Stronger Every Time I Die
Arthur and Ashley jolted awake at the sound of Nina’s voice outside. They locked eyes, then instinctively yanked the blanket up over their chests. Arthur had always been... a little wild in the mornings. And with Nina just outside the door, that instinct definitely needed to be kept in check. Arthur let out a helpless laugh. Seriously, with Nina right there, did she really think he’d lose all sense of decency? Still getting no response, Nina’s voice grew more anxious by the second. Arthur finally called out, "We’re here. Just a moment." His tone wasn’t exactly friendly. They’d been in the middle of a lovely dream—and something even better—when she interrupted. Suddenly, Nina felt like a major nuisance. The two of them rushed to get dressed and freshen up. Outside, Nina finally relaxed when she heard Arthur’s reply. She’d gotten up extra early to make sure they were still home. She’d made some new friends around her own age last night, and she’d been buzzing with excitement ever since. When her grandfather returned, she couldn’t wait to tell him all about her two new friends. He always came back to personally oversee the annual membership assessment. Nina was certain Arthur and Ashley would pass. And once they did, she’d get to see them again! Even if they couldn’t always be together, the thought of meeting now and then was enough to make her happy. Knowing they were still in the house, Nina wasn’t in a rush anymore. She found a step in the courtyard, sat down, and casually started picking some of the prettiest flowers nearby. She was going to make a beautiful flower crown for Ashley. Ashley was already so pretty—if she wore the flower crown Nina made with care, she’d be even more beautiful! And since Arthur was clearly head over heels for Ashley, seeing her all dolled up would only make him fall even harder! With that in mind, Nina became even more focused and careful as she worked. Only the most flawless blooms made the cut—meaning the surrounding flowerbed was taking a bit of a beating. By the time she finished weaving the crown, the door to the house finally opened. Nina jumped to her feet. Her sweet little face lit up with a giant smile as she ran over. "Ashley! Arthur! You’re up!" She practically bounced as she held out the flower crown like a treasure and offered it to Ashley. "Ashley, I made this for you! You’re so pretty—this will look amazing on you!" Her wide eyes sparkled with excitement. Arthur and Ashley’s eyes widened in unison the moment they saw the crown. They both turned instinctively to look at the nearby flowerbed. Sure enough, the spot where Nina had been sitting was now surrounded by a mess of trampled petals and broken stems. All the best-looking flowers had been picked. What remained were wilted or damaged leftovers. Panic set in. Ashley gasped, "Nina, those flowers are rare! Why did you pick them?" They were just guests in this garden full of precious plants, and they’d been extra cautious not to disturb anything. But Nina had just gone to town on the flowerbed. A whole patch, totally ravaged. If the people at Heaven Island got upset about this, what was Arthur supposed to do? Nina blinked in confusion, glancing over at the damaged garden. "It’s just some flowers. Why are you freaking out?" She still held the crown in her hands, but Ashley wasn’t taking it. Noticing that, Nina’s big eyes dimmed with disappointment. Ashley glanced between the flowerbed and Nina, suddenly unsure what to say. Nina’s innocent and eager expression made it hard to be angry.Ashley gently pointed toward the flowers and explained, "These are really rare plants. We’re just staying here temporarily, so we have to be careful not to damage anything." Nina looked at the flowerbed, then suddenly smiled. "Oh, those flowers? Don’t worry! There are tons more like that in my garden. They’re rare elsewhere, but on Heaven Island, they grow in lots of places! It’s really not a big deal." That took both Arthur and Ashley by surprise. "Really?" they asked, still skeptical. Nina nodded. "Of course! Why would I lie to you?" After a moment of silence, Arthur asked, "Outside Heaven Island—have you ever been off the island before?" Up until now, Arthur had assumed Nina was just another resident born and raised on Heaven Island. Most people here never left. Only a few were ever sent out to handle purchases and other errands. Many of the kids had lived their whole lives without ever setting foot beyond the island’s borders.
