The Replacement He Never Wanted
Addison watched as Lance walked away, his figure gradually fading into the distance. A sense of confusion crept over her. Why won't he sign the divorce papers now? They are in his hands, yet he's still holding back. Before she could enter the ballroom, Lance suddenly stopped and turned, blocking her path. Addison instinctively met his cold, distant gaze. The moonlight couldn't seem to reach the darkness in his eyes. Is he regretting the decision? Oddly, she felt a sense of relief wash over her. Lance adjusted the collar of his perfectly pressed shirt, his face showing no emotion as he spoke. "Don't bring up the divorce to Grandpa. I've already talked it through with him." "Talked it through?" Addison asked, her brows furrowing slightly. He nodded briefly, uninterested in her reaction. He wanted to keep her interactions with the Johnstons to a minimum so that she wouldn't expect much. "Yes. It's all sorted." "Alright." With that, Addison felt no need to be cautious with Steven. Since Lance has already spoken with Grandpa, I don't need to hesitate when I talk to him. This is a good thing. "Then please make sure to sign the divorce papers once the party ends," she reminded him softly. Since Virginia's return, Addison had made up her mind to stop living in a dream. It was a decision that had been clear from the start, and now, it had become overdue. A flicker of impatience crossed Lance's face. She's acting as though she's torn between wanting to avoid the divorce and needing to act like she's eager to end it. She has definitely learned how to play hard to get. He hummed silently in reply. Together, they entered the grand ballroom. Lance, with his status and charisma, quickly became the center of attention. As soon as they walked in, he was surrounded by admirers. The well-dressed crowd surrounded him, fawning and flattering as he moved gracefully through them, holding a glass of wine with ease. The extravagant hall, adorned with gold and ornate decorations, was a spectacle of wealth, but Addison couldn't help feeling indifferent. She felt like an afterthought compared to how Lance stood at the center of the crowd. She could hear the compliments coming from the staircase—comments about them being the perfect couple—but she knew better. It was just polite chatter directed at Steven. In Halton, everyone knew she was just filling in. Countless women dreamed of being Mrs. Johnston, waiting for her to be cast aside by Lance. But Addison didn't care. It was just how things went. She looked around at the joyful crowd in the luxurious hall, but her interest was minimal. Steven, still recovering from his illness, looked weak and tired. After greeting a few acquaintances, he headed upstairs. Marilyn, however, stayed with the other wealthy women, laughing and chatting. Addison had no interest in joining their conversations, so she took a seat for herself. While Lance was engaged in a deep conversation, Isaac suddenly rushed through the crowd, panting as he reached Lance. Lance didn't change his expression, only turning his head slightly. "What's the matter?" Isaac took a moment to catch his breath before speaking. "Mr. Johnston, Mike is looking for you. He says it's urgent." Lance's eyes darkened, his face unreadable as he nodded toward the people nearby. "Excuse me. "Where is he?" Lance asked, stepping out of the crowd. His pace was quick, and Isaac had to jog to keep up. "Mike didn't ... say where," Isaac stammered, realizing too late that he hadn't asked for the details. Lance shot him a cold glance before dialing Mike's number, his focus ahead. Addison, still seated, caught only a brief glimpse of Lance's hurried departure. Where is he going? He hasn't signed the papers yet! Why leave so suddenly? She stood up, intending to follow him, but by the time she reached the entrance of the Johnston Residence, his car was already several meters away. Isaac was driving, and as he glanced into the rearview mirror, he saw Addison standing at the door. He slowed the car, his voice cautious. "Mr. Johnston, Ms. Daves is still standing at the door. She might be waiting for something." Lance didn't look back, his expression cold as he frowned. "Drive." He was clearly annoyed.Isaac pursed his lips and, after a final glance at Addison, stepped on the accelerator. It was clear that Lance didn't want to deal with Addison, and Isaac knew better than to interfere. It seems I need to work harder to stay in Virginia's good books from now on. Addison frowned as she watched Lance's car fade into the distance. What could be so urgent that he left without a word? She couldn't figure out what was going on in his mind. In the end, the divorce papers were in his hands, and whatever he chose to do with them was up to him. Not planning to go back into the ballroom, Addison decided to head straight home. She absentmindedly opened her phone to message Marilyn, but halfway through typing, she paused and deleted the text. Once she handed over the divorce papers, she considered the marriage over. There was no need for further contact with Marilyn ... Addison put the phone back in her bag, her face neutral as she climbed into the car and drove away from the Johnston Residence. Meanwhile, inside the villa, Lance sat on the sofa with a cup of water in his hand. "Any updates on Nancy?" he asked abruptly, his tone serious. Mike, smiling proudly, replied, "Of course. In Halton, there's nothing I can't find out." Lance narrowed his eyes, leaning back into the sofa, one leg casually crossed over the other as his elbow rested on the armrest. "Go on." "I've confirmed what was posted on that forum. I even tracked down the person who made the post. Turns out, Nancy is indeed the researcher from Raven." Lance nodded, signaling for him to continue. "I've also learned something interesting in the past few days. Not only is Dr. Nancy behind the development of that medication, but she's also the second-largest shareholder at Raven Company!" Mike took a sip of his tea, clearly pleased with the discovery. "When I found out, I was shocked. I never expected her to be such a major player at Raven! That means if you want to secure the rights to Levosulin, you don't need to deal with Keith. You can go straight to Dr. Nancy. She's the one who can sign off on it, and her word matters more than Keith's." Lance's expression remained stoic, but a flicker of surprise crossed his face at the news."Do we know where Dr. Nancy is?" Lance asked suddenly, realizing that they needed this information to move forward. Even if they knew Nancy was involved with the drug, it would be useless if they didn't know where she was or how to reach her. Mike chuckled. "Of course, I know. As a lawyer, I think ahead." He turned to grab a stack of photos from the room. "Here. These are pictures of the lab Keith built in a secret location. It took some effort, but I found it. "Dr. Nancy works there." Lance took the photos, noticing the back of a woman that exactly matched the one in the post. He gave Mike an approving look. This information was a game changer. With this, the issues facing Johnston Enterprise could be resolved quickly. The pressure Lance had been feeling seemed to ease, as the path forward was now clear. They just needed to find Dr. Nancy.
