Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 524 The Lucky Ones

Arthur smirked. “If you’re already nagging now, I’m doomed by the time we’re old.” Ashley couldn’t help but laugh. She gave him a light punch on the arm. “Wow, you’re already tired of me? That didn’t take long.” Honestly, she didn’t know what had come over her. She wasn’t usually the talkative type. With most people, she barely said a word—definitely not the type to fuss over anyone. But around Arthur, she just couldn’t help herself. She kept thinking. If I remind him a little more, maybe next time he’ll actually take care of himself. Every time she nagged, it was because Arthur kept ignoring his own health. Arthur clutched his arm dramatically and winced. “Oww!” Same over-the-top act as before. Even though she knew Arthur was probably faking it again, Ashley still panicked. "Arthur, did I really hurt you? Are you okay? Does it hurt?" It wasn’t even a hit. Just a light tap. And she’d been careful to avoid any of the injured spots. She’d never hurt him on purpose. Just the thought of him being in pain made her heart twist. But seeing him all bandaged up and flinching like that—even if it was just a joke—made her panic for a second. As she leaned in to check on him, Arthur used the moment to strike—leaning in fast and planting a quick kiss on her cheek. Same trick. Same setup. Same play. And it worked—because she let it. Ashley’s cheeks turned bright red as she gave him a gentle shove, laughing despite herself. “You’re the worst!” Arthur cracked up, his laughter echoing through the student council office. Yeah. He was definitely enjoying every second of it. The next day, a new transfer student joined one of the freshman classes. Rumor had it the new guy had ties to Finley—either a friend or someone close to him.Arthur didn’t bother keeping tabs on the group whom the police had taken away. They had already been expelled. His goal had been achieved. Honestly, even if they had managed to graduate from Governance University, people like that would’ve just ended up being a problem for society. Expelling them early saved everyone from their constant trouble. Over the next few days, Arthur didn’t rush back into his academic work. Instead, he stayed in the student council president’s office. He had borrowed student records from the academic affairs office and was reviewing them carefully, one by one. Meanwhile, Ashley continued recovering on campus. While she rested, Mr. Devon sent her assignments remotely. For now, she wasn’t in any hurry to return to classes. It was a Saturday. Ashley came looking for Arthur. “Arthur, what are you doing here so early again?” Even on weekends, he was buried in paperwork in the student council office. Arthur looked up at the sound of her voice and smiled. “Didn’t expect to see you up this early.” Ashley nodded and held out the breakfast in her hands. “Yeah. I brought you breakfast.” Arthur glanced at the meal—just like the one she brought every morning—and felt a quiet warmth settle in his chest. He set aside his work and sat down at the nearby table. “What’s on the menu today?” Ashley started laying out the food in front of him. “Pancakes and hash browns—your favorites.” Arthur looked at her—so kind and thoughtful—and for a moment, it felt like they were just an ordinary married couple, sharing a quiet, simple life together. Ordinary. And happy. Ashley, who used to live a life where she never had to cook or worry about daily chores, now willingly looked after everything for him. He’d tried many times to talk her out of it. But she’d always smile and say, “I want to. It makes me happy.” If it had been anyone else, Ashley never would’ve changed. There was no way a girl like her—a once-pampered heiress—would’ve turned into someone so devoted, someone who now happily took care of Arthur’s daily life like a loving wife.Only after falling for Arthur did Ashley truly understand just how powerful love could be. Love brings two people—who once had nothing to do with each other—closer than family. Love could make someone willingly give their all without expecting anything in return. It softened her edges, quieted her pride, and made her into someone who simply wanted to make his life a little easier, a little more peaceful. They were lucky. Many people had spent their whole lives chasing love—something distant, uncertain—and still never found someone they could truly connect with or love for a lifetime. Some settled into marriages without real connection, spending their days with someone they could never fully open up to. But Arthur and Ashley? No matter how hard life got, they had each other to lean on. And that made them truly fortunate. That made all the difference.
