Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 598 A Familiar Face

After a brief struggle, Arthur managed to pull the creature out from the rocks. “It’s a huge crab!” Ashley cried out in delight. Arthur grinned, holding up their catch with pride. For the first time, he truly felt that sense of joy Ashley had talked about—that small but thrilling pleasure of finding something with your own hands. “It really is big. Looks like we’ve got ourselves a proper dinner tonight.” Fresh, organic, and wild—crabs like this were a real delicacy. They hadn’t eaten properly in days, having been too busy studying the material Drake had given them. This was a well-earned reward. Encouraged by their success, both of them grew excited. Ashley beamed. “Come on! Let’s keep looking. I bet there’s more hiding in these rocks!” The beach might not be as rich in sea life at sunset compared to the morning, but this area had one big advantage—no one else around. It wouldn’t be hard to gather enough for a good meal. With renewed energy, they wandered from rock to rock, carefully prying and peeking into every crevice. But after a while, their luck ran out. They searched and searched, only to come up empty. Just as they were about to give up, a soft, lively voice called out from not far away. “Not much left in the rocks this time of day. You should try digging on the beach.” They looked up in surprise. A girl, around sixteen or seventeen, stood near the edge of the waves. She held a small bucket and a shovel, much like theirs, and was watching them quietly. Arthur and Ashley exchanged glances. When had she gotten there? Sensing their confusion, the girl smiled. “I just got here. Saw you two hunting around the rocks.” Maybe it was because it was rare to meet someone close in age, but Ashley immediately felt a sense of warmth and familiarity from the girl. She stepped closer, curiosity lighting up her face. “Hey, do you know where we can find more?” As Ashley approached, the girl got a good look at her face—and her eyes lit up with wonder.“Wow… you’re so pretty! Seriously, you’re the most beautiful person I’ve ever seen!” Ashley’s face turned bright red under the sudden praise. Now close enough to see clearly, she took a better look at the girl. She was fresh-faced and naturally pretty, with delicate features untouched by makeup. When she smiled, two little dimples appeared at the corners of her mouth—soft, sweet, and charming. Like a girl-next-door. Ashley smiled back, her tone genuine. “You’re really cute too.” The girl giggled, clearly pleased. “Thanks!” Her eyes crinkled into crescents when she smiled, and her dimples deepened—a picture of warmth and friendliness. In that moment, it felt like they had known each other for a long time. Sometimes, people just clicked. It was something you felt, not explained. Still… Ashley couldn’t shake the strange feeling of familiarity. Something about this girl tugged at her memory. But she was sure—she’d never met her before. The girl cheerfully pointed to small holes scattered across the sand. “See those little holes? Stuff’s hiding in there!” Ashley listened carefully as the girl explained, letting her lead her to a small mound in the sand. “See this bump? Something’s definitely under here. Watch.” She stuck her little shovel into the sand with practiced ease, gave it a firm lift—and unearthed a decent-sized object. Ashley gasped. “No way—there is something!” And when she saw what it was, she nearly shrieked. “It’s another crab! A big one!” Startled by the light, the crab shot out of the sand and started scuttling away. Both girls shouted and chased after it, laughing and stumbling in the wet sand. Just as the crab was about to escape, a tall shadow loomed over it. With one smooth motion, Arthur bent down and snatched it up effortlessly. The girl clapped and cheered. “Whoa! That was amazing! You caught it so easily!” She peppered Arthur with praise, clapping excitedly—and for a moment, he was a little embarrassed by the attention. But as she looked up at him and really saw his face—both of them froze. Arthur and the girl stared at each other, stunned. Because somehow… they looked alike. There was something in the shape of their eyes, the curve of their brows, the angle of their cheekbones. Ashley noticed it too. No wonder she’d felt such an odd sense of familiarity with the girl. She looked like Arthur. But Arthur only had three sisters—no younger sisters, no cousins he knew of. Maybe it’s just a coincidence, they all thought silently. No one mentioned it out loud. Ashley leaned in close to Arthur and slipped her arm through his, smiling sweetly. “You were right. My Arthur is the most amazing man in the world.”
