The Replacement He Never Wanted
After Lance pulled out the chair for Virginia, he took his own seat. Sitting there, he exuded a cold, almost endless indifference. Just his presence gave off an overwhelming aura. It contrasted sharply with Virginia's current nervousness, making her seem small and out of place in comparison. Steven grew more and more irritated with Virginia with each passing moment. When the dinner ended, he was going to deal with Lance. That boy had already promised not to divorce Addison, yet today, he brought Virginia along. Wasn't this just an intentional attempt to stir trouble? Wasn't it clear that he was deliberately trying to mess with him? Steven turned to Addison and added some food to her plate. "Eat more; the chef is really skilled today. You'll definitely like it." Addison nodded and said, "Thank you, Steven." She picked up her fork and took a bite. Before she could even chew, Steven added more food to her plate. This continued for several rounds. Soon, everyone at the table was watching Addison. However, only Marilyn's gaze was one of understanding. Lance and Virginia's expressions were much more complex, with Virginia's face looking particularly grim. "I can serve myself," Addison said, feeling a little uncomfortable, waving her hand. Steven's treatment of her hadn't been either good or bad. When she first married into the family, Steven's attitude was cold and distant. But after she quietly stood by the family during tough times, his demeanor softened—though it remained only polite. In the three years since she'd married into the Johnstons, Steven had never treated her this warmly. Today, his smile was more than all the ones he'd given her combined. Addison knew exactly what Steven's actions meant. She could see why he kept offering her food—to make his feelings clear to everyone present. Evidently, he didn't like Virginia. Virginia, of course, understood this too. Her personality couldn't allow her to sit idly by.Suddenly, she tugged at Lance's sleeve, her voice barely audible. "Lance, I'm sorry. It's all my fault. I shouldn't have come. I really shouldn't have come." Lance frowned and said, "If we're here, we might as well make the best of it. "I asked you to come; you haven't done anything wrong. Just relax and stay here. No one can make you leave," Lance reassured, taking the blame upon himself. "But Mr. Steven doesn't like me." Virginia's voice grew louder, enough for everyone at the table to hear. Addison raised an eyebrow when she heard Virginia's words. After all their past disagreements, Addison knew instantly that Virginia was about to cause trouble again. Naturally, Steven took the bait. He sneered, "My family doesn't welcome you, so you should leave." "Grandpa, is it a must for you to do this? Can't we just finish this meal quietly?" Lance spoke up coldly, immediately defending Virginia. Addison raised her eyebrows again. Clearly, Virginia was the one who had started the conflict, but it had somehow shifted onto Steven as if he was the one who was problematic. In her mind, she couldn't help but wonder—had Virginia saved Lance's life? Otherwise, why would he defend her so fiercely? "Lance, don't argue with your grandfather for my sake," Virginia said seriously, turning to Steven. "Mr. Steven, why don't you like me?" "Why? There's no reason," Marilyn answered quickly. "Didn't Addison help your family a lot in the three years she's been with the Johnstons? I can do the same." Virginia's eyes held both defiance and frustration, showing a hint of resilience. "You can do that? What exactly can you do?" Marilyn scoffed. "With just your way with men?" Marilyn's tone was no longer polite. Virginia's anger flared, but she forced herself to calm down. Soon, she would get the authorization right in front of the Johnstons and show Marilyn just who was in charge. She suppressed her anger and forced a smile on her face. "Marilyn, what do you mean by that?" Virginia asked, her voice filled with feigned sadness. "I truly want to make up for everything I've missed over the years. "I know you hate me for leaving when your family was struggling, for abandoning you all. You probably think I'm with Lance for money and that I came back now only because your family is on the rise again. Everything is about money." Addison raised an eyebrow. At least Virginia seemed self-aware. But even after all her buildup, Virginia still hadn't gotten to the point. Addison set down her fork, twirling the stem of her wine glass, feeling a bit impatient. "But it was because my mother was ill that I had no choice but to leave Lance." Virginia cleared her throat. "And I'm not with Lance for money. "I don't want to hide anything from you. I'm from the Daves. I'm not lacking money." Addison was shocked. If Virginia was really from the Daves, that was a disgrace to the family. Steven's expression finally changed when he heard the Daves. "After my mother passed away, I came back. I lived in difficult circumstances abroad for three years." Virginia's tone became more pained. "But I don't want to talk about those painful memories now, so people don't think I'm just playing the victim." Her accusing gaze lingered on Addison. Addison blinked. So now she was being passive-aggressively mocked? She hadn't said a word, yet here Virginia was, trying to provoke her. Addison leaned in. "You said you didn't want to talk about it, afraid others would think you were complaining, but why are you saying all this? "Stop with the theatrics. Just say what you came here to say," Addison said, resting her chin on her hand, clearly ready for the show to continue. Virginia shot Addison a sharp look. "I'm going to prove myself today. "I'm going to help the Johnstons get the Levosulin authorization from Raven Company." Steven burst out laughing, his tone light and mocking. "You're going to help the Johnstons get the Levosulin authorization?" He couldn't help but find it ridiculous. Even Lance doubted this; he spoke up, "Virginia, this isn't something you can do. Don't push yourself." "I can do it," Virginia said firmly. "I'm calling Raven's CEO right now, and I'll have him send the authorization to the Johnstons.""You know Raven's CEO?" Steven's expression changed. "I'm from the Daves. Despite my mother's passing, the relationships she established remain intact. It's not surprising that I know Raven's CEO. "Not only that, but we have a very good relationship. I could get the authorization with few words," Virginia emphasized. Steven was stunned. "Really?" If Virginia really was close with Keith, and she could easily get the authorization, then she would be saving their family.
