Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
Caroline figured it was about time to take that car and head out for their new place. She knew Shane was a total mess. Half the time, he didn't even know what he was doing. If he came looking for their route through the army, he wouldn't find a thing. The army was about to move too. That meant he'd have to start asking random groups and civilians nearby. And honestly, if he dropped names like Nelson or Caroline, hardly anyone would even know who he meant. If he really wanted to track them down, he'd probably have to describe a black dog, a white wolf, and a giant tree. So, riding Raven and the others across long distances wasn't a great idea. From now on, they'd need to travel mostly at night. Keeping things quiet for a while was the best move. That car was perfect for their escape. Still, Caroline made sure to remind both the young soldier and Francis not to mention to anyone that it was being handed over to them. Later, when people saw the army using that same car, everyone would assume the weird-looking vehicle that left the base belonged to the military. It'd be a pretty solid cover—at least for a while. As for Shane, Caroline had a feeling he'd pop up again eventually. After inspecting the car, she went upstairs to say her goodbyes to Francis and Nathaniel. The moment Francis heard she was leaving, he rounded up every young guy in the shelter, lined them up, and told Caroline to copy their abilities. Soon, it was just like before—a bunch of excited guys yelling for Caroline to come touch them. This time, a few of Nathaniel's ability users joined too. Nathaniel even laughed and joined in himself. "Caroline, want mine? It's not very useful, but it's fun." Caroline tilted her head, curious. What kind of ability did Nathaniel even have? As soon as she nodded, he grabbed her hand and pulled her into a nearby room, like he didn't want anyone else watching. He rubbed his palms together, looking a little shy, a faint blush coloring his cheeks. Caroline knew some abilities were awkward to show, so she politely turned away, giving him a bit of space. From the corner of her eye, she saw him rubbing his hands a few more times before pressing his palms together and framing his face, like a kid pretending to be a flower. She thought she heard him mumble something, but he was standing too far for her to catch the words clearly. All she caught was "I" and "flower." Then, he lifted his hands to his lips and softly blew. And then, something amazing happened. Right under Caroline's feet, flowers started blooming all over the bare stone floor. In the air, colorful petals spun and twirled like a rainbow storm. The blossoms spread out from where Nathaniel was standing, covering the whole room in a wave of color. And the ones floating in the air? Those came straight from his hands. Basically, after a few movements, he blew into his palms, and a whirlwind of flowers exploded out. Since the apocalypse, Caroline hadn't seen real flowers. Even in her storage space, she never bothered to grow anything just for decoration. But flowers had their own kind of charm. They made people feel lighter inside. Surrounded by all those bright petals, the sweet scent wrapped around her. Standing there in the colorful glow, she felt oddly calm, warm, and safe. The funniest part? A single flower popped up on Nathaniel's head. He was an old man now, hair white and cut short for convenience. And right in that pale fuzz, a bright red flower had bloomed—fresh, lively, and stunning. A gentle breeze came through the window, spreading the fragrance and making that red flower sway.Nathaniel's face stayed a little pink, but he tried to keep a straight face. He glanced at Caroline, pretending to be serious. "That's my ability. I can make flowers bloom. It doesn't make me stronger or help in fights. It just ... makes flowers." Trying to lighten the moment, he let out a sigh. "Go ahead and laugh if you want. When Francis saw it for the first time, he nearly laughed himself to death. He even asked how I ended up with such a girly ability."
