Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
"And Human, I even saw a whole pile of mutant maggots wriggling in the trash. I didn't peck a single one because I was afraid you and Raven would be grossed out. "And oh, oh, mutant mosquitoes. A whole swarm chased me! They were so annoying. But I flew fast and lost them, hehe." Caroline pulled out a full bag of bird feed and handed it to Jet, but it still didn't stop his nonstop chatter. In the end, Raven swatted him flat with one paw before Jet finally quieted down in wounded silence. Caroline rubbed Jet's tiny head and flicked the tuft on top. "Jet did great today." Jet snapped his head up, his big round eyes sparkling. "Human, I'm gonna be a powerful scout bird!" Raven pushed a chunk of meat from his own bowl toward Jet, like offering encouragement. Jet almost burst into tears as he devoured it. Eat more, fly faster. Become a scout as strong as Silver! Caroline pulled out a tomato and egg rice bowl, a bottle of kvass, and a few hot skewers. Since awakening her ability, her appetite had grown, especially her craving for meat after using powers. Tyler and the others all had the same issue. Which meant Raven and Jet had to be extra careful. To some ability users, they would look like nothing but moving meals. After resting in the storage space for a few hours, Caroline opened her eyes again. It was already two thirty in the morning. Caroline figured most scavengers would have already headed home by this hour, making it safer than right after sunset. So she grabbed Raven and Jet and headed back out. Before Jet took off, she reminded him again to be extremely careful. "This time shrink your scouting range. No more than 80 yards. You can be slower, but pay attention to everything." Jet puffed out his chest. "Human, my night vision is amazing now. Don't worry." Caroline still felt uneasy. In many people's eyes, Jet wasn't a bird—he was a walking roast chicken. But she knew she couldn't shelter him forever. Jet needed to grow. And Jet had an ability of his own. As long as he wasn't farther than about 80 yards, any flare of his power would be loud enough for Raven to hear. With Raven's speed, he could cover 50 yards in just a few seconds and reach Jet in time. But what Caroline didn't expect was Jet had been gone for five minutes and still hadn't returned. Caroline felt a shift in her gut. "Raven. Find Jet." Raven lifted his nose and sniffed hard in the air, like he was trying to catch Jet's scent. A few seconds later, he suddenly bolted in one direction. Caroline frowned. That wasn't the direction Jet had flown off in. After they sprinted about 40 yards, a round, chubby bird came rushing straight toward her. It was Jet. Jet's eyes were full of panic. He looked like he wanted to speak when he saw Caroline, but he held it back. Instead, he chirped something quick to Raven midair. Raven instantly spun around and dashed the opposite way. Caroline understood at once. Someone was chasing them from behind. Under Jet's lead, Raven carried Caroline for almost 30 yards and slipped into an abandoned building. About a minute after they hid inside, voices came from outside. "Where did it go? It was right here a second ago." "A bird that fat? First time I've seen one after the apocalypse. If we offer it to the leader, she'll give us holy water for sure." "Split up. We must find that fat bird. With holy water, we won't have to worry about drinking for the next month." "We agreed earlier. Whoever gets the holy water, we all share it." "Yeah. Once we catch the bird, we butcher it on the spot. Give the wings, legs, and breast meat to the leader, and each of us gets a share of holy water." "Hahaha, smart. Let's do it."The group scattered, searching the area. Caroline rubbed her chin. This "leader" and "holy water" sounded a lot more interesting than she expected. It seemed that ever since people awakened abilities, new strange groups had started forming everywhere. And from what those men said, drinking holy water meant you didn't need water for an entire month. That was definitely an ability she wanted.
