Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
Dwayne decided he couldn't die here. Not like this. So when he heard that woman asking for someone named Nelson, he made up his mind. If he could grab Nelson, maybe he'd have a chance to live. He discovered two other men who had the same idea when he got to the 64th floor. Those two stood at the stairwell entrance, hesitating to make their moves. Dwayne clenched his teeth, then blasted the metal door open with fire. "We don't have any other choice, do we?" That move lit a spark in the others. The other two looked at each other and charged upward together. But they didn't expect what was waiting. A black dog blocked their way. When one of them raised his hand to attack, Dwayne stopped him. He forced a smile at the dog in front of him. "Hey, you're Raven, right? Caroline sent us. We're here to take over your job and protect Nelson." Raven's ice-blue eyes stayed locked on him. He didn't believe a word of it. Sweat rolled down Dwayne's forehead. He knew how dangerous this dog was. He had once seen Caroline talking to her pets and learned something about them. Dwayne decided to gamble. "I know about your friend Jet. Caroline said you should go upstairs and ask Jet to come down. You've probably heard someone downstairs wants to hurt Nelson. Nelson's a top-priority target now. She's worried you can't protect him alone, so she told you to get Jet." Still, Raven didn't move. He stood like a guardian statue, brows narrowed, thinking. Dwayne pressed, "Caroline said Jet only trusts you. If we go up, he won't believe us. That's why she sent you. I swear we're telling the truth." Raven didn't budge. Caroline hadn't shown up in person. He only took orders from her. Without her command, he wouldn't move an inch. Then one of the men lost patience. He stretched out his hand and shot a vine toward Raven. At the same time, a steelworm lunged from the hallway. Raven turned to face the bug and missed the vine whipping toward him. Wham! The vine wrapped around Raven's hind leg and slammed him to the ground. "Haha! Got him!" The man who ambushed Raven with the vine laughed. "Go grab that Nelson guy!" Dwayne gave him a thumbs-up and ran straight for the lab. Raven wasn't done. Furious, he shrank his body to slip free from the vine. He darted toward the man who had attacked him. By then, Dwayne had already dashed into the lab. Inside, Nelson stood over his workbench, eyes bright with excitement. He held up a vial of yellow liquid and shouted, "Haha! I did it! Turns out these steelworms are scared of this stuff! You're done for now, you nasty bugs!" Dwayne lunged forward and grabbed Nelson without a word. "Who are you? What do you want?" Nelson clutched the vial in his hand like it was a treasure. "Cut the crap! You're coming with us!" Dwayne punched a fist into Nelson's face. Nelson lost his grip on the bottle. It hit the floor and shattered. With a loud bang, yellow liquid spilled across the ground. Dwayne had no idea what he'd just smashed. For a moment, Nelson froze. His mind was blank, like it had shut down. He couldn't think straight. Nelson was purely furious. Dwayne looked at Nelson, weak and stunned, and sneered inside. What a fool! Why are so many people fighting over this man? He dragged Nelson toward the exit and missed the change in Nelson's eyes. Darkness rolled in. A whirlwind of snow and wind churned inside them."Arghhh!" Dwayne yelled as something slammed into the back of his head. He turned just in time to see another blow coming at his forehead. The force stunned him. Nelson was holding a microscope—then he swung it like a hammer. He looked as if he had no idea what he was doing, just wildly smashing at Dwayne. Dwayne tried to block a few blows, but he couldn't hold them off. Nelson was in a frenzy. There was nothing in his eyes. A voice was circulated in his head. Kill him! Kill him! Kill him! Dwayne struggled, but he failed to break free. Then, in a sudden move, he raised his hand. Flames leapt out and licked at Nelson's clothes. He could tell the man had gone insane. Dwayne decided he had to wake him up. If burning him would do it, then he'd burn him.
