Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 289 His Personal Grudges

John eagerly handed the documents to them, his mind already envisioning the moment Renee would become his wife. Soon, the three of them would purchase a cozy home and build a blissful life together. There was a reason he had sold the Gray family villa without hesitation. That villa had been his and Raelynn's home for decades, filled with remnants of her and their daughters' lives. He didn't want Renee to feel unsettled by those memories after becoming his wife. There was another reason. Once he sold the Gray family villa, divorced Raelynn, left her penniless, and sabotaged his three daughters' careers, they would have no choice but to leave South City. Since Renee had agreed to marry him, he was determined to make her happy. He would never allow Raelynn to be an eyesore to Renee or interfere with their relationship. After relentless effort, he had finally driven Raelynn and the Gray sisters away. Only then had John breathed a sigh of relief. It was said that they had even taken all their belongings with them. Later, when he heard that Julie and Rosie planned to sell their homes, he immediately sent people to inspect them. Once those two houses were sold, they would have no foothold in South City. Only then could John be completely at ease. He had assumed that such a joyous occasion would make Renee leap into his arms as she had before. Yet, she merely accepted the documents and scrutinized them carefully. Without the anticipated embrace, John felt a twinge of disappointment. But he quickly reasoned it away. Renee must have been too overwhelmed to react. After Renee and Zac finished examining the documents, they exchanged a glance. John leaned in again. His tone eager, he asked, "Renee, I've picked a date. Let's go try on wedding dresses. The caregivers are here, we won't be gone long." He expected her to react as she used to, flustered and excited at the mention of wedding dresses. But to his surprise, Renee responded indifferently, "Zac hasn't fully recovered. How could I possibly think about wedding dresses right now?" John stiffened. Why is Renee's demeanor suddenly so cold? He shook his head, dismissing it as his imagination. He tried again. "I spoke with the doctor. He said Zac's bones are shattered and won't heal anytime soon, but he can attend the wedding in a wheelchair. Let's try on the dresses first, and then finalize everything. How about that?" As he spoke, he quickly added, "I already picked out the dress. We just need to try it on." Unconsciously, his tone had taken on a cautious edge. Right now, his sole obsession was marrying Renee, the woman he had spent years yearning for but never obtained. Yet, Renee didn't even pause to consider his words. Instead, she seemed vaguely impatient. Frowning, she said, "Attend the wedding in a wheelchair? John Gray, are you not the least bit concerned that something could happen to Zac?" John froze. His breath hitched. She had called him by his full name. She used to be so gentle, always calling him "Johnny" in that soft, affectionate voice. John quickly regained his composure and rushed to explain, "No, Renee, that's not what I meant. I just... I just want to marry you as soon as possible." By the end, his voice had unconsciously weakened. He hadn't even realized that ever since he had secured the stock transfer documents, he had begun to act more subservient. Renee waved a hand dismissively. "Enough. Zac wants to rest. You should leave." Her apathetic tone was enough to make Zac pause. He had witnessed his mom and John's affection before. Ever since Raelynn had left, his mom had been personally taking care of him. In the hospital room, they had often behaved like lovers reunited after a long separation. Zac had been sent to the Gray family at a young age, but he had never felt any sense of belonging. All he ever found was deception and calculated schemes. He had always yearned for the warmth of a real family. But in the Gray family, everyone was an enemy. He could never afford to let his guard down. He had never dared to drop his façade, fearing that any moment of vulnerability would expose him. He had once believed his mom despised John as much as he did. But after observing her closely for the past few days, he had realized her eyes held nothing but love for him. If his mom was truly happy, Zac was willing to let go of his resentment. Over the past few days, he had gradually attempted to accept John for his mom's sake, he was willing to suppress his personal grudges. Living in a constant state of conflict had drained him. He had never truly wanted to fight. And as for Seacity, he had never desired it in the first place.
