Upgradable Space: Reborn to Survive the Apocalypse

Chapter 323 Crow

Meanwhile, Tyler and Denton had their plan all set. Both were suited up in flight suits as they made their move into Building B. Even though everyone thought they'd left, Tyler quietly broke a window and slipped inside without making a sound. The real investigation in Building B was only just getting started. ... Back in Building A, the tension was thick, like a powder keg ready to blow. Caroline and Francis stood side by side, four soldiers behind them, rifles aimed straight ahead. Obsidian Fang's boss sat in a chair while Lisa and two bodyguards also had their guns raised, ready for anything. Both sides were squared off, waiting for the first move. "I came here with good intentions," Obsidian Fang's boss said, waving slightly. His people lowered their weapons first. Francis stayed stern, but he also motioned for his soldiers to ease up, too, though their grips stayed tight, clearly still on alert. Obsidian Fang's boss, Crow, was over 70, but he moved and acted like a man in his 60s—sharp, energetic, and alert. Caroline had noticed before that his right leg was badly deformed, twisted from years of chronic pain, making every step feel like stabbing needles. Before the apocalypse, it could've been treated. But now? It was a real problem. Representing the army, Francis needed answers, especially about how Crow seemed to know things before they happened. No one expected him to say, "You all know animals have abilities now. Humans are animals too. I, for example, can see the future." Caroline didn't believe it at first. But then, he predicted the next soldier to walk in would slip and fall, and that was exactly what happened. Francis was stunned and started asking about human abilities in more detail. For anyone hearing for the first time that humans could develop abilities, it was a shock.Caroline looked just as surprised, but she rolled her eyes internally. What a load of crap. Someone had spilled water, and it was freezing outside. Slip hazards were natural. Francis, clever as ever, played along. She wasn't sure if he really didn't notice or was just pretending to get more info. Still, claiming to see the future also worked as a neat cover for anyone who'd come back to life. Then, Crow grinned at Francis. "I also know your shelter will be destroyed in a few days, and the ones behind it will be us." Both sides tensed again, guns raised in an instant. But after cooling things down, Crow smiled. "Knowing the future doesn't mean it has to happen. It can all be an illusion. Relax, Colonel Sutton. Let's talk about working together." This old guy is real slick! Caroline didn't care much for the negotiations, or maybe she'd just realized she couldn't get too involved with the army. Working together was fine, but she couldn't let anyone think they were on the same side. She left two medicated patches behind. It was mainly to take advantage of a good deal rather than waste it. The patches wouldn't cure, just help a little. By trading them, they actually became useful. Plus, it made Obsidian Fang a bit cautious around her. If she acted like a top-tier doctor, at least no one would take her lightly. Everyone got sick or aged eventually, especially Obsidian Fang's boss, who was definitely not young anymore. Before leaving, Caroline said, "Mr. Crow, I'm not a specialist. These patches won't cure you—just ease things a little. There aren't enough ingredients to make more right now, so you might want to find another expert." Three patches were enough. If they worked too perfectly, it would look suspicious, so leaving a few symptoms made the medicine seem realistic, effective, but ordinary. She'd already run molecular tests on all her items from the storage space. The machines said they were no different from regular products—same ingredients, nothing strange or untraceable. Yet somehow, they worked better than anything else. She didn't know why, so she wasn't worried about Crow analyzing the patches. And what did she get in return? Caroline didn't need supplies. She only wanted Obsidian Fang to promise two things for her in the future. When she got home, Denton was standing in the hallway with binoculars, peering toward Building B.
