Stronger Every Time I Die
Arthur had already formulated a plan after hearing Spencer’s words. Under the pretense of using the restroom, he quietly stepped away to make a phone call, instructing someone to dig into the Gibson family’s embezzlement case from three years ago. The knowledge he carried from his previous life might just be the key to cracking it open. By lunchtime, Nancy had arranged a lavish spread. She had specifically consulted Ashley beforehand to ensure that the dishes were Arthur’s favorites. People often claim that visiting a mother-in-law’s home can be stiff and uncomfortable for a son-in-law, but Arthur felt nothing of the sort at the Gibson residence. Instead, he experienced a genuine warmth—something that truly felt like home. He could sense their sincerity in the way they treated him. Midway through their meal, the butler rushed in with an urgent report. Stephen had officially revoked Walker Group’s eligibility to bid on the project! The news hit Nancy and Spencer like a thunderbolt. Spencer slammed his hand against the table, his voice seething with rage. "That Stephen! He’s abusing his power for personal revenge!" Nancy's expression darkened with worry. "Walker Group has always been a government partner. Our Gibson family was counting on this project for the coming years. How can he just cancel it on a whim over personal issues?" Ashley’s face turned crimson with anger. "Stephen is so shameless! Just like Maris!" "It’s not just those two. I’m sure Zane had a hand in this too!" Nancy snapped. Spencer gritted his teeth. "I must’ve been a fool to ever call Zane my brother!" He had always been uneasy about some of Zane’s actions, but the man had a way of acting like he genuinely had Spencer’s back. Only now did Spencer see the truth. If it weren’t for the clash between Maris and Arthur, I probably would’ve still seen him as a friend. Now that Spencer was struggling, Zane had wasted no time in kicking him while he was down. Back when I was still in a strong position, they never would’ve dared pull something like this! Arthur carefully probed, "What kind of project is it? Maybe I can help."In the past, with Spencer running things, Nancy had never put much effort into managing Walker Group. The company had always maintained a mediocre performance. It wasn’t until Spencer was framed that Nancy stepped up and started taking the company seriously. Over time, Walker Group became the Gibson family’s primary source of income. As for the industries Natalie expanded into later, that was another story. Arthur wasn’t too familiar with Walker Group. When Spencer heard his question, he took it as nothing more than concern. With a reassuring tone, he said, "It’s nothing to worry about. You’re still in school. Just focus on your studies. This is an issue for the adults—you don’t need to concern yourself with it." Arthur arched a brow and glanced at Ashley. Did she really not tell her parents who I am? Ashley dropped her head, feeling embarrassed. Back then, she was still young and had left home after a big argument. She hadn’t dared to tell her family she was dating someone. Even when they later found out that Arthur was the chairman of Cloudia Corporation, Ashley had begged Natalie to keep it from their parents so she wouldn’t get scolded. Arthur immediately caught on—she definitely hadn’t told them. He subtly tilted his head and gave her a quick side glance. Ashley understood the message loud and clear. A chill ran down her spine as she silently panicked. I’m so screwed. Tonight is going to be rough. By the time she looked up again, Arthur had already regained his composed smile. He spoke earnestly, "Mr. Gibson, I own a company myself. I might be able to help." He meant it. It wasn’t just because Ashley was his future wife—it was also because Spencer and Nancy had treated him like one of their own. Spencer and Nancy exchanged a quick glance. Nancy turned to Arthur and asked, "Arthur, we don’t even know where in South City your family lives. One of these days, we’d love to pay a visit to your parents." South City wasn’t particularly large compared to Seacity, but aside from knowing that Arthur was from there, they had no idea which family he belonged to or who his parents were. Neither Spencer nor Nancy spent much time online, so they weren’t up to date on events in South City. Most of what they knew came from Natalie and Ashley. Cloudia Corporation hadn’t expanded to Seacity yet, and the news from the South City banquet had been deliberately kept under wraps. Because of that, Arthur’s identity as the chairman of Cloudia Corporation hadn’t spread widely. That was also why, when Maris and the others first heard Arthur’s name, they hadn’t recognized him. The only thing they had heard was that Cloudia Corporation had begun establishing a presence in both the capital and Seacity. But as for the actual person running Cloudia Corporation, neither Natalie nor Ashley had mentioned anything. Spencer and Nancy simply assumed that the sisters had never met the chairman. All they knew was that his last name was Gray. And with so many people sharing that surname, Spencer and Nancy never even considered the possibility that Arthur could be the powerful chairman of Cloudia Corporation.
