Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
Many of Nathaniel's soldiers were in tears. They could not help but think of the four words—"the final flicker of life." Their commander, who had never taken a single thing from the people before the apocalypse, had always worked diligently for the country! Even past seventy, he remained on the front lines. After the apocalypse, Nathaniel had commanded multiple shelters alone, enforcing justice, devising a series of survival plans, and leading Hornvale's officials and citizens through disaster after disaster. And now, they watched him wither, powerless to help. After finishing his steamed egg, Nathaniel insisted on coming to see Francis himself. Those who knew them well understood that while Nathaniel and Francis had a superior-subordinate relationship, it was more like father and son. This made everyone fear the worst even more. Some suggested calling Francis to come over, but Nathaniel insisted on going himself. "I won't die in this hut. I want to go among my people—in the shelter." So Nathaniel's soldiers brought him to the shelter. When Nathaniel saw Francis, he even asked him to demonstrate his awakened powers, his cloudy eyes showing a trace of pride, "Not bad, not bad. You're truly my protégé." Then, Nathaniel smiled before losing consciousness. For a moment, chaos erupted in Francis's office. The iron-willed man could not help but shed tears. Then he shouted with all his might, the loudest he ever had, "Quick! Get Caroline and Nelson! Call the doctors! Bring all the healing-type ability users to the shelter here! "Whoever can save Nathaniel, my life will forever belong to them!" Caroline had barely settled down when she was awakened. Since the entire sixty-sixth floor was resting, Caroline and the others had turned off the walkie-talkie on the sixty-fourth floor. The soldiers below had shouted into it for ages with no response.Time was urgent. They picked a soldier with a special ability—someone who could stick his hands and feet to walls—and sent him out the window on the sixty-fourth-floor corridor. He climbed up to the sixty-sixth floor and tapped on Caroline's bedroom window. Hearing the noise, Caroline tensed and drew her knife. Raven's calm reaction told her the visitor was someone familiar and harmless. Still, Caroline did not put her knife away. She carefully drew back the curtain and saw someone clinging to the window like a spider, hands and feet spread, face pressed to the glass, calling for her. Even Caroline, who had seen countless scenes in her life, was startled. Upon closer inspection, she recognized the soldier under Francis's command and asked what had happened. After the explanation, Caroline's brow furrowed. If Nathaniel died, the military would face massive upheaval. Though she had kept some distance from the military, recent collaborations with Francis's team had made many view her as tied to them, like people who were in it together. Which meant she was also in together with Nathaniel. With the incident that had destroyed the Lowlands, she had also angered factions allied to them. Nathaniel's death would not just put her at risk of plots or revenge, it would force many of her plans to be redrawn. Caroline was not afraid, especially now that the mobile base could be deployed. Still, she wanted fewer complications. And she knew Nathaniel was a genuinely good man. "Wait downstairs. I'll be right there," she said to the soldier on the window. The soldier used his hands and feet to descend swiftly. Caroline hurriedly dressed and prepared to go downstairs to find Nelson. When it came to saving people, he had experience. But to Caroline's surprise, Nelson was still unconscious! He had spent the day conducting countless experiments, pushing the spring water to its limits. Caroline gently tapped Nelson's face, still immersed in his bath. "Nelson, wake up." No response. He continued to sleep soundly, face flushed, eyes twitching as if he were in a beautiful dream. It was clear Nelson was still purging impurities from his body, just like when Caroline first used the spring water.
