My Cold-Hearted Ex Is Begging for Me
"Morty?" Ellis was uncertain. "Him?" Maya was slightly startled. "What's he up to?" "It's just a suspicion, not necessarily him." "If you didn't buy it, maybe it was a gift from someone. Could you ask him?" "I'll ask after we open the packages." Ellis wondered what was inside those elegantly wrapped boxes. The two quickly unpacked everything and arranged the items on the sofa. Faced with beautiful clothes, bags, and shoes, Maya couldn't help saying, "I feel like whoever sent you these really knows your size well." Ellis felt the same since she had checked the sizes of everything. Just from that alone, she could rule out Morty as the sender. With the chill fading, she crossed her arms. "This stuff is worth a lot of money. I'm thinking of selling it." Maya poked her a bit forcefully. "Find out who sent it first!"After a moment of thought, Ellis came up with a simple and effective solution; she was a VIP customer at these brands, just needing to contact the staff who usually serviced her account. Through the brand representatives, she found out it was Emma who had bought and sent the items to her. Hearing it was Emma's doing, Maya immediately made an unfavorable connection. "Is this some sort of compensation from Easton's mother, charged to Emma's card, and Emma didn't return it but used that money to buy these for you?" Ellis couldn't help but want to scream for help. Did Emma spend the 40 million dollars? How much did she spend? She urgently called Emma. "Ms. Emma, you didn't return the 40 million dollars?" These past few days, thinking about persuading Ellis to accept a blind date she had arranged, Emma seized the opportunity when Ellis reached out first, only to be blindsided by Ellis's accusation about not transferring the money back to Sophia. "I returned it! If you don't believe me, ask Sophia!"Emma's firm tone gave no hint of deceit. Ellis had verbally asked Emma to return the 40 million dollars but forgot to confirm whether she actually did. To avoid Emma spending all the money and Easton asking her for it, leaving her with a huge debt, it was better to confirm with Sophia. "It's returned? Then why randomly buy me a bunch of clothes?" She wasn't so poor that she couldn't afford clothes, making her look destitute. Emma's actions were odd, making it hard not to suspect her motives. "Dress you up a bit." Emma unconsciously lifted her chin a bit. "If you look good, it reflects well on both of us." Ellis wasn't swayed by Emma's superficial reasoning. "Ms. Emma, don't beat around the bush. What are you up to?" "You're dressed in cheap stuff all over; it's easy for people to look down on you." "Ms. Emma, cut it off!" "I'm planning for you to meet a promising young man. You can't go dressed in cheap clothes." Faced with Ellis's impatience, Emma dropped the preliminaries.Another man? Ellis hung up the phone expressionlessly. The dial tone sounded, and Emma knew her foster daughter's next move would likely be to block her number. At that moment, Ellis radiated displeasure from every pore. Maya, concerned, asked, "What mischief is your Ms. Emma up to now?" Ellis sighed helplessly. "Ms. Emma is really persistent about setting me up with men. She just won't give up." Emma was stubborn about getting her remarried quickly! She had said countless times that she just wanted to make money, not find a man, but Emma wouldn't listen. Maya patted Ellis on the shoulder sympathetically. Dealing with a stubborn Emma was pitiable! "Look on the bright side, at least it was Emma who sent the stuff, not Morty." Maya tried to console her. Ellis felt goosebumps. "You do have a point." Right now, Morty was scarier than Emma. One was constantly thinking about marrying her off to some rich guy, the other seemed to have a beef with her, concocting behind-the-scenes schemes to make her life difficult with bizarre actions. Thinking it over, weren't all these troubles originating from that jinx, Easton? If she had known that marrying—and then divorcing—Easton would lead to days like this, she should have smacked herself hard on the head back then to knock some sense into herself, instead of indulging in foolish fantasies about Easton falling for her. Glancing at the neatly arranged items, she casually pushed aside a couple of garments and sat down on the sofa. "You know, Morty sent me a bouquet yesterday, said it was an apology. It was creepy; it really freaked me out." "Ah?" Maya was momentarily confused. "He doesn't even know what he did wrong, just sent flowers. Weird!" The thought of Morty neurotically sending her flowers made Ellis feel queasy. "A guy sending flowers to a woman, if I didn't know about your past with Morty, I'd think he was chasing you." After saying this, Maya spat at her own stereotypical thinking. The world is full of stereotypes, and the act of a man giving flowers to a woman is often seen as expressing interest, one of those stereotypes.
