Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
His face tightened with anger, but he kept himself under control. "I'll blame your words on grief. You just lost your son. I won't hold it against you. Everyone here knows Caroline and her team are heroes of our shelter. Without them, do you really think you'd still be safe? Last time you ran into mutant flies, who made the antidote you used?" Nathaniel's voice was icy cold. "These are two different things! Commander Ball, you can't be confused!" Blake Roberts's voice shook, and he even started crying. Seeing him now, he really seemed like a loyal officer who cared too much about the army and acted recklessly. Caroline stepped forward, glanced at Nathaniel, and smiled faintly. "Commander Ball, I actually know a way to get everyone to tell the truth. "I just don't know if Lieutenant Colonel Roberts is brave enough to face what comes next." Blake straightened up and glared at Caroline. "What, are you trying to threaten me now? I've done nothing wrong. I'm not afraid of you." Caroline let out a cold, dismissive smile. Then she remembered where she'd seen that face. Not him, but his son. A few days ago, when Bernard sent people to attack them, one of the ability users was a tall young man in his twenties with a hooked nose. He looked a lot like Blake. After hearing what Nathaniel said, Caroline guessed that the man was Blake's son. Once she realized that, Caroline had basically put together the whole story from start to finish. Blake's son had worked under Bernard. Last time, he was sent to stop Caroline's group—and he died on that mission. Of course, Bernard wouldn't admit he sent his men because of a personal grudge. He told Nathaniel it was just a duty-related death. But somehow, Blake learned the truth about what Bernard had done and how his son really died. So when Caroline and her team came to the shelter this time, Blake killed Bernard, bribed the witnesses, and blamed Tyler for the murder.Thinking about this, Caroline narrowed her eyes at Blake. The scheme looked simple, but every piece had to fit perfectly. If even one part failed, the whole thing would fall apart. "What's wrong, Caroline? Surprised? Or are you out of excuses?" While Caroline was putting the story together, Blake sneered at her. His eyes burned with hatred. When he looked at Denton, it was so sharp it felt like he wanted to kill him just with his gaze. "That Tyler must've killed Colonel Hansen and ran away. Why else hasn't he shown up? Letting someone that dangerous in the base—Commander Ball, you're out of your mind!" He kept slandering, spitting out accusations. Denton and Francis stepped forward, warning Blake to watch what he said. Denton even got ready to use his ability. "I'm so mad I could explode!" Denton stomped his foot. If Caroline hadn't stopped him, he would've charged at Blake. There was no way he'd let Blake spread lies about Tyler. Francis had already rolled up his sleeves, ready to step in, but Nathaniel held him back. Nathaniel kept his face cold, his eyes fixed on Blake. Caroline could tell he had already figured Blake out. She looked at the middle-aged man in front of her, noticing the gray streaks in his hair. Losing a child had to hurt him deeply. But in the apocalypse, life-and-death battles were normal. His son had followed Bernard, gone out to attack Caroline's team over a personal grudge, and acted first without asking questions. He clearly wasn't an innocent or perfect person. Who knew what else he had done wrong before? Still, this was an army base. Caroline decided it was better to let Nathaniel handle it. The only thing Caroline could do was get these people to tell the truth. Just as she was about to take out the duck-head helmet from her storage space—a device that made anyone wearing it quack and spill the truth—she suddenly felt the entire base shake. Her first thought—another earthquake! But Crow had said there wouldn't be any more quakes this week! A rush of thoughts hit her all at once. Then she saw it—through the window, a big, furry leg was slowly moving.
