Stronger Every Time I Die
Arthur quickly let go of Ashley and looked at her. Her expression was calm. She asked, “Arthur, I won’t be able to walk again, will I?” Arthur’s heart clenched tight. His first instinct was to shake his head, but he couldn’t bring himself to do it. From his reaction alone, Ashley already understood the truth. She blinked her big eyes and forced a small smile. “At least we’re both still alive, right?” Everyone froze. When they turned around and saw Ashley trying to smile through the pain, they couldn’t hold back any longer. They all turned away again, tears streaming silently down their faces. None of them dared to cry out loud, afraid of causing Ashley even more distress. Arthur stared at her, searching her eyes for a sign of what she was really feeling. But Ashley took his hand first, looking at him seriously. “If I had to trade my legs for your life, I think it was worth it.” She paused for a moment before adding, “You don’t need to feel guilty. I chose this. Just like when we were at Heaven Island, and you punched President Holland’s people to keep me from being humiliated, even though you were risking everything.” Arthur looked at her optimistic face, but he couldn’t feel even a hint of joy. The more she tried to comfort him, the more understanding she was, the more it broke his heart. How could he not know how crushed and devastated she really felt deep down? And yet, she forced herself to smile just to ease his guilt. Arthur held her hands tightly and buried his face in them, his shoulders shaking as he choked on his sobs. His foolish, brave girl... Ashley gently stroked his head, her expression distant and dazed. That night. Ashley finally fell asleep, and after several exhausting days, the others left to get some rest. Arthur quietly stepped out of the room and closed the door behind him. Up on the rooftop. He looked out at the distant scatter of city lights. Wind stood respectfully behind him. Arthur spoke in a low voice. “Tell me. Who were the two people who shot Ashley and Taylor?” Wind had already guessed Arthur would ask. After a moment of hesitation, he answered respectfully, “It was…” He trailed off. Even he had trouble saying it. He had been shocked too. How could it have been them? Arthur’s face was expressionless. “Say it. The truth.” Wind no longer dared to hold anything back. He lowered his head. “It was… your biological mother, Raelynn. And your sister, Susie.” The rooftop fell into a suffocating silence. Arthur let out a dry, bitter laugh. “Ha.” Even in this second life, they still wanted him dead. And even earlier than last time. He closed his eyes for a long moment. When he opened them again, they were filled with nothing but cold, deadly resolve. “Let’s go. I’m going to end this with my own hands.” Raelynn. Susie. Renee. Anyone who dared to hurt the people he loved… he would not let a single one of them go. He felt nothing for Raelynn and Susie. Not a trace of emotion. And Renee…Arthur had been waiting a long time to take revenge on her. At the prison. Thanks to Arthur’s identity, getting inside was simple. The guards even arranged a private visitation room for them. On the way in, Arthur ran into Sun Zheng, who had come for a visit. He brought him along. The room was large. Arthur entered first, followed by Wind and Sun Zheng. Before long, Renee, Raelynn, and Susie were escorted in. All three had been changed into standard prison uniforms, shackles around both their wrists and ankles. The moment they saw Arthur, they grew visibly agitated. Renee was the first to explode. “Arthur!! Why aren’t you dead yet?! Where did you take Ziye?! How could you do something so vile and inhuman?!” Before she could finish, Susie and Raelynn shrieked in unison. “Arthur!! I should’ve strangled you the moment you were born! You’ve ruined us! Our whole family is destroyed, and now you want to take away our last hope too?! You’re not even human!” “Arthur! How can someone like you be my brother?! You keep coming after us! Isn’t it enough?! Haven’t you ruined us enough?!” Susie looked completely unhinged. “You just can’t stand to see us live well, can you?! The moment we finally found someone to rely on, the moment our lives started to stabilize, you came and tore it all down! You monster!!” Arthur stood silently and watched them scream and curse. Wind made several attempts to step forward, but Arthur stopped him every time. He waited until the three of them had finished venting, and only then did he finally speak. “Tell me. Who gave you those guns?” That was the only thing he came here to find out. That was the answer he needed most.
