Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 540 Dense as a Log

Seeing Taylor's innocent worry, Arthur sighed. This guy needed a girlfriend as soon as possible. But the genuine care in Taylor's eyes soothed Arthur's anger, replacing it with guilt. He glanced at the red mark on Taylor's forehead. "I'm fine. Ashley's inside. You okay?" Taylor waved it off. "I'm fine! But why didn't you answer? What were you doing?" His eyes were so guileless Arthur didn't know how to respond. After a pause, Arthur said, "We were asleep. Didn't hear you." Taylor's face cleared. "Oh! That explains it. Scared me half to death." Though he could've sworn Arthur looked… resentful… Relieved Taylor wasn't probing further, Arthur relaxed. A glance inside showed Ashley had disappeared–likely tidying up in the bedroom. After confirming she wasn't in the living room, Arthur stepped aside. "Come in." Taylor followed, immediately launching into questions. "Arthur, why'd you fight Henry's gang again? I just got out of my research bubble and heard you were hospitalized! Came straight here." He'd been so absorbed in his work that he'd missed meal times and campus gossip. Only when grabbing food at the cafeteria did he overhear students excitedly thanking Arthur for their newly arrived stipends, realizing Arthur had been gone. He'd abandoned his meal to rush over. Arthur's hospitalization and his efforts to secure stipends for poor students had spread across Governance University days ago. But Taylor only knew about it now. Arthur gave a brief explanation. Taylor listened, then gave a thumbs-up with his eyes shining with admiration. "Arthur, you're amazing! They're so lucky to have you! You're their savior!" Taylor's family wasn't wealthy, but he'd never lacked tuition fees or living expenses. He'd been unaware of the stipend struggles until now. Who knew such darkness lurked in their campus's shadows? Mention of Finley ignited Taylor's fury. "I knew he was scum! Always targeting you, but to exploit poor students too?! Preying on those with nothing… He's disgusting!" He wanted to punch Finley right then. Arthur patted his shoulder. "Leave Finley to me. You're no match for him."Finley outclassed Taylor in power, wealth, and cunning. Taylor's naivety would only put him in danger if Finley turned on him. Taylor knew Arthur was right. At least he'd matured enough not to act recklessly. As they talked, they entered the living room. Ashley emerged just then. After quick greetings, Taylor frowned. "Wait… Arthur, Ashley, why are your lips a bit swollen?" The two froze, hands flying to their mouths. Minds racing for excuses, Taylor suddenly gasped. "Did Henry's gang punch you in the mouth during the fight?" Seeing his triumphant deduction, Arthur and Ashley exchanged glances. Then, in unison, they nodded. "Yeah." Taylor exploded. "That Henry! Expulsion wasn't enough? What did he want this time? To gang up on you? He's always been Finley's lackey. This has Finley written all over it! That two-faced snake! I always knew he was a monster in human skin!"
