The Replacement He Never Wanted
"What's wrong, Dr. Daves?" Addison quickly wiped the expression from her face and shook her head. "Nothing." The authorization hadn't arrived yet, and she couldn't shake the feeling that Lance might show up again. But how had he found out? Keith, though he appeared carefree, always had a good sense of what was going on. He didn't let his nonchalant attitude fool anyone; he understood things at a deeper level. Addison knew Keith well. He'd told her before that the information was sealed off, meaning no one should know that she was behind the Levosulin authorization or where she was. She had only signed it for Nancy, not for Lance ... Had Lance tracked the lab by following her alias? Addison frowned, trying to remember when she might have revealed her alias' details. "Dr. Daves, you gave Lance the authorization without asking for anything in return ... ?" Ryan, seeing the change in Addison's expression, carefully spoke up. He had wanted to ask the same question earlier but had kept quiet, respecting her boundaries. Something in him urged him to ask now. Considering Levosulin's value, asking for tens of millions in fees was completely reasonable. In fact, the authorization could have solved Johnston Enterprise's problems. Even if she'd raised the price, they wouldn't have had a choice but to agree. The fact that she had given the authorization without even mentioning money didn't sit right. There seemed to be more to her relationship with Lance than he had realized. Maybe it was ... closer than he had thought? What was their connection? As soon as the question left his lips, Ryan regretted it, waiting anxiously for Addison's answer. Addison snapped back to reality, realizing Ryan had just pointed out something she hadn't considered. She had never asked for any fees from Johnston Enterprise. She had been so focused on helping them through the crisis so Harvey could rest— Her thoughts trailed off, and she only murmured a quiet, "Yeah."Compared to Harvey, money didn't matter. It was strange how people could develop habits over time. Ever since Harvey's death, she had thrown herself into helping Johnston Enterprise without expecting anything in return. It had become second nature. Ryan heard her response and pressed his lips together. The single word made a weight settle in his chest. "Shall we start the experiment?" Addison asked, her voice calm, noticing that Ryan seemed distracted. "Yeah, sure," Ryan nodded, trying to shake off the strange feelings that lingered. He looked at the results Addison had just completed, then quickly changed the subject. "It looks like it worked, but the effect isn't great." Addison nodded. "Abysmal." However, adding a small King Dragon Plant might help. Ryan looked down, as if something clicked. "Dr. Daves, what if we added some King Dragon Plant?" Addison was caught off guard. She knew Ryan had talent, but this suggestion surprised her. He was more inventive than she'd expected. "That could work. King Dragon Plant should improve the results," Addison said, offering him a look of approval and a small smile. Ryan's heart skipped a beat at the sight of her smile. For a moment, he found himself distracted. Without saying anything, he quickly turned and went to fetch the plant, as if trying to shake off the strange feeling. ... Ryan returned with the plant, handing it to Addison. She paused, thinking for a moment. Then, she passed the experiment over to him. "You take charge. I'll assist if needed." Ryan's body tensed as he accepted the bottle. "Okay." Two hours passed. The experiment was finished. Ryan let out a soft sigh of relief, the tension in his shoulders finally easing."Dr. Daves, what do you think?" Ryan asked eagerly, his eyes sparkling with hope. Addison had been observing him closely. He had worked with precision and brought fresh ideas. He had done a great job. Just as she was about to speak, Ryan's phone rang. "Sorry, I need to take this," Ryan said, glancing at the caller ID. His face grew serious, and the excitement from earlier was gone. Addison nodded, giving him space. Ryan stepped outside to answer the call, regaining his composure. Having seen the results, Addison felt confident no more adjustments were necessary. She put the data aside and picked up another set of materials. A message from Ryan appeared on her phone. "Dr. Daves, I need to handle something urgent." "Leave the equipment. I'll organize everything when I return." Addison looked at the message. What could be so important? She typed a simple reply, "Okay." If it hadn't been urgent, Ryan wouldn't have left the experiment unfinished. Addison was understanding of his situation. Addison refocused on the experiment, scanning the table for the ingredients she needed. Perhaps some traditional herbs would be helpful? She rose and walked over to the storage box. It wasn't there. Had Ryan moved them to the herb room? Addison opened the door to the lab and went to find them. Elsewhere in the building, Lance walked down the hallway, his expression hardened. He had to find Dr. Nancy today. If he didn't, Raymond wouldn't let up. Ever since Raymond left, he had made multiple attempts to get Michael to remove Lance from his position, using the authorization issue as his excuse. It was clear that if Raymond couldn't have the job, he wouldn't allow Lance to keep it. Raymond had also claimed to know Dr. Nancy's whereabouts. Lance needed to make good on that information. And Johnston Enterprise couldn't afford to wait much longer. Lance continued down the hallway, scanning the rooms as he passed. Just like last time, he checked the labs. No sign of her. His face darkened. Lance pulled out his phone. "Is it true Dr. Nancy comes to the lab on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays?" Mike, sitting on a leather couch, sprang up at the question. "Definitely." Lance ended the call without a word. Had his search for Dr. Nancy been leaked? His expression hardened. Wait a minute ... Lance's eyes narrowed. He looked ahead sharply. A familiar figure appeared down the hall. The person wore a lab coat, their long hair flowing down their back. From behind, there was an elegant presence. It was her—Dr. Nancy. Lance's heart raced as he quickened his pace. But she was already too far ahead. She disappeared around a corner. Lance followed, his gaze scanning the rooms. He locked onto a lab at the end of the hall. The woman was inside, working on an experiment. Her posture was graceful, the sunlight from the window casting a soft glow over her. It was Dr. Nancy, just like in the photo. Lance's tension eased. He knocked on the lab door. Inside, Addison was focused on preparing the herbs. She heard the knock but didn't look up. "Come in," she said, her tone calm.Lance stepped inside. "Are you Dr. Nancy?" The voice hit Addison like a wave. Something was off. That voice ... why did it sound so familiar?
