Stronger Every Time I Die

Chapter 172 More Friends More Problems

"Oh? Is that so? You’re still threatening me?" Arthur raised an eyebrow and asked in return. Then, without any hesitation, he pulled out his phone and calmly dialed the police. The crowd couldn’t see his screen, but when they saw him making a call, they immediately started speculating. Is he calling for backup? The call connected quickly, and Arthur’s voice rang out loud and clear amidst the tense silence. "Hello, I’m at the Opulent Haven Auctions banquet hall. A group of people tried to gang up on me, but I managed to subdue them in self-defense. Some of them got hurt in the process. Could you send someone over when you have time?" The crowd went quiet. Since when do people call for backup this politely? Or is he calling in some big shots? Maris was stunned, momentarily forgetting his pain. This bastard… he’s a lunatic! But then, he reconsidered. Given Arthur’s age, Maris quickly came to a different conclusion—this had to be some schoolyard thug, someone used to street fights, who had connections with gang members. Realizing this, Maris no longer cared about appearances. His only thought now was survival. There were plenty of people around, but Maris knew the truth—when faced with danger and personal interests, no one would step forward to help him. No one wanted to be caught up in a brawl, especially the wealthy and powerful. Their reputations mattered too much. Otherwise, he and his friends wouldn’t have been beaten so badly in the first place! Since Arthur had openly called for backup, calling his own people wouldn’t be seen as an abuse of power. A sinister smile crept onto Maris’ lips. I originally planned to deal with him in secret, but he’s so stupid he’s calling people out in the open. If he gets injured in the fight later, well… that’s just how things go. No matter how good he is, he can’t take on a whole crowd. Maris refused to believe that Arthur could call in more people than he could. He didn’t even bother calling an ambulance—he immediately fished out his phone with his other hand and quickly dialed a familiar number. As soon as the call connected, Maris’ voice, though strained with pain, was filled with malice. "I got jumped at Opulent Haven Auctions! The other guy called for backup! Get everyone here, right now! Bring the gear! Move as fast as you can!"Hanging up, Maris clutched his broken hand and kept a wary eye on Arthur, fearing he might suddenly attack again. The spectators quickly realized what was happening and started panicking. This is about to turn into an all-out gang war! They had come here to network with business executives and participate in the auction—not to get caught in a street brawl. Many people began quietly slipping out of the venue. Arthur, however, remained standing there, unfazed. He even allowed a small smile to form on his lips, as if he was looking forward to what was about to happen. The crowd thought they were imagining things or that Arthur had lost his mind. In the tense standoff, both sides’ reinforcements arrived at the same time. The difference? Maris’ people showed up armed to the teeth with clubs, knives, and other weapons, looking fierce and aggressive. Arthur’s "backup," on the other hand, arrived in full police uniforms, wielding batons. Since they had received a report of a mass brawl at Opulent Haven Auctions, an unusually large number of officers had been dispatched. When the two groups met at the entrance, they all froze. The police had only been informed that a group had attacked a single person and that he had managed to subdue them. They assumed there weren’t that many assailants. Most of the officers had been sent to maintain order. But now, faced with a mob of more than fifty armed thugs, they immediately tensed up. The officers quickly raised their batons and shouted, "Drop your weapons! Hands on your heads! Squat down immediately!" The lead officer wasted no time calling headquarters for backup. Even though they had dispatched a sizable team, they were still outnumbered by Maris’ men. Inside the banquet hall, Maris and his remaining people stood frozen in shock. Wait… what the heck is going on? That voice… something was off. The thugs Maris had called in were just about to rush inside when they too came to a screeching halt. Maris had only told them that the other guy had backup and that they needed to bring more people. But Maris never mentioned that the backup was the police! What the hell are we supposed to do now?No matter how many of them there were, it wouldn’t make a difference against the law! And to make things worse, Maris had explicitly told them to bring weapons! He had practically handed them over on a silver platter! The entire situation took a bizarre turn in an instant. The police swiftly moved in, surrounding the armed thugs. Some of them instinctively tried to run, but with the officers barking orders, they had no choice but to drop their weapons and surrender.
