Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
Bernard had been here for days, and Francis made sure no one told him anything—basically isolating him on purpose. And now, look, it caused a huge problem! "Enough. No need to say anything else. Since you're not happy with my arrangements, go back to Commander Zimmer. Pack your things today; I'll have someone send you back." Bernard was dumbstruck, but he still saluted Nathaniel to show he'd obey. Thing is, he'd betrayed Andrew back then to stay with Nathaniel. Now that Nathaniel was sending him back ... his future was definitely going to be rough. He glanced at Caroline and the others with disgust. This is all their fault! Nathaniel is siding with them, that's why I got kicked out. And that Francis, too! The thought flashed through his mind. The fat guy lowered his head and forced a polite smile as he apologized to Caroline and the others, saying he hadn't realized who they were. Caroline and the others ignored him. This time, Nathaniel personally took Caroline and the group on a tour of the base, leaving Bernard alone. He clenched his fists, fury burning in his eyes. I'll find my chance... Once the tour ended, they politely declined Nathaniel's invitation for dinner and got ready to return to their mobile base. Caroline was impressed with the base, even feeling a bit of hope for humanity's future. "Commander Ball, you guys did a really great job." It's so much better than what I saw in my previous life. But she didn't say that out loud. Nathaniel just smiled and told them that if they ever needed anything, they should come to the base and find Francis, and he invited them to visit often. The army and Caroline's side would keep working together. Nathaniel also mentioned that the army had captured a mutant panda on the front lines. It wasn't dead. The army was raising it. Its abilities seemed pretty interesting, and he said he'd send it over to Caroline sometime.Caroline raised an eyebrow. There weren't wild pandas around here, only a couple in the zoo. This panda was probably one that had escaped from there. She might have even seen it at the zoo when she was a kid. Then, they left the base. Once they were in the car, Nelson said, "Colonel Hansen is going to cause trouble. He was hiding his anger and resentment pretty well just now, but his microexpressions can't fool me." Not long after the car started moving, they realized they were being followed. Tyler was driving. He glanced in the rearview mirror and said, "They just started following us. I'd say two cars." Two cars, ten people at most. "Denton and I can handle them. You guys go on ahead," Tyler said. Caroline nodded. She was more worried about Jet. That little guy was still soaking in the storage space. No idea if he'd got any better. Jet still hadn't grown any feathers this morning. Caroline figured that Nelson's hair growth probably wasn't just from soaking in the spring water—it needed the spring water plus acid rain. So early this morning, she gave Jet a soak with the spring water and acid rain combo, and made him keep drinking spring water. At a quiet spot, the two cars suddenly boxed their car in from the front and back. Tyler and Denton got out and attacked the vehicles from both sides. Caroline moved from the passenger seat to the driver's seat and kept driving. Two men jumped out, trying to chase Caroline's car, but Tyler's metallic thread whipped out and yanked them back. In an instant, the two men trying to pursue Caroline were sliced apart by Tyler's thread. Caroline glanced back. Bernard wasn't among them. That guy was sneaky. He'd only sent people to cause trouble to test their strength. There could be bigger moves later. As she drove, her mind raced. She would mention this to Francis later. If the army could deal with Bernard directly, she wouldn't intervene—after all, Bernard was a government official. But if the punishment wasn't enough and Bernard came after them again... The next time she ran into him, he wouldn't walk away. With her thoughts sorted, Caroline drove faster. Nelson sat in the back, staring out the window, lost in thought. Caroline asked, "What's on your mind?" Nelson looked at the road outside, which was so hot it almost seemed to be smoking under the sun, and muttered, "Caroline, I think an earthquake's coming."
