I Married My Ex's Billionaire Uncle

Chapter 188

Liza hurried over and grabbed Gavin’s arm, her face etched with concern. “Gavin, are you hurt? Tell me what’s wrong!” Gavin leaned back slightly, his expression calm but teasing. “Mrs. Liza, you’re back. I thought you weren’t planning to come home tonight?” Liza froze, stunned for a moment before anger bubbled up. What is this man even talking about? His eyes, cold and piercing, opened slowly, revealing no trace of drowsiness despite his earlier posture. He rubbed them gently and frowned, as though struggling to focus. Though the living room was brightly lit, Gavin’s gaze seemed distant and unfocused, his vision clouded. He lowered his head slightly, masking his discomfort from Liza. In a low, casual tone, he said, “Pass me my phone.” Liza blinked, confused. The phone was right beside him—he only had to stretch out his hand to grab it.Noticing her hesitation, Gavin’s expression grew more serious. After a moment of silence, he closed his eyes briefly, as if doing so could somehow ease the pain he was feeling. “Where is my phone?” he repeated. Liza’s brows furrowed with concern. She leaned closer, studying him carefully. “Gavin… what’s going on? Are you…” She hesitated before brushing her hand against his cheek. As her eyes locked with his, realization dawned. “Gavin, is something wrong with your eyes?” “I’m not blind,” he replied bluntly, trying to downplay the situation. “Can’t I just ask you to pass me my phone?” His tone was light, almost dismissive, but it carried an undercurrent of something heavier—something he clearly didn’t want her to notice. Liza sighed, exasperated. “The phone is right next to your hand, Gavin. You don’t need me to hand it to you.” An awkward silence hung between them. Liza stared at him, her worry mingling with annoyance.Gavin opened his eyes again, a faint hint of grievance softening his gaze. “Liza,” he said, his voice low and almost accusing, “didn’t you say you like me the most? Now you won’t even help me with something so small?” “…What?!” Liza’s face turned scarlet. Not this again! She couldn’t believe he was still holding on to that offhand comment from before. Flustered, she tossed the phone into his lap and quickly put some distance between them. Her voice wavered as she retorted, “That was just a misunderstanding! I was joking! Besides, our marriage is just an agreement—we don’t actually have feelings for each other!” Gavin quietly took the phone and found the doctor’s number. But instead of making the call, he raised his head and said calmly, “It’s late. You should go rest.” Liza stared at him, dumbfounded. Something about him seemed off tonight. When she’d rushed home, George had told her Gavin was injured and refusing to go to the hospital. But now, it was clear he wasn’t hurt at all. She realized with a pang of irritation that George must have lied to get her back. And since she arrived, Gavin had been teasing her relentlessly instead of explaining anything. Her temper flared. “Fine! Do whatever you want! I’m done caring about you!” she snapped before storming off. Gavin watched her leave, his expression unreadable. After a moment, he picked up the phone and made a call to George. “Cut the power to the villa,” he instructed. George, caught off guard, hesitated. “What? Um… okay, President. But, uh…” As someone who prided himself on shipping the president and Young Madam, George couldn’t resist digging for information. “When exactly did Young Madam say she liked you the most? I don’t remember hearing about that!” Gavin’s patience was already thin. “She said it before we got married. Why else would she have agreed to marry me? And what does this have to do with you?” George fell silent. This man is seriously delusional! Of course, George knew the truth: their marriage was nothing more than an agreement, and Liza had never said anything remotely like that. But seeing the usually stoic and aloof Gavin boast with such conviction… it was strangely amusing. For all his cold exterior, it turned out that the president wasn’t above exaggerating to comfort himself. … George flipped the main power switch, plunging Longwan Residential into complete darkness. Liza had just settled into her bedroom when the lights unexpectedly went out. Realizing the power had been cut, she frowned but wasn’t too bothered. Her phone and laptop were fully charged, so she could manage without electricity. But then a thought struck her—a blackout would render Gavin completely blind! Her heart tightened with worry, and she instinctively rushed toward the door. Gavin wouldn’t be able to see anything in the darkness, and with neither the butler nor George around to assist him, he would be utterly helpless. As his wife, it was her responsibility to check on him. She took a step out of the room but suddenly froze. Wait a minute... Gavin was the one who drove me away earlier. Wouldn’t it be embarrassing if I rushed to him the moment the lights went out? Liza hesitated, standing at the top of the staircase. A mix of emotions swirled within her—concern, pride, and a faint hint of frustration. Forget it! Despite her internal conflict, she couldn’t shake the thought of Gavin alone in the dark. His blindness in low light would leave him completely vulnerable. Would he feel helpless? Would the darkness remind him of painful memories from his past? Her chest tightened further at the thought. She imagined him sitting there, lost and possibly afraid.Just then, a loud thud echoed from downstairs, followed by a man’s muffled voice. Her heart leaped into her throat. Did Gavin fall? Without a second thought, Liza sprinted toward the stairs, panic flooding her mind. “Gavin, you bastard! You’re always making people worry!” she muttered under her breath as she hurried down to find him.
