Stronger Every Time I Die
Susie had always been proud. Even after the Gray family’s downfall, when they were forced to move out, she had tried her best to maintain some dignity in front of others. She never imagined that one day, she would have to throw away her pride and kneel alongside Raelynn to beg for mercy. Julie and Rosie exchanged a glance. Gritting their teeth, they, too, knelt down! "Arthur, we’ve already received our punishment. Please forgive us! We are still family, aren’t we?" Arthur’s mother and all three of his sisters were now kneeling before him, making his position instantly awkward. The murmurs in the crowd started up again. "They’re already kneeling and apologizing. No matter how deep the grudge, isn’t that enough?" "Making your biological mother and sisters kneel before you… That’s really unfilial." "To kneel and apologize in front of so many people, it shows they’re truly remorseful." "They say there’s no lasting grudge between family. If they are willing to change and make it up to Mr. Gray, maybe he should give them a chance." "They’ve fallen so low. No matter how much resentment there was before, they’ve clearly repented. With Mr. Gray’s power, helping them a little wouldn’t be that hard." "Mrs. Gray has it tough too, raising three daughters who lost their jobs. It makes sense that she came to seek help from Mr. Gray." "But still, this is Mr. Gray and Ms. Gibson’s engagement banquet. Must they cause such a scene on such an important day?" "First, it was the Yarbrough family, and now it’s the Gray family. Why must they choose today of all days?" "Every family has its struggles." "Mr. Gray still isn’t helping them up? How can he just stand there while they beg like this?" Hearing the crowd’s whispers, a flicker of triumph flashed in Raelynn’s eyes. If she couldn’t persuade Arthur, then she would use public opinion to force him to accept them! Arthur was now engaged to a daughter of the Gibson family, which meant he would most likely establish himself in Seacity for good. If he wanted to secure his place here, his reputation would matter. If he heartlessly cast them out, he would be labeled as unfilial and heartless. That would be a terrible mark on someone trying to enter the upper echelons of society. She didn’t believe Arthur would take that risk. If she could just stay, she swore she would treat Arthur well, cherish him, and make it up to him. Raelynn continued, "Arthur, I swear I’ll make it up to you. Please, just give me a chance. Don’t let me live the rest of my life in regret, okay?" "Arthur, we owe you so much. I promise we will make amends. We were tricked by Zac—we were victims too!" Susie quickly added. "That’s right, Arthur. We can’t survive in South City anymore. We had to sell our home, and Zac keeps sending people to harass us. We had no choice but to come to you." Rosie lifted her head, her eyes red-rimmed. Having grown up privileged and sheltered, they had never faced humiliation like this before. As she knelt there, Rosie felt both regret and resentment. Julie simply said, "Arthur, blood is thicker than water. We sincerely regret everything. We are formally apologizing to you. Please, just forgive us." Raelynn looked at her three kneeling daughters, her heart aching. My daughters had always been delicate and proud. When had us ever been forced to do something so humiliating? She truly did feel guilty toward Arthur, but at the same time, she also resented him for forcing them into such a disgraceful situation in front of Seacity’s elite. If only he had agreed earlier, they could have attended his engagement banquet happily, without making a scene like this. Arthur looked at the pitiful sight before him, and all he wanted to do was laugh. Back at Cloudia Corporation in South City, when they barged into his office to apologize, he had almost believed they were sincere. But now, he realized—he had been too naive. Arthur pondered. Ha. If they were truly remorseful, if they had even a shred of conscience, would they have chosen this moment, this method, to try and manipulate me again? If they truly had a conscience, would they have subjected me to eight years of torment? Spencer, Nancy, and the others were beside themselves with frustration. They hadn’t expected these women to be so relentless. Ashley had already exposed them so thoroughly, yet they had still come back and resorted to kneeling before Arthur! In front of so many people, did they really have no shame at all?
