Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
When Nelson found out Caroline was here to tell him she was leaving, he pointed at Shane and said, "Then, I'll play with him for a couple of days, collect some samples, and then let him go." Hearing that, Caroline felt relieved. She also gave Nelson the tube of Shane's blood she had drawn when he was injured, so he could compare it to Shane's normal blood and see if there was any difference when Shane used that terrifying ability. After that, Caroline explained why she was here—spring water. "I've never let anyone study this before. I've done some simple tests myself and didn't find anything weird in it. It's just like normal water." When Nelson heard that Caroline planned to let Tyler, Denton, and himself use the spring water, he got excited and ran up to the 66th floor to draw some blood from them first. "We need before-and-after comparisons to get proper experimental results." Caroline nodded, reached out to ruffle Nelson's head—yep, still bald. Nelson's abilities were strong, but for some reason, his hair never grew back. Even after all these days, his head was still shiny and bald, making people wonder if he'd ever get hair again. "Then I'll leave it to you," Caroline said with a smile. Yep, a bald head feels surprisingly nice to touch. The reason she wanted Nelson to study the spring water was that she had a feeling her storage space and human abilities were connected to this apocalypse somehow. Especially after seeing Shane's insane powers. Then there was that line she saw when using Crow's ability, from her storage space system. "His existence is to remind Caroline that no matter how many abilities you've copied, there's always someone stronger." It seemed like just the system's usual snarky comment. But Caroline read something else between the lines—a sense of balance. Her abilities and storage space were powerful, but whether it was nature or some other force, it seemed that along with creating these powers came limits and restraints. Nothing was allowed absolute dominance. Be too strong, and you'd get a "reminder."Even if Nelson couldn't figure out the spring water's secrets right away, maybe someday he would. Caroline would also keep looking for more clues to test her ideas. After saying goodbye to Nelson, Caroline called Raven and had Jet stay behind to guard the place. These days, Jet didn't whine about staying home, because Silver was staying too! "Human, don't worry! I'll keep watch!" Jet puffed out his chest and flapped his wings, but his eyes kept darting to Silver down the hall. Now Silver and Jet patrolled the entire 66th floor together. Caroline rubbed Jet on the head, then tapped Raven on the big butt. "Raven, let's go." Downstairs, she mounted Raven and they shot off like lightning. But they hadn't gone far when they were blocked by a mountain of trash, stinking like crazy. Bodies and garbage were piled together, with swarms of small mutant flies and mutant cockroaches buzzing and crawling all over it. The weird part? The trash mountain was moving. Caroline froze, instantly on alert. Even Raven arched his back and barked loudly at the shifting pile. She'd never seen trash move on its own. As she was figuring out what to do next, a clear, loud voice came from behind the trash heap. "Stop!" The voice sounded familiar. Caroline frowned and thought for a moment, then quickly realized who the voice belonged to—Haroldson, whom she hadn't seen in ages! She was right. A moment later, a tall boy in a military uniform appeared behind the trash mountain. Standing on higher ground, he shouted through a megaphone, "Army clearing the streets. Please detour. Army clearing the streets. Please detour." Caroline quickly shouted, "Haroldson! Haroldson!"She waved her arms energetically. Hearing her, Haroldson noticed Caroline down below. His voice lifted with excitement. "Caroline! Fancy meeting you here!" Caroline didn't expect to run into Haroldson in a situation like this. When Haroldson saw how big Raven had gotten, he was thrilled. He didn't have any treats on him this time, so he just hugged Raven's neck and kept saying how amazing he was, and how cool it was that he had abilities now.
