Stronger Every Time I Die
Benjamin stared blankly at the young man in front of him. Without realizing it, even his fingers had started to tremble. He kept his eyes locked on Arthur, as if trying to confirm something. The boy standing before him—his face, his build, even the look in his eyes and the way he moved—looked so much like that little boy from all those years ago. He’d always looked like his late wife ever since he was a child. Benjamin rubbed his eyes, wondering if he was seeing things. But when his vision cleared, that familiar, beloved face was still right in front of him. He slowly, unsteadily stepped toward Arthur, eyes never leaving him. Compared to ten years ago, Benjamin’s face was more lined with wrinkles, and his hair had turned completely white. His hands were covered in scars—some small, some large. Arthur had no idea what kind of hardships his grandfather had endured over the years to end up with so many scars. He’d always been a kind man. If he went through all that… was he scared? Was he alone? Arthur didn’t know. Not any of it. Benjamin lifted a trembling hand, wanting to touch Arthur—but stopped, afraid he might frighten the boy if he wasn’t really the person he hoped he was. The two of them stood face to face. Arthur was too choked up to speak. Benjamin didn’t dare believe. Ashley and Nina looked at them in confusion. “Wait… Grandpa? Arthur? What’s going on? You two know each other?” Nina asked. Ashley gently held Arthur’s hand. “Arthur… are you crying?” She glanced between Arthur and Benjamin, noting the nervous joy in the old man’s expression, and the stunned sorrow in Arthur’s. And suddenly, a suspicion crept into her mind.Even with the age and wrinkles, Benjamin’s features looked so much like Arthur’s. And Benjamin—when he heard Ashley call Arthur by name—his expression suddenly changed. His eyes filled with tears. “Arthur, child… your name is Arthur?” Hearing his name spoken in that voice, Arthur felt like he was a child again. Back then, that voice had always called to him with warmth. “Arthur, come to me.” Arthur nodded hard. “Yes! My name’s Arthur! Arthur!!” He said it with force, like he was terrified the old man would forget. Benjamin’s tears finally fell. He rushed forward and threw his arms around Arthur. “Arthur! It’s really you! It’s really you! I’m your grandpa—I’m your grandpa!” He pounded Arthur’s strong back, crying uncontrollably. Arthur hugged him just as tightly. He couldn’t hold it in anymore. He buried his face in Benjamin’s shoulder and sobbed like a child. “Grandpa… Grandpa, I finally found you…” In that moment, Arthur felt like a little boy again. Back when John and Raelynn adopted Zac, Arthur was constantly treated unfairly in the Gray family. Every time he was hurt, he’d run to his grandfather—who would always cheer him up, always comfort him. But then his grandfather had suddenly disappeared from the Gray family. And from that day on, Arthur never saw him again. All these years, in his past life and in this one, Arthur never gave up looking. He had come to Heaven Island hoping—just hoping—that maybe he’d find some clue about his grandfather. It had always seemed unlikely. Still, he came. A few days ago, Drake had invited him to take the entrance test for Heaven’s Cult, and Arthur had agreed immediately—not just out of curiosity, but because he had his own reasons. If he became a member, he could search the island freely for any trace of his grandfather. Even if he didn’t find him here, the influence and reach he gained would help him search the rest of the continent. But to think… Before he even took the test, his grandfather had appeared. Benjamin’s appearance had come so suddenly that Arthur thought he was dreaming. Only when he pinched himself and felt pain did he believe that what he was seeing—what he was holding—was real. Nina and the nearby guards were completely stunned by what they were witnessing. They hadn’t even had time to salute Benjamin yet. Nina stammered, “G-Grandpa? Y-You and Arthur are hugging?” Nina’s brain was practically smoking from the confusion. She still couldn’t figure out what was going on. She knew her grandfather—gentle and kind to her, sure—but to everyone else, he was cold, strict, and distant. She had never seen him act this close with anyone else. Ever.
