I Married My Ex's Billionaire Uncle

Chapter 143

Liza glanced at Gavin with curiosity, unsure of the meaning behind his earlier words. Gavin’s expression remained calm as he clarified, “There was no such thing.” Confused, Liza tilted her head slightly. “What do you mean?” Gavin turned to her, his gaze steady and voice deliberate as he enunciated each word clearly. “I never promised to take care of Audrey.” Liza nodded lightly, her expression indifferent. Whether or not Gavin had made such a promise to Audrey was irrelevant to her, so long as their relationship didn’t cross her boundaries or irritate her. Noticing her casual demeanor, Gavin frowned slightly. “You don’t believe me?” he asked, his tone carrying a hint of displeasure. Liza blinked, caught off guard by his sudden fixation on her reaction. Nevertheless, she quickly shook her head to reassure him. It wasn’t a matter of disbelief. If Gavin had truly harbored feelings for Audrey, he wouldn’t have gone out of his way to dismiss her in such a blunt manner, especially not in front of his wife. His sharp words earlier were proof enough that he found Audrey’s behavior tiresome and irrelevant. Satisfied by her response, Gavin’s expression softened, but he still couldn’t shake the feeling that something was off. Despite her apparent trust in him, Liza’s nonchalant attitude left him unsettled. It was as if she didn’t care whether or not he and Audrey had any connection. Was that really how a wife should react? Before he could press the issue further, a gentle voice interrupted them. “Young Master, you’re back.” An elderly servant appeared at the corner, her wrinkled face lighting up with a warm smile. Her kind and amiable demeanor made Liza instantly feel at ease. “Old Lady Edna has been awake for a while now and has been waiting for you,” the servant informed him. Liza perked up slightly. So this was the grandmother Gavin had mentioned earlier?Gavin nodded politely. “I got held up in the living room, so I’m running a bit late,” he explained. The servant gave a knowing shake of her head, clearly familiar with the antics of the other members of the Stone Family. Without further comment, she gestured for them to follow her. As they walked, Gavin tightened his hold on Liza’s hand and leaned in slightly, his voice low and firm. “Mrs. Liza, you don’t need to concern yourself with those people in the living room,” he murmured. “But now, I need you to put on your best performance. Show me all the acting skills you’ve got.” Liza glanced at him and nodded in understanding. She knew exactly what he meant. The opinions of the people they had left behind didn’t matter in the slightest. However, it was important to ensure that Old Lady Stone—the one person who truly mattered—believed that their relationship was warm and loving. The two of them strolled through a small garden, the scent of blooming flowers mingling faintly with the heavy aroma of Chinese medicine carried by the breeze. Liza instinctively wrinkled her nose at the pungent smell, but Gavin walked on without a hint of reaction. Clearly, he was accustomed to it. “Old Madam is waiting for you in the greenhouse,” the elderly servant informed them before excusing herself. The greenhouse was bathed in warm sunlight, its golden glow streaming through the glass panes. In the center of the room, an elderly woman with snow-white hair reclined in a rocking chair, a soft blanket draped over her legs. Her face lit up with a gentle smile when she saw them enter, and she raised a frail hand to wave them over. Gavin’s cold, detached demeanor softened immediately. His sharp edges seemed to melt away as he approached her. Squatting by her side, he held her hand tenderly and said, “Grandma.” Liza blinked in surprise. She had never seen this side of Gavin before. The man she knew was distant, sarcastic, and quick to lash out when provoked. Yet here he was, a completely different person—gentle, vulnerable, and almost unrecognizable. It was as though the fierce predator had laid down its defenses, baring its softer side without hesitation. The elderly woman patted Gavin’s hand affectionately. “You’ve been working so hard, my dear boy,” she said, her voice raspy yet filled with warmth. Her clouded eyes shifted to Liza, and her smile grew wider. “This must be your wife. Such a lovely girl,” she said warmly. She beckoned Liza closer with a wave of her hand. After a brief moment of hesitation, Liza mimicked Gavin’s actions, crouching beside the old woman. “Grandma,” she said softly, her voice carrying a touch of shyness. “Good child,” Old Lady Stone said, taking Liza’s hand in her own. Her gaze sparkled with warmth as she added with a teasing tone, “It must be hard putting up with this blockhead.” Liza blinked in surprise. “…What?” she muttered under her breath, unsure how to respond. Old Lady Edna chuckled. “To tell you the truth, I never thought I’d live to see the day Gavin got married. I thought I’d leave this world without seeing him settle down. But here you are—you’ve made an old woman’s wish come true.” Liza remained silent, unsure how to respond to the heartfelt words. If anything, she thought the old woman was exaggerating. With Gavin’s looks, wealth, and status, women would line up for miles just to marry him. As though reading Liza’s thoughts, Old Lady Edna smiled knowingly. “When I first heard the news of your marriage, I asked someone to prepare a pair of jade sculptures as a gift. I planned to give them to you when we met, but I didn’t expect that day to come so soon. They’re still being carved…” Liza couldn’t help but smile at the heartfelt gesture, even as her inner thoughts wandered. So this is where Gavin inherited his knack for leaving people speechless, she mused. Reminding herself of her mission, Liza put on her most sincere smile and said gently, “Thank you, Grandma. A gift isn’t necessary—I’m already so happy just to meet you.”The old woman’s eyes twinkled with delight. “Such a sweet child! You’re too good for Gavin. If he ever dares to mistreat you, come to me. I’ll make sure to teach him a lesson.” Gavin let out a helpless sigh. “Grandma…” Liza chuckled at the exchange, feeling a warmth in her chest that she hadn’t expected. For a moment, she felt as though she truly belonged in this little scene of familial affection.
