a bright, sunny day. The sky was as blue as the ocean but more peaceful. Emerald and Candy walked out of the car. Emerald pulled her son, who was one and a half years old, and followed his step. The two women and the boy were walking along the stone road in the woods of the mountain. Candy was wearing a broad-brimmed hat on her long wavy hair, and the short pink dress was just below her knees, which made her gorgeous. Emerald’s hair was pulled back in a ponytail, and she was wearing a casquette, looking neat and pretty. Emerald looked at the villa in front of her in confusion, “When did Kahlil build a house here?” Candy smiled, “He said the scenery was beautiful here, and he wanted to have a child here.” Emerald touched her son’s soft little hands, and she couldn’t imagine what their child would be like. A child of a machine man and a human. But Candy didn’t seem to be worried, so she didn’t ask her. Today, she and Candy took the child out to have a walk, and they had a rest here when they felt tired. The scenery was beautiful here. She believed that Kahlil would like to stay here. The milk-white villa was shining vaguely in the sunshine. The birds were tweeting in the silent mountain once in a while. The dried leaves made a rattling sound when they stepped on them. Then they suddenly heard footsteps. Was someone here? Emerald carried the child and walked around the villa, and they saw Kahlil standing on the lawn in front of the villa, wearing a silver uniform. He just turned around and saw them, then he smiled with pleasure, and his face was lit up. “Why are you here?” He asked calmly. Emerald saw an all-metal machine man on the lawn ten meters away from them. That machine man would step onto the road in the woods with his back to them. Emerald squinted her eyes. The machine man’s body was shining under the evening sunshine. The light of the metal was like water, but the lineament of his body was straight and tough. “Wait.” Emerald was surprised when she said the word. Candy didn’t understand what happened, and Kahlil looked numb as if he had been punched in the face. That machine man pretended not to hear her and walked faster. He was going to disappear into the woods soon.“Mom, mom, I feel pain!” Yates suddenly frowned and cried in Emerald’s arms. “What happened, baby?” Emerald was surprised. She was amused and annoyed because Yates used the leaves that Candy gave him to tie his thumb and made himself suffer. Candy was also worried when Yates cried, and she rushed to check him out. Emerald untied the leaves and threw them on the ground, then she felt that someone was looking at her. She raised her head, and that machine man had come back and looked at them on the road. His eyesight was sharp and peaceful. Kahlil shouted loudly when he saw the boy start to laugh in Emerald’s arms, “It’s alright, the boy is really naughty. Emerald, take him into the room and wash his hands.” “I want uncle to carry me.” Yates felt happy when he saw Kahlil, and he struggled to crawl into Kahlil’s arms. Emerald gave the child to Kahlil, and when she turned around, she only saw the lush woods. The machine man had already left. “Who’s that? Who’s that machine man?” Emerald asked. Why did she feel so weird? “Well, that’s only one guard.” Kahlil said carelessly, “What’s wrong?” “Nothing.” Kahlil gave the child to Emerald, then he held Candy and pointed at her nose tip, “Is this a surprise attack? I thought you didn’t like it here because it’s too far.” **** Emerald didn’t talk about the accident on the day to her husband when she went back home at night, but Patrick was very excited tonight, and he made out with her till midnight. Emerald had a dream when she fell asleep. It was a simple but sad dream. She saw a pair of red eyes looking silently at her. She couldn’t see the face clearly, and the man didn’t say anything. He just stared at her. She could see the deep sorrow and pity in his eyes. She didn’t know who that was, but she realized that the man in her dream must be real after she woke up in tears. Otherwise, she wouldn’t feel so familiar. Patrick didn’t sleep at all. He immediately wiped her tears off with his fingers. “Did you have a nightmare?” He put his chin in her shoulder pit and held her tightly. Emerald didn’t know how to describe the dream. She saw the moonlight flowing on the window like water. She suddenly thought of the question that had been hidden in her heart for a long time. Why did she and Patrick come to this era? What secret was hidden in the gap of time?
