The Replacement He Never Wanted

Chapter 557 Eavesdropper for Hire

She was extremely sensitive when it came to Addison's name. The mere mention of Addison made her tense up. "Was it Addison?" Marilyn hesitantly voiced the name. "Addison, Addison," Clayton repeated it a few times, then suddenly slapped his thigh. "Yes! That's the name!" Marilyn's eyebrows shot up. "Lance really called out Addison's name?" "Yes, he did." Although Clayton didn't know why Marilyn was suddenly so happy, the thought that his words brought her joy made him genuinely happy as well. With the confirmation, Marilyn was overjoyed. Lance had called out Addison's name while drunk—what did that mean? It meant there was something between them!Something big! And putting that together with what this man had just told her, Lance had torn up the divorce agreement Virginia had given him. What did that mean? It meant Lance did not want to get a divorce. Marilyn's lips curled into an irrepressible smile. Her mood soared. She glanced around the room and then waved over a nearby servant. "Bring me that bronze-colored box from the shelf over there." The servant lowered her head, retrieved the box, and handed it to Marilyn. Marilyn opened it and selected a piece of gold. The gleaming metal shimmered in the light, almost blindingly bright. Clayton felt like his eyes had just been dazzled. "For you." Clayton pointed at himself in disbelief. "Mrs. Marilyn, for me?" "Yes, for you." She was in such a great mood that she instinctively wanted to share her joy with someone. She looked around and saw nothing else suitable, so she grabbed a piece of gold. "It might be a bit tacky, but take it." "Tacky? No, no, not at all!" Clayton was ecstatic. He immediately snatched up the gold without the slightest pretense of humility as if afraid she'd change her mind. "I have one more favor to ask of you." "Anything, Mrs. Marilyn! Just say the word." Clayton weighed the gold in his hands, feeling waves of excitement. "If you ever happen to see Lance with that woman at the restaurant," she said meaningfully, "keep an eye on them for me. Especially what they talk about." "Understood! No problem at all! You can count on me." "If you hear anything important, come straight to the Johnston Residence. Tell the guards at the gate that I sent for you." Clayton scratched his head. "Got it." With a bar of gold and a piece of white sapphire in hand, forget the guards. He'd be willing to go through fire and water for her."What's your name?" Marilyn suddenly asked. "Clayton," he replied enthusiastically. Marilyn nodded. "Oh, right. Leave me your phone number." A servant immediately stepped forward with a piece of paper and a pen at her words. Maybe it was because of her good mood, but Marilyn found this man increasingly pleasing to the eye. At first glance, he seemed weak-willed. But after interacting with him more, she realized he was actually quite sharp, quick-witted, and perceptive. The more timid someone appeared, the less guarded others would be around them.
