Stronger Every Time I Die
They had never once considered switching doctors. After all, no one understood Zac's condition better than Pierce. Anyone else would be inferior in comparison. At the time, Pierce had explained that Zac's heart disease was congenital and completely untreatable. The blood vessels around his heart were unusually structured, making a transplant impossible. All they could do was care for him meticulously, ensuring he never experienced negative emotions, no sadness, no anger, nothing that could put stress on his fragile heart. John knew nothing about medicine. He had never questioned a thing. For years, he had cherished Zac like a precious treasure, protecting him as if even the slightest harm would shatter him. But now, they were telling him that Renee and Zac had deceived him all along! That's impossible! Renee was such a kind and innocent girl. There is no way she would lie to me! Clutching his head in agony, John refused to believe it was true. The rest of the Gray family was in utter shock. They had always adored Zac, making endless sacrifices for him because of his condition. The entire family had yielded to his every need without hesitation. Of course, they had moments of frustration, but with his heart disease, any strong emotion could lead to him fainting, or worse. Whether they liked it or not, they had no choice but to accommodate him. But it had all been a lie. Susie, who had been the most reluctant to believe Zac capable of such deceit, could no longer deny the truth. Not only had he faked saving them that one time, but his heart disease, his greatest affliction, was also a complete fabrication! They had loved him for so many years, given him everything, even sacrificed their own little brother because of him. And yet, it had all been a scam. Tears streamed down Susie's face. She glared at Zac, lying in bed, fists clenched with the overwhelming urge to punch him. She murmured in disbelief, "How could this happen? How could this happen?"Among the three sisters, she had been closest to Zac, the one who played with him the most, who loved him the most. And it had all been a lie. She still remembered when they first met Zac. He had been frail, claiming his heart condition required him to get plenty of sunlight. He had loved Arthur's room, the balcony let in the perfect amount of sun. Arthur hadn't wanted to give up his room. After all, he had lived there for eight years. Anyone would have resisted. But their parents had forced him to move out. Zac had also said he couldn't engage in strenuous activity, that he envied them for being able to take Arthur out to play. Hearing that, they immediately abandoned Arthur and stayed inside to play Zac's favorite games. Their dad had told them Zac was weak and that they, as kind children, should take special care of him. They couldn't let him feel left out. Their dad despised unkind children. However, Arthur had never liked Zac. Because of that, they had all believed Arthur wasn't a good person. That he didn't deserve their love. John had thought the same. Zac had only been eight at the time. An eight-year-old child had managed to weave such an elaborate lie, sustaining it flawlessly for ten whole years. As the full weight of this realization sank in, the entire Gray family shuddered, including John. They recalled what Yoder had said. Zac was a master of deception. Even his love for the Gray family might not have been real. Then they thought about Arthur, who had been cast aside. About Julie, whose shares had somehow ended up in Zac's name. Now that they were no longer blind to the truth, everything became painfully clear. Silence blanketed the hospital room, an eerie, suffocating quiet. No one spoke, yet for the first time, their minds had never been clearer. All except for John. He was still trapped in his heartbreak over Renee's betrayal. While everyone else was drowning in a storm of emotions, Zac slowly opened his eyes. John noticed first. "Zac, you're awake!" He softened his voice, as if afraid of startling him. Seeing his reaction, Raelynn's doubts deepened. John's love for Zac was disturbingly unnatural. Even now, with the truth out in the open, he was still treating him with utmost care. The moment Zac saw John, his eyes welled up with tears. "Dad..." John's heart ached for him, but still confined to the hospital bed, he could do nothing. He anxiously looked to Raelynn and the three sisters, silently pleading for their help. But they only stood there, staring coldly, unmoved. Zac immediately sensed that something was off. His gaze swept across the room, and his heart sank. So, they found out about my condition after all. He had already heard the news about Pierce being blacklisted from the medical field. Back when Arthur's men had beaten him, he had feared this exact outcome. He just hadn't expected the truth to unravel so soon.
