I Married My Ex's Billionaire Uncle
The group of doctors exchanged glances, their expressions darkened with frustration. They were all reputable physicians from the Medical Association, and being summoned to the Stone Family was a matter of prestige, but patience had its limits. One of the doctors finally spoke, his tone sharp and direct. “Lady Edna, it’s clear that you’ve twisted the truth for your own gain. While this is a private matter within your family and we have no right to intervene, we can’t allow our time to be wasted on petty accusations. We’re doctors—we should be saving lives, not dealing with baseless drama.” Another doctor chimed in with a cold scoff. “If you’re going to frame Mrs. Liza, at least make it convincing. The gaps in your story are so obvious it’s insulting. Do you take us for fools?” Seeing the situation spiraling out of control, the butler stepped forward and whispered urgently, “Madam, you need to resolve this quickly. You’ve clearly gone too far this time. Master Gavin has a temper, and if this drags on, the consequences won’t be light. You know what will happen if the matriarch intervenes. For your own sake, just apologize now—Young Master is still your son. If you act quickly, he might let this go.” Lady Edna’s face flushed red with anger. Apologize? To Liza? How could it come to this? Gavin was her son, and even if she had wrongly accused Liza, why should she be the one to bow her head? A mother could not possibly commit treason against her child! But deep down, Lady Edna also knew the butler was right. If she acted now, Gavin might let the matter slide, and Liza, as her daughter-in-law, would have no choice but to accept her apology. No matter what, her pride wouldn’t allow this situation to escalate further, especially not in front of the servants and outsiders. Clenching her teeth tightly, she finally forced the words out. “Miss Susanza , I admit I made a mistake.” Liza, who had remained calm through the entire ordeal, responded softly with a weak but sincere expression. She shook her head gently, as though reluctant to hold a grudge. “It’s alright, Lady Edna. I know you dislike me, but I’ve already forgiven you. Let’s just put this matter behind us.” The onlookers, who had been quietly observing the confrontation, broke into whispers, their admiration for Liza evident. “She’s not only beautiful but so gracious. What a kind heart…” Audrey, standing nearby, could barely contain her fury. She clenched her fists tightly, her face pale with disbelief. Kind-hearted? Was everyone blind? She had been poisoned—poisoned! And now she was the villain while Liza was being celebrated like a saint. How had things turned so completely upside down? Her thoughts were interrupted when Liza strolled toward her. Leaning in slightly, Liza’s voice lowered to a near whisper, though her words dripped with sarcasm. “What’s the matter, Miss Audrey? Are you having trouble accepting reality?” She continued without waiting for an answer, her eyes sharp yet composed. “I was locked in a pitch-black room because of you and your schemes. If Gavin hadn’t rushed back to save me, I would’ve been punished unfairly, and it would be me who ended up disfigured.” She paused, letting the weight of her words sink in before adding, “But look at what happened—you tried to harm me, and you got yourself disfigured instead. Isn’t that what they call karma?” Audrey trembled violently, every word like a slap to her pride. Her fury burned so intensely she wanted to scream, to tell everyone the truth. This isn’t right! she screamed in her mind. I didn’t poison myself! But she knew the truth didn’t matter anymore. No one would believe her. Not after all this. Audrey could only watch helplessly as Liza walked out of the room, a bright, victorious smile plastered on her face. She held Gavin’s hand effortlessly, as if the entire incident had been no more than a minor inconvenience. Once they were out of sight, Gavin turned to look at Liza with an unreadable expression. “The doctors mentioned that the poison entered their systems roughly four hours ago. Care to explain that?” His words were casual, but his sharp gaze betrayed his suspicion. Lady Edna, Madam Thelma, and Audrey had all been poisoned around the same time. Since Liza had been locked in a dark room during that period—on Lady Edna’s own orders—it would seem impossible for her to be involved. If Liza hadn’t been forcibly detained, Lady Edna would no doubt have pinned the blame on her, with or without evidence. But Gavin wasn’t easily fooled. He thought to himself, Regardless of whether I came back in time to help her or not, Liza already had a plan in motion. She knew she would be safe. By staying in that dark room, she had secured the perfect alibi. No one would ever suspect her, especially when she had no opportunity to poison anyone’s drinks—or so it seemed. Liza turned her head, widening her eyes to feign innocence. Her voice was sweet, almost pitiful. “Mr. Gavin , what are you saying? Are you implying that I poisoned them? You know I’m so delicate and harmless. I couldn’t possibly do something so cruel. Besides, I was locked in that dark room the entire time!” Gavin let out a low, mocking laugh, his smirk making Liza’s act falter slightly. “You didn’t need to be anywhere near them when they were poisoned. You did it before you were thrown into the dark room—when Lady Edna pulled you over to apologize to Audrey. That was your opportunity.” His tone was confident, as though he had pieced everything together perfectly. “At that moment, you could have easily sprinkled the poison powder onto Lady Edna. No one would’ve noticed it in all the chaos.” Liza’s expression froze for the briefest second. “…” How did he figure that out so quickly? she thought with disbelief. She had been so careful. Gavin didn’t stop there, his voice calm and sure. “After that, Madam Thelma’s insults gave you another opening. You knew they wouldn’t suspect you, so you made your next move then. And when you were alone with Audrey? That was the easiest part of all.” Liza’s lips twitched, and for a moment, she nearly broke character. This man sees too much. She quickly forced her composure back and gazed at him with watery, pleading eyes. “Mr. Gavin , you’re really mistaken! How could I poison anyone? Why don’t you trust me?” Gavin didn’t blink, his smirk deepening. “The poison you used wasn’t lethal—it’s weak and harmless when sprinkled on someone’s skin. It only activates when combined with something else.” Liza’s heart skipped a beat. How could he know this much? His voice remained steady as he continued, “Lady Edna’s throat wasn’t feeling well today, so she drank honeysuckle tea to soothe it. I’m guessing you were the reason her throat started hurting in the first place.” Liza froze. All traces of her fake innocence vanished, replaced by silent shock. She stared at him, stunned. Gavin looked at her knowingly, his calm gaze unshakable. “You underestimated me, didn’t you?” At that moment, Liza knew her little act was completely useless in front of Gavin. This man wasn’t fooled by anyone—not even her.
