Chapter 67 Autodidact

After about five minutes, Christopher was starting to feel suffocated by the atmosphere in the room, so he bit the bullet and asked, “Um, Miss Soto, is there anything I should be aware of during the press conference later?” “Oh!” Maya seemed to have been startled when he spoke abruptly. Then, she continued, “No, you only need to answer some questions the reporters might ask you. There’s nothing you need to pay special attention to.” “I see!” He nodded. “Are you close to Chef Sparks, Miss Soto? I’ve never heard her mention you before.” Not wanting to let the atmosphere return to that awkward state, he continued to find topics to talk about. “Scarlett and I are childhood friends. Of course we’re close,” she answered. “She might not have brought me up in front of you, but she has brought you up in front of me many times. She even said…” Suddenly, a thought occurred to her, and she giggled with a hand over her mouth. What the hell is that supposed to mean? Why is she giggling? Did Scarlett talk bad about me behind my back and ruin my glorious and great image? Knowing Scarlett’s personality, he thought it was highly possible. “What did she say?” he asked on impulse.“She says you’re the only chef she has met who doesn’t look like a chef,” Maya answered with a smile. A chef who doesn’t look like a chef? He was slightly puzzled by that evaluation. While they were talking to each other, a tall, rich, and handsome man walked in from outside. The moment Christopher saw him, he became unsettled. Sh*t. Good lad, how are you so handsome? The man looked around 24 years old. He stood tall and upright, and had an unusual charisma about him. Wearing a dark gray suit and a luxurious Patek Philippe watch that was worth millions on his right wrist, he looked so much like those Korean male celebrities on television. His appearance, outfit, and temperament essentially trampled over Christopher from every direction. Presently, Christopher was unhappy. Young man, how can you be this perfect? As though he didn’t see Christopher, the young man walked straight to Maya and smiled at her. “Maya, it’s been a long time.” Maya also looked like she knew the tall, rich, and handsome man. Nodding at him, she said, “Yes! It’s been a while, Luke.” Luke? Christopher paused for a moment when he heard the name she called the man by. I feel like I’ve heard of this name before. “Oh, Luke.” A thought seemed to have occurred to her. “Let me introduce you to someone. He is the one who will be taking your place to guest star in ‘Glutton God’, Christopher Yard. His Culinary Skills are also extraordinary!” In the beginning, Maya wanted Luke to play this extremely important guest role because he fit the character in the movie perfectly, but he declined the invitation. After that, she managed to invite Christopher through Scarlett. “Is that so? I have to meet him and see how capable the lad is able to take on this role.” Luke smiled and shifted his gaze to Christopher. The moment he saw Christopher’s face, however, his expression changed. “You?” Quickly straightening out his expression, he looked at Christopher with a profound gaze. “What’s wrong? Do you know me, Mr. Luke?” Christopher asked as he couldn’t comprehend Luke’s current facial expression.“I do. Of course I do!” Luke smiled. “There was an uproar about you for a period of time. You were in the limelight when you got into the conflict with the owner of the French Le Cordon Bleu Medal. It’s not just me—I assume only a few chefs in Brentwood wouldn’t know who you are, Mr. Yard.” “You’re flattering me!” Christopher thanked him shamelessly with his hands pressed together. “It’s nice to meet you!” Stretching an arm out to Christopher, Luke continued, “I’m Luke Kelley, the head chef of Caesars Palace.” The head chef of Caesars Palace? When Luke introduced the title he held, Christopher put the pieces together in his mind. It was no wonder the name Luke sounded so familiar to him. This fellow was certified as the youngest five-star chef in the history of Brentwood City by the Madrila International Association of Chefs! It held the same weight as Hayden’s French Le Cordon Bleu Medal. The certification of a star chef by the Madrila International Association of Chefs was a form of accreditation for chefs. Compared to being accredited by the French Le Cordon Bleu Medal, however, the Madrila International Association of Chefs rating evaluation held more weight. With Hayden’s Culinary Skills, he could only attain three stars at most.In the vast Madrila with thirty-four districts and over tens of thousands of people working in the culinary profession, the number of people in each district who could be certified as a five-star chef by the Madrila International Association of Chefs was no more than a hundred. One might well imagine how valuable the title of five-star chef was. Getting evaluated as a five-star chef was not easy. More importantly, Luke was still so young. It was not hard to imagine that he could become a National Chef in the years to come. Moreover, apart from already having excellent Culinary Skills, he also had a first-class family background. He was from the Kelley Family of the South. Like the Sparks Family of the North, where Scarlett was from, his ancestors were part of The Four Royal Chefs of the 15th century. Even though a century had passed, and the Kelley Family’s influence in the culinary world could no longer compare to that of the Sparks Family of the South, which had Lawrence Sparks securing their spot, their sky-high position in history remained unchanged. In addition, the Kelley Family went with the flow of history and reformed themselves. They weren’t just a family skilled in culinary anymore; they had also slowly built their own business empire. From diners, restaurants, hotels, to even having logistics in electronic commerce, the Kelley Family was able to reach every corner of Madrila. As the eldest son in the direct line of the Kelley Family in the current generation, Luke had a value that need not be elaborated upon. In other words, he was like a real-life deity and a contemporary boss. Second-generation rich? Tall, rich, and handsome? That was Luke! Upon seeing Luke’s outstretched hand, Christopher shook it and said, “Nice to meet you, Chef Kelley.” “It’s rare to see Maya recommend someone.” Luke narrowed his eyes as he spoke. “If I get the chance, I must seek your advice in culinary, Mr. Yard.” “Oh, I’m certainly not qualified to advise you on anything, but I can give you some pointers,” Christopher replied shamelessly. “I heard you have four century-old Unique Cookware, Mr. Yard,” Luke mentioned. “Being able to have four of them at once is more precious to a chef than their own life. You have good fortune, Mr. Yard!” “Not at all!” Christopher waved his hands. “I wouldn’t dare to compare myself to you, Chef Kelley.” In Christopher’s eyes, Luke should also own a number of century-old Unique Cookware himself as the successor of the Kelley Family of the South, but he was wrong. It was not just the Kelley Family; the Sparks Family, who had much more history, did not possess many Unique Cookware that had been passed down. Century-old Unique Cookware were not items that any chef could possess. “Who did you train under, Mr. Yard?” Luke asked again. “Who did I train under?” Christopher hesitated for a moment to think about how to answer this question. “I’m an autodidact!”
