Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse
Time was tight after Caroline brought Raven inside, so she didn't waste a moment. She grabbed every stone she could find and stashed them in her storage space. A few of the stones caused the storage space to tremble, but the vibrations weren't anything significant. Caroline didn't have time to check the upgrades. She quickly led Raven and Jet out to meet up with Tyler's group at the mall. But when Caroline got there, she realized Denton and Tyler weren't at the agreed spot. The mall had seven floors in total, but thanks to the high elevation, only five were buried by snow. Everyone had agreed to smash a window on the east side and meet up there. But when Caroline arrived, all she saw was the shattered glass. Tyler and Denton were nowhere to be found. While she was puzzling over it, Silver came fluttering over, squawking up a storm. Jet rushed over and chatted with Silver for a bit, then turned to Caroline. "Hey, Human, follow Silver! The other two humans seem to have found something good!" Caroline followed Silver. They took two turns and walked less than a hundred feet before coming upon what looked like a white prefab cabin parked in the center of the mall. It sat right out in the open, and Denton and Tyler were circling it. When Caroline showed up, Tyler waved her over. "Check this out." Caroline walked around it twice, eyes lighting up. "Wait, is this a liquid-ammonia freezer? And it's portable?" This thing was basically a mini cold room. It could chill items quickly and maintain a stable temperature. Best of all, it was small enough to move, which meant it could fit into a storage space. "Caroline, when we first got here, we were waiting for you. But then this mutant snake showed up. After fighting it for what felt like ages, we spotted this. Tyler got all excited. He said the cooling ability of this thing is next-level," Denton grinned. That wasn't the only useful thing around. Turns out, they were in a hypermarket. Next to the freezer were UV-sterilized water tanks, high-capacity batteries, ice makers, a few dishwashers, and a bunch of other gadgets. Since Denton and Tyler had found the freezer, Caroline let Tyler take it. They split the rest of the loot between them. Denton was hugging a dishwasher like his life depended on it. "Caroline, you don't get it. Tyler always makes me wash the dishes. I'm sick of it ... ah!" Before he could finish, Tyler flicked him on the head. He just shot Denton a look. "You're hopeless." Caroline found the whole thing hilarious. She'd never had a dishwasher at home. She either used disposables or washed everything by hand. But now, she started thinking maybe she should get one, too—though she ultimately decided against it. Right now, it just wasn't possible to dump used household water down the drain, so whenever the dishwasher finished a cycle, they had to deal with both the wastewater and the clean water hooked up to it. Everything took extra effort to set up. That wasn't a problem for Tyler and Denton, though, thanks to their home setup. According to Denton, Tyler had rigged up two big tanks—one for clean water, the other for wastewater. The dirty tank was emptied every so often, and the clean tank was refilled regularly, with a filter added for extra safety. That was already pretty fancy for the apocalypse. Caroline didn't bother—she had her JunkEater. The batteries in the hypermarket were all high-capacity. They all had their own generators, but still took a couple of extras. After all, in an apocalypse like this, there was no such thing as too many backup generators. They also picked up a few ice makers, which would come in handy once the weather warmed up. After gathering all that, they scoured the mall one last time for any remaining useful supplies. They found some short-sleeve shirts and sun protection gear, so they grabbed their sizes. Eventually, they found the mall's storage room. The storage room had been ransacked, too.But inside, they spotted a bunch of degrading solutions. Small white bottles with blue labels were just sitting there on the shelves, completely ignored. Seeing that, Tyler, Denton, and even Caroline couldn't help grinning. "Caroline, check it out. Degrading solutions!" Denton called out. As the name suggests, a degrading solution breaks down waste and helps eliminate bad smells. It's pretty standard in RVs. Now, in front of them were two big racks full of the solution! Just as they'd guessed, the mall had been stripped bare of food and drinks—not even things like dog food, cat food, or windshield washer fluid had been left behind.
