Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 400 I Don't Need This

In the apocalypse, it wasn't just the animals that died out in huge numbers—plants did, too. Fortunately, Handsy and Medusa, two special mutant plants, had found each other for company in this ruined world. But to anyone else, this bizarre and magical scene was completely beyond what normal people could comprehend. Over in Building B, a man had been watching the two trees for a long time. He stroked his chin, a crazed glint in his eyes. "Interesting. I'm taking those trees with me." And with that, he simply vanished! It was as if he'd suddenly materialized on the roof of Building A. Meanwhile, Caroline and Tyler went to check on Denton. Denton was already in isolation, sitting around in his protective gear, looking bored out of his mind. The Elephant Brand back scratcher was a lifesaver—it kept him from scratching himself bloody. Still worried, Caroline took out a cup of warm water, mixed it with a little healing spring water, and handed it to Denton to drink. Lately, Caroline had been considering giving healing spring water to Denton, Tyler, even Snow, Silver, and Handsy to improve their health. But most importantly, she wanted to give it to Nelson, since his ability kept him from raising his stamina. Still, Caroline remembered how the first time she drank a lot of healing spring water, she passed out for quite a while, so she figured she'd need to wait for a safe time before letting anyone try a larger dose. For now, she only ever gave them warm water with a drop or two of healing spring water. It wouldn't do much, but it wouldn't hurt them, either. Denton downed it in one gulp. According to him, he felt a lot more refreshed after drinking the water. Even though Denton was in protective gear, Caroline and Tyler both suited up, too, but they still kept their distance from him. Caroline and Tyler waited outside the lab for now. From inside, they could sometimes hear Nelson's gleeful chuckle, along with the agonized cries and begging of the men. It was impossible to know what was going on. At that moment, a knock sounded at the door to the 64th floor. Caroline went to answer it and was surprised to find Alger there. Alger's forehead was beaded with sweat. He hadn't caught the disease yet, but he'd come up to deliver a message. "Caroline, there's a plague in our shelter! One third of the people are sick ... " Caroline cut him off before he could finish. "Don't worry, we already know. Denton's been infected, and Nelson's working on a cure right now." Alger was stunned. He hadn't expected Caroline's team to be ahead of things, or that they'd already started making medicine. He was so relieved, given how desperate things had gotten in the shelter. He remembered Francis's serious, urgent instructions. The plague now was even scarier than when the mutant Steelworm attacked days ago. Who'd have guessed that while everyone else was panicking, the people on the 66th floor had already taken charge? "Caroline, I'll cut to the chase. I can't promise any big reward, but the Colonel will definitely thank you in person later. In the meantime, you can pick any soldier in the shelter. Even if you wake us up at midnight, we'll come running. Caroline, do you need anything now? Want me to help you relax and recharge? Should I wait for you ... in your bedroom?" Alger's eyes sparkled as he spoke, and he started pulling off his T-shirt as he continued. Caroline was stunned by his suggestive words and hurriedly stopped him. She didn't want him to get the wrong idea. "I don't need this. Go take care of your business!" Alger left in high spirits, ready to give his report. Before leaving, he made sure to agree with Caroline that the moment Nelson finished his research, they'd send the medicine down right away. Caroline asked about conditions downstairs and learned that Summer had distributed her medicine. People weren't itching anymore and were starting to recover, just like Denton. Now, all they could do was wait for Nelson's new medicine. Caroline nodded, finally able to relax a little, and went back to waiting outside of Nelson's lab. Alger took the elevator from the 64th floor to the 40th, ready to relay the good news to Francis. But after he got off at the 40th floor, the elevator kept going ...A little while later, it came back up again. Inside the shelter, everyone was so busy that nobody noticed the elevator running up and down on its own. No one noticed that it was completely empty inside. It stopped again at the 64th floor.
