Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
When Caroline heard that Handsy would reach the rooftop by nightfall, she finally breathed a sigh of relief. Otherwise, nobody in the building would have gotten any sleep tonight. No one wanted to look up and see a giant five-fingered leaf sliding past their window. That would be a sight straight out of a horror movie. Caroline quickly shook that out of her mind—there was no point dwelling on it. It was better to focus on real work. "Someone will help you move your things upstairs later. Let me show you to the lab on the 65th floor first," Caroline said to Nelson. "And I'll introduce you to my other two friends as well." Nelson and Caroline headed upstairs together. Neither of them realized that over in Building B, a pair of eyes had just witnessed everything that happened. Those eyes belonged to Crow, the leader of Obsidian Fang. Crow was holding binoculars and had clearly seen Nelson's face, as well as the tree climbing the building. His expression grew darker and darker. "Why is the plot so different this time around? Why is Nelson even here?" Like Caroline, Crow had been reborn. He had been reborn with a purpose. Last time, his Obsidian Fang hadn't survived even three years after the apocalypse. Crow had watched his men die one by one, powerless to help. It happened because they'd angered a powerful group of ability users. To make it even more ridiculous, he didn't die in some disaster but from cancer. He never imagined he'd get another shot at life. So from the day he came back, he started planning—he would find a safe place, build his own empire, recruit as many strong people as possible, and make Obsidian Fang powerful. Most importantly, he would get his revenge. And ... he wanted to find a cure for his cancer.Building his empire and gathering strong followers was something he'd been working on constantly. Learning from his past mistakes, he kept a low profile this time around. He quietly grew stronger and even made a point to maintain good relations with the army. All of it was to survive longer. He even realized he didn't need to go head-to-head with the army to build his own power. Lying low and going with the flow was the best way. As for his cancer ... Two names came to mind. One was the army's "Dr. Sinclair," and the other was Nelson. Dr. Sinclair was a friend of Francis, famous for her medical skills. She hadn't originally been with the army, but after curing all kinds of rare conditions, she became well-known. Her abilities even let her perform surgeries that would have been impossible before the apocalypse. So when Crow heard the army had set up a shelter here and that Francis was in charge, he had people watching everyone with the surname Sinclair. He always assumed Caroline was Dr. Sinclair, which was why he'd wanted to meet her before—he wanted to test things out. But after talking to Caroline, he kept thinking she didn't seem like a real doctor, which really confused him. Nelson, on the other hand, was famous, but his past was a mystery. Crow only knew Nelson had worked with the army, but nobody knew when that had started. That was why Crow worked so hard to keep on the army's good side. He really needed their help. He never expected Nelson to show up here—let alone be hanging around with Caroline. "Caroline Sinclair ... " Crow frowned and rubbed his brow hard. He just couldn't remember ever hearing about someone like Caroline in his previous life. She seemed like a capable person, hanging around with Tyler, Francis, and even Nelson, but there hadn't been a whisper about her before. The thought sent Crow running to get Lisa.Meanwhile, Caroline brought Nelson up to the 65th floor and showed him the lab. Nelson walked a circuit, seemed basically satisfied, and immediately began planning where to put his research equipment. Caroline suddenly remembered the vial of blue liquid she'd gotten from Building B. Part of it had already been absorbed by her storage space, but she'd kept some for research. "I ran this stuff through the machine, but I couldn't identify it. Can you give it a shot?" she asked. Nelson's eyes locked onto the blue liquid the moment he saw it. He held it up, studied it, and even sniffed it. Before Caroline could stop him, he poured some onto his tongue. Caroline was stunned—is he really that crazy? He's just going to taste it with his tongue? But Nelson had already licked it and looked at Caroline. "There's some kind of enzyme in here, but I've never tasted anything like it. I'll need some time to analyze it."
