I Married My Ex's Billionaire Uncle
The man’s power was staggering—he held countless priceless treasures that many countries could only dream of obtaining. Yet, despite that, no one had been able to harm him. It was proof that his wealth and influence were so immense they could rival entire nations. “What’s so fascinating on your phone, Mrs. Liza?” Gavin’s calm voice suddenly cut through the silence. Liza’s hand jerked, and she quickly shoved her phone aside, trying to appear nonchalant. “Gavin, I heard you locked Audrey up?” His expression remained indifferent, though a faint sneer tugged at his lips. Liza’s heart skipped a beat. She had the nagging feeling that she had been caught doing something suspicious. Trying to distract him, Liza glanced up nervously. Why do I feel like I’ve done something wrong? Gavin gave a slight nod and said coolly, “She had you locked in the dark room. I figured it was only fair for her to experience the same.” Liza’s heart fluttered briefly at his words, a faint warmth spreading in her chest. She hesitated before murmuring softly, “Thank you.” As soon as the words left her lips, she looked up—and froze. Gavin was staring at her intently, his deep, unreadable gaze holding hers. Startled, Liza frowned slightly. “Why are you looking at me like that? Is it strange for me to say thank you?” Gavin’s tone was calm, yet there was a chill beneath his words. “It was my oversight that allowed them to treat you that way. Don’t thank me. In the future, there’s no need for gratitude between us.” His words left Liza momentarily stunned. No need to thank each other? Was it because they were husband and wife, and thanking each other would seem too formal? Or was it because he still blamed himself for what happened? An odd feeling of frustration welled up inside her. Why does he protect me like this? Before she could sort through her thoughts, a loud, anguished scream broke the silence outside the room. “Ahhh!” The scream was unmistakably Audrey’s. Liza’s lips curled into a sly smile. She grabbed Gavin’s hand excitedly and tugged him toward the door. “Let’s go! The delicate little flower is being punished—I need to see this!” Gavin allowed himself to be pulled along without resistance, though his sharp gaze landed on her hand holding his. The butler, who witnessed the entire scene, nearly dropped his tray. Mr. Gavin had always been distant, never allowing anyone to get close to him. Now Liza was holding his hand, and yet… he wasn’t angry? In the dimly lit dark room, George stood in front of Audrey, holding a wooden board studded with small thorns. His face was calm and devoid of sympathy. “Miss Audrey,” he said politely, “I apologize in advance for what’s about to happen.” Before Audrey could react, George raised the board. Meanwhile, in the hallway, Lady Edna suddenly winced in pain and raised her hand to her cheek. Her smooth face felt swollen and tender. She turned sharply toward Madam Thelma—only to find her face covered in angry red bumps. “What is happening?!” Lady Edna’s voice quivered with disbelief. “Ahhh! My face hurts!” Audrey’s shrill scream echoed from the dark room. Lady Edna spun around and froze. Audrey’s once pristine, fair skin was now covered in unsightly, inflamed bumps. One had even burst, leaking a streak of yellowish fluid. It was a ghastly sight. Before Lady Edna could process the horror, another sharp pang shot through her own face. She gasped and clutched her cheek. The pain was unbearable. What on earth is happening to us? Audrey's face went pale as she looked at Lady Edna and Madam Thelma, her voice breaking into a terrified scream. George sighed, sounding almost apologetic. “Miss Audrey, you might want to calm down for now. How about we continue this tomorrow? Go back and collect yourself.” Tears streamed uncontrollably down Audrey's face. As they rolled into the raw wounds on her skin, a sharp sting shot through her, making her entire body tremble. “You’ve already ruined my face, and you still want to punish me further? This is torture!” Lady Edna, her patience running thin, ordered a servant to bring her a mirror. The moment she caught sight of her reflection, a horrified scream tore from her lips. Outside the dark room, Liza walked hand-in-hand with Gavin, her steps unhurried. The loud cries coming from inside drew a faint smirk from her lips. “Why does it sound like all three of them are screaming at once?”The scene inside was nothing short of chaotic. Audrey, Lady Edna, and Madam Thelma were all in distress, their wails echoing loudly: “Call the doctor! Somebody, help us!” Liza peered through the doorway and raised an eyebrow. Her lips curled into a cold smile. “They’re only getting what they deserve.” Gavin glanced at her and said casually, “There are surveillance cameras all over the Stone residence. It won’t take more than ten minutes to figure out who did this to them.” Liza, however, looked completely unfazed. Her tone was indifferent as she replied, “Oh.” Not long after, a group of doctors rushed in and began examining the three women. After conducting a thorough evaluation, the lead doctor finally delivered his diagnosis. “The three of you have been poisoned,” he explained, his tone professional and calm. “This is a rare toxin derived from a plant used by an African tribe. On its own, the plant isn’t particularly dangerous, but when its leaves and fruit are extracted and processed, it becomes a potent poison. The process to create it is intricate and costly. Additionally, the poison has an incubation period, so it’s difficult to determine exactly when you were exposed.” Gavin shifted his gaze toward Liza, his sharp eyes observing her reaction. “Aren’t you worried at all?” Liza widened her eyes in mock surprise, her tone dripping with innocence. “Why would I be worried? I didn’t poison anyone. I’m just a country bumpkin who’s never set foot in Africa. How would I even know about such a strange poison? And why would a weak and defenseless girl like me go to such lengths to harm someone?” Gavin stared at her for a moment, his expression unreadable. Finally, he let it go. Even if they somehow discovered that Liza was responsible, it wouldn’t matter. As long as he was here, no one would dare lay a finger on her. The doctors, meanwhile, continued their examination and eventually offered more specifics. The lead doctor spoke again, his tone grave. “Lady Edna, this toxin can be transmitted through the air. Based on our analysis, you likely came into contact with it approximately four hours ago.” “Four hours ago?” Lady Edna repeated, her face contorting with anger. Her sharp gaze turned to Liza, her voice rising with fury. “It was you, wasn’t it?! You actually dared to poison me! I’m your mother-in-law, and this is how you repay me? You’re truly wicked to want to disfigure me!” Tears streamed down Audrey’s face as she cried bitterly, while Madam Thelma sat to the side, trembling and whimpering. The atmosphere in the room was tense and chaotic, yet Liza remained calm, watching the spectacle unfold with an air of quiet amusement.
