The Replacement He Never Wanted
"There's something suspicious about Harvey's accident ... "But ... " "But what?" Addison asked at once. Her eyes brimmed with worry, as though she was grasping for something crucial. "But Mom doesn't know anything about it." Addison's brows twitched. "So, you noticed something off about the car accident? "Lance, are you looking into this?" At her words, the man lifted his gaze, his unreadable eyes meeting hers. Addison held her breath, locking eyes with him, waiting for an answer. Worried he hadn't caught her words, she repeated in a gentler tone, "Did you find anything strange about the car accident? "Are you investigating it?"Lance remained silent. Anxious, Addison glanced up at him. His slightly intoxicated eyes carried a faint redness, his gaze distant. His tall figure loomed, cutting off half the light, his shadow stretching long across the floor. "Lance?" The more nervous she became, the drowsier he looked, as if he would drift off at any moment. "Lance, stay awake." He could sleep after answering, but this was too important to ignore. She had to know. It mattered to her, to Harvey, to both of them. "I'm still awake," he murmured, his voice sluggish. He claimed he wasn't asleep, but to Addison, his eyes were already halfway shut, on the verge of closing completely. Her heart tightened. She didn't hesitate. Pulling out a chair, she quickly sat beside him. Without thinking, she reached for his arm. Her breath brushed his ear, and the soft scent of her lingered in the air. Lance couldn't help but shiver. "Lance, focus. Just answer me before you sleep, please. "Or do I need to get you hangover tea to sober up right now?" She felt an overwhelming urge to run out and get the hangover tea to sober him up. She wasn't concerned whether Lance would have suspicions once he sobered up or if he'd figured out her connection to Harvey. The only thing on her mind was finding out what really happened when Harvey had his accident. What doubts surrounded the incident? Was there still a chance he was alive? Hearing the urgency in her voice, Lance sluggishly pushed himself up, though his gaze was unfocused, his body swayed, and the strong scent of alcohol clung to him. "Something off ... " Addison immediately straightened, leaning in, eager to catch his next words."The day Harvey had the accident ... " "Yes? What happened?" Addison responded. But before he could continue, he slumped back onto the table, his eyes shut tight. No matter how many times she called his name, he didn't stir. He had completely blacked out from the alcohol. Releasing his hand, she sat beside him, disappointment washing over her. She watched him sleep, then let out a quiet sigh. This guy was totally unreliable. After all this time questioning, she had only scratched the surface, without uncovering a single crucial piece of information.
